  • In the mountainous coastal communities of Oaxaca, olotillo corn is planted by hand on the hillside using espeques (long stakes). Planting is coordinated around the rains, and typically happens around the summer solstice. This traditional, manual method of farming is dying out, as the average age of the farmers in these communities increases.
Exilino Salinas Escamilla began planting corn at age 12 in his hometown of Nopala. He is one of the few young people who still makes a living this way today.

Thank you for this beautiful video. I plant corn by hand myself and I know how much work it is. That's why I have great respect for all the people who still grow corn this way. Greetings from europe to mexico, the homeland of corn.

Oaxaca is truly one of Mexico's most vibrant and culturally rich regions. You'll love the colorful markets, the delicious food (try the mole and tlayudas!), and the beautiful colonial architecture. If you decide to go, please don't hesitate to check out our Oaxaca guide: masienda.com/blogs/learn/where-to-eat-oaxaca ❤
