- This mighty C-5M Super Galaxy departs from RAF Mildenhall and just look at the 28 wheels and the four large F-138-GE100 General Electric engines smashing out 51,000lbs of thrust!
The C-5M Super Galaxy is a strategic transport aircraft and is the largest aircraft in the Air Force inventory. Its primary mission is to transport cargo and personnel for the Department of Defense. The C-5M is a modernized version of the legacy C-5 designed and manufactured by Lockheed Martin. Currently the U.S. Air Force owns and operates 52 C-5B/C/M. They are stationed at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware; Travis AFB, California; Lackland AFB, Texas; and Westover Air Reserve Base, Massachusetts.
The 436th Airlift Wing is the senior military organization at Dover Air Force Base, Del. The "Eagle Wing" is a subordinate unit of Headquarters 18th Air Force located at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.
The 436th Airlift Wing serves as host to several tenant organizations that provide support from field training to manpower assessment. The largest tenant organization on base is the 512th Airlift Wing, the "Liberty Wing," Air Force Reserve (Associate). The 512th is assigned to Headquarters 22nd Air Force at Dobbins Air Force Base, Ga. The 512th Airlift Wing has an infrastructure similar to the Eagle Wing as it shares the global mobility mission with the 436th AW.
The C-5M Super Galaxy is equipped with five sets of landing gear, 28 wheels, four General Electric CF6-80C2-L1F (F-138) commercial engines, and a state-of-the-art maintenance diagnostics system. It can carry oversized cargo over intercontinental ranges and can take off and land on relatively short runways. Both the nose and aft doors open, allowing ground crews to simultaneously load and off-load cargo from both ends, reducing cargo transfer times. The full-width drive-on ramps at each end enable double rows of vehicles to be transported.The maintenance diagnostics system has the ability to record and analyze data from more than 7,000 test points, reducing maintenance and repair time.The C-5M, with a cargo load of 281,001 pounds (127,460 kilograms), can fly 2,150 nautical miles, offload, and fly to a second base 500 nautical miles away from the original destination - all without aerial refueling. With aerial refueling, the aircraft's range is limited only by crew endurance.
The C-5 Avionics Modernization Program included upgrading the avionics to improve communications, as well as upgrading the navigation, surveillance and air traffic management systems to maintain compliance with national and international airspace requirements. It also added new safety equipment and installed a new autopilot system.

The mighty C-5M, an absolutely incredible aircraft! Glides along the runway & then just so gracefully "takes off" once the pilot pitches the nose up. Amazing. What a "heavy"❤

I had three MAC flights on these when I was in the Navy. If you look just in front of the vertical stabilizer you can see a slight bump. The passenger area is elevated from the main deck, and thats where you sit.
First flight I had in one was from Hawaii to California, and the only thing in it beside the passengers was one pallet with our luggage, lol. The inside is cavernous, and that pallet looked so lonely, lol.
There is something futuristic about this aircraft once its airborne. Can't explain other than, the smooth lines of the fuselage. Way Ahead of its time I guess when it first flew in USAF 🇺🇸. The numbers accompanying the video are astounding. The info listed is amazing. Just an Epic noise, epic size and she soars beautifully. Glad we get to see them relatively frequently. Ace that Ted!!
