All I know is that a co-worker of mine who doesn't listen to Rome on a regular basis listened to the Smackoff with me in the car, and he agrees that Chael was the best, while all the former champs kinda sucked. Maybe they're better if you get all the inside references, but Chael won it because he brought something different.
My initial thought was "Iafrate got jobbed!!!". Listening to Chael's call again . . . . . Chael WAS the best call. Take, take, take, take. He "kept it tight". And (this is a novel idea) TALKED SPORTS! Good result.

Yep. When was the last time any caller to this show had a legitimate sports take, it seems so long ago. Mike in Indy who came second is the only legit caller to this show who actually talks about SPORTS. I'm glad Rome cut out that clone on clone crime...it's a big part of why I didn't listen for a while last year. The whole thing with Broadway and Jay Mohr got so personal it dragged the show down.
This wasn't quite as good as I was expecting... Doc Mike and Iafrate really had the best calls this year. Brad's call was okay but nothing like how he slayed last year.

And that script definitely shouldn't have won the Smack Off.
Did Rome jump the shark here? Been listening since the early eighties and city versus city and clone on clone smack has been an integral part of the show but...I know the show is nationwide.and growing but what now ?The all celebrity smackoff?Smacking with the stars?

Looks like he won primarily on the strength of the fact that he had lots of funny sports takes. Not my favorite call of the day (Mike in Indy), and he certainly doesn't need the great grand prize, but a nice change of pace.

This shouldn't have even been in the top 10. Football, I wish I could wear 50 lbs of armor.... This call was at the level of a Hackoff call, not a winner in the smackoff when there were a ton of good calls. Saying that football players wear pads and baseball is a slow sport are literally hack lines; they are what a hack comedian would say. This call was horrible, what a dumb result.
