It is remarkable that such a young man remains enthusiastic about these old ships. I became excited about ocean liners in the 1950s. In the 1970s and 1980s while residing in Arizona I traveled several time to tour and stay on Queen Mary at Long Beach CA. Thank You for your great documentaries.
In the 1950s I collected small rubber/plastic models of the current liners, free with corn flakes packets. United States/The Queens/Nieuw Amsterdam etc.
@@johnjephcote7636 In the 1950s 60s and to a lesser extent the 1970s plastic kit models were popular and available even in neighborhood drug stores. I had some really beautiful models and generally blew them all up with fireworks. I was a disturbed kid though really I think the U.S. was and is disturbed. In 1996 I found a model kit for the Queen Elizabeth II, boy was I excited. In 1997 I managed to sail the QE2 from South Hampton to New York. The model was much less important after being on the ship.

I have to tell you a quick Story: My Mom and I, (she is gone to Heaven, now), but we used to go to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, at least every month or so. I have explored every inch, even behind the chains, with staff allowances!
My mommy and I, each time we visited, would ALWAYS pretend, I mean we would dress up like the 1930s-1940s fashion, we would totally get into pretending we were going on a real voyage on her! We had so much fun!! We would stroll the deck, dance in the ballrooms, have lunch, dinner, stroll the deck some more, pretend we were going to a new place each time.
It was amazing, and I miss this, and my mommy, terribly.

I’m a Bankie (from Clydebank). Some of my family worked at John Browns during this time…sadly the yard is long gone and currently being regenerated with housing, a college, heath centre and leisure centre thus far….can’t wait to see part 2!!
I stayed on the Queen Mary a couple of times in Long Beach.Can't explain it,but I left with a profound fondness for her.I pray she will be saved.🙏
She's been saved!! Millions have been spent. She reopens to the public this spring. Fortunately, I only live about 60 miles away, will definitely be going to visit when she's open!

Congratulations on a most informative & very well narrated video. Excellent photographs of the 534's (RMS QM's) construction - which I haven't seen - and I have seen a lot!
My paternal Grandfather worked as a riveter at John Brown's shipyard during the 534's construction - but where is Part 2?
This was a very well presented video, and I especially enjoy the extra details included about the struggles of the working families at the shipyard, which are only implied but never recounted in other films I’ve seen on the ship.
I took the tour of The Queen Mary when I was in Los Angeles about 15 years ago, and she is still magnificent. But it’s an ongoing battle to keep her in good condition, as you could see either rust creeping in on the areas of the superstructure and as you walk along the boat deck. Now the newspapers are reporting that she’s in financial trouble my first instinct is I want to get on a plane to LA just to go take another tour, however impractical.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video! So well researched and a subject matter that hasn't been beat to death by the clickbait channels with a bunch of myths. I was unaware of the insurance issue. I knew of the funding problems but, again, you've taught me something I was completely unaware of. Its hard to imagine a world without the Queen Mary. I can't wait for part two! ☺👍👌
What's even harder to imagine is a world where she sunk. There's the obvious scenarios on whether the rogue wave did her in had she rolled 3 degrees more, and whether she'd be unlucky enough to be sunk by a U-Boat. But while I was reading some what-if scenarios on if Titanic never sank, I stumbled across an alternate history article where it describes the Mary sinking on her maiden voyage while about to break the speed record, after colliding with a Navy ship undergoing top secret trials. Couldn't begin to imagine that then and I still can't now.
You must speak of the Normandie it is one of the most beautiful liner that never sailed.

The Normandie was operational for about four years before its service was ended by WWII.

A tad bit of personal history: My Great Uncle was one of the many soldiers that sailed on her to Europe from the USA in WWII. Some 40 years later I accompanied him in 1982 onboard her, and it was my first time exploring the ship. He was really amazed at it (again) and recalled many stories, and I wished I remembered all he told me. Also, my High School prom in 1984 was onboard her as well. I remember that one well, a near summer full moon cast shadows on her Sun Deck overlooking the Long Beach Harbor. Good Times!
Not sure why I think old ships are cool. But now I do, and I enjoyed this vid. Well done, Sir, well done!
Great work Mike. My mother was born in Clydebank a year before Queen Mary was launched. But remembers her father, who worked on the design team of the ship, talking about the ship. Mum can remember the Queen Elizabeth being launched. Looking forward to the second episode.

In 2014 I think it was, I took a vacation to LA and my hotel was the queen Mary. It was different, but the first thing I noticed when we’re pulling up was the sheer size of the cruise ships right behind it. I was on the small bus with other people, everybody assumed that we were all going to the cruise ship I was the only one going to Queen Mary I’m not sure that they knew what I was doing. Once a board, I checked into this awesome room it wasn’t very big but the decoration and the layout was just amazing. I then spend a week going into every nook and cranny of that place. Even some places that you want allowed to go to. I love it, I loved every minute of it. If it ever reopens, because it’s close right now obviously I would love to go back.
the old ships had style, the new cruise liners less so.

Very nice video. I do, however, recognize the particular book you use for your reference for it. (One of my favorites!) "The Queens of the North Atlantic"! You have quoted many a detail from that book I believe.

The Queen Mary was my favorite Ocean Liner since the 1950’s boy what a beautiful ship. I use to make drawings of Titanic and mainly Queen Mary.
I got to stay on the Queen Mary two nights and no ghost didn’t stop by my cabin to pay me a visit, lol!
Today’s ships hull like big barge with freight boxes stacked up 100ft above water line with carnival rides Royal Caribbean they may have the largest ship but the 135,000 ton QM2 can out run and they can’t sail across the N Atlantic storms there hulls 45 percent less metal. Queen Mary 2 can plow right through N Atlantic storm swells 30 to 80 ft.
Queen Mary 1 she proved this several times. One time she was carrying around 16000 men to war when a 90 ft rogue wave hit her starboard side it rolled her but she plowed through that wave and had minor damage no cruise ship today can survive it, or take on such big storm swells they are are not made to handle such storms.
Thanks to the airline co. they taken all but one Ocean Liner out.

Remarkable ship - glad it's survived to this day in CA - USA, amazing how this liner (along with QE1) survived during WW2 as troop ship - and QM1 survived the Rogue Wave (pitching about 52 degrees) - 8-14 December 1942,

Naming! "Queen Victoria" was intended (in part as an ~ia ending common to Cunard.) The King was approached about naming for "England's greatest Queen" - and said something like, "My wife would be delighted!"

I wish we'd had the foresight to do the same with Olympic. The discovery of the Titanic wreck site along with the release of James Cameron's movie years later (both piquing public interest) would have made her an excellent tourist attraction and the revenue brought in from 1998 to present day, alone, by a docked sister of the Titanic would be absolutely astounding.

When, and if your budget ever permits you should get fitted with some vintage wire frame spectacles along with acquiring an example of one of those classic antique microphones from back in the 1930’s. So far you’ve got the entire, vibe and visual feel going fine, bud. I live just around three and a half miles straight north of the Mary here in Long Beach. She’s always been my absolute favorite ocean liner of all time on every level. My parents and I came, and saw her the day after she’d arrived back in ‘67. All vestiges of the hullabaloo from the day before were no where any longer in evidence - she was just sitting there all by her lonesome. We knew what had been planned to be done to her. I said to my Dad “Look at her! Right now this very moment she’s still completely seaworthy. They could bring her crew back on board, fire up those boilers again, and away she’d go again. Just think, we’ll never see her ever again like we’re seeing her right this minute!”
You do know the boilers were removed, with most of the engines after she arrived and Cunard made a STIPULATION in the sale of the QUEEN MARY, that it WOULD NEVER SAIL AGAIN. pulling out the boilers and engines was proof to Cunard that the STIPULATION was honored by the city.

I merely stated to my parents that technically the ship was still fully seaworthy meaning it could technically be re- fired and be under way again. On May 27th 1936 the Queen Mary departed from Southampton England embarking on her Voyage she was a beautiful ship with five dining areas and lounges two cocktail bars and the swimming pools a grand ballroom and even a small Hospital the Queen Mary had set a new standard which the Rich and Famous considered as the only civil way to travel she represented she represented the spirit of an error known for its Elegance class and style for 3 years after her maiden voyage the Queen Mary was the grandest ocean liner in the world carrying mini Hollywood celebrities and royalty but when the Queen Mary docked in New York September of 1939 that would be the last time she would carry civilian passengers for many years as World War II started the Queen Mary transformed into a troop ship they painted the Queen Mary a camouflage gray color and stripped her of her luxurious amenities the Queen Mary was the nickname the gray ghost because of her stealth in Stark color the Queen Mary was the largest and fastest troop ship to sail capable of transporting as many as 16,000 troops this meant that the Queen Mary also served as a hospital boat and many people died due to injury infections diseases in some people say that the Queen Mary is one of the most haunted places in the world as many as 150 million Spirits is lurking upon his ship just over the past 60 years the Queen Mary has been the site of at least 49 reported deaths not to mention having gone through the terrorists of World War located about 50 ft below the water level is the Queen Mary's engine room and this is said to Behold a of Paranormal Activity especially near the infamous store number 13 which crushed at least two men to death at different points during the ships history the known and recent death was during a routine watertight door drill in 1966 or 13 crushed a young crew member named John Peter some people say that if you go to number door 13 and ask John Peter to knock once for yes and twice for no he will respond with the clear knocking noise another popular area as Spirits have been seen in is the first and second class swimming pools neither of the pools are used today which may be why many spirits are seen lurking around the area of a woman seemed often appearing in a 1930s style swimming suit or other people also have reported the sounds of splashing and wet Footprints leading from the deck to the changing rooms in the second class pool rooms the spirits of a little girl named Jackie is often seen in heard there are rumors that Jackie had drowned in this pool however there's no no drownings that never occurred on the ship no known reports of a girl named Jackie dying on the ship is unclear where she came from many people believe that she might be a demonic entity posing as a little girl
People have also had experience with Jackie on the ship someone said that they were staying on the ship one night and saw a small Shadow Dart across their room after the shadow disappeared something fell off the shelf where they were also having a tour near the boat deck that Jackie is said to be seen they said that they heard a loud scream and the employee ran down the hallway to see if anybody was sneaky around there but they found no one the Queen Salon which one served as the ships first class Lounge a beautiful young woman in an elegant white evening gown has often been seen dancing in the shadows of a corner in a room in the ships propellers there are said to be haunted by many men who died in an accidental drowning this happened in the late 1942 when the HMS karakawa was accidentally sliced in half in sunk by the Queen Mary during escort Duty dozens of men were caught into the ships propellers the other men died on impact or dragged a total of 337 men were killed Leslie room b340 is one of the most haunted rooms on the ships is unclear what has happened in this room so to make it so hot to make it so haunted however they had to close the room down to visitors due to the amount of Paranormal Activity they didn't even made this room into a paranormal Hospital on the ship there's still no number on the room to this day if you rent out the room there are ghosts experience written on the walls from visitors there this is also and a Ouija board that comes with the room tarot cards and other things that can be used to communicate with the spirits these aren't even half of the ghost stories that have been reported on the Queen Mary

The dockyards is now a redevloped area with apartments and a local college. however this dock remains and one of the cranes in the yard. anda few remains of the slips out into the clyde that Mauretania and many others were launched on.

It is seriously a difficult and expensive task to build a ship such as the Queen Mary, is it not?
It's so strange that I've been sailing past and offered s cannon salute to the Queen Mary - without knowing her full history, although I know a good deal more British history than most Americans (or most Little Englanders) - from the deck of the Lady Washington, a lovely replica of an 18th century brig most of you will have seen disguised with some extra CGI cannons as the Interceptor "Such a pretty ehip" that Will and Jack steal at the beginning of Pirates of the Caribbean.
The Lady Washington used to come down from the state of Washington to winter in San Diego by the Star of India or in Long Beach, but these last several years she's stayed home. I suppose I really ought to go aboard Lady Mary and pay my respects
The wrangling over poor Queen Mary's desperately-needed renovations seems to have rumbled along in my peripheral hearing ever since I moved to southern California in 96.I think it was feared she'd sink before funds were found to restore her; her hull is apparently in dire shape.It's the same story everywhere - a similar fate almost befell the Constellation that's the star historical ship of Baltimore harbor.
It seems like the only people who ever have enough money to repair and restore Queen Mary don't have enough respect for history and want to turn her into a themed resort, casino, or something equally tacky, while history lovers who want to preserve and restore her as she should be are always short of funds. But many of the latter serve as tour guides on board her, even if she is showing her age.
For all the magnificence of the Queen Mary, I think the Queen Elizabeth is even greater.

Great summary indeed and well presented, however it pains me to say it that did favour the Normandie over the QM. Its interiors were stunning, the vessel was curvy and only just lost out to the QM in speed despite having less powerful engines. The QM did Britain proud, but her greatness rested solely on patriotism than being the better vessel. Her engines were though astonishing and had they been fitted in the Normandie's more sleek and curved hull, the speed would've been a blue ribbon record prior to the SS United States (a smaller, less lavish liner).

Oh nice! Yes indeed, the Darlington forge was legendary - they provided all the stem and stern castings for Titanic and her sisters as well, among many many others!

If I could go back in time I would only observe things. I would want to be a ghost unable to interact. I just wanna see some of the amazing things humans made in there heyday. Can u imagine a port with all the sails in riggings. The great cavalry charges. The speeches that changed history. I just wanna see

Did you know the Queen Mary was originally going to be named Queen Victoria. When the directors of Cunard told the king we want to name her after our greatest Queen. He said “my wife will be delighted”.

Just wondering are you going to continue to do just ocean liners or would you get into world war II warships? I think there's one ocean on you need to do and that's the USS United States.
The big U. was a great ship indeed but had a very short service life. Such a shame she cant be preserved after all this time. I saw her a few times when I was a young seaman, she looked so impressive! Cheers from Australia.
I've seen a lot of RUclips videos on the big U and she's pretty sad completely gutted it would have to be completely redone would cost an enormous amount of money and maritime laws have changed and they would have to make a lot of adjustments to the ship to accommodate the new laws and it would just ruin her I think what they should do with it is tour out to a nice place in the ocean and scuttle her put her on the bottom and make her an artificial reef that would at least be a respectful death for the ship.
its a real shame that most of these great ships were scraped....the new generation wants ships like these!!!..these new aged cruise ships are ugly compared to what they had way back when!!!
