Thats a straw argument though. You claimed that any loss taken invalidates a victory, and while that's a nice artistic sentiment, it's not realistically true. In way, one fights for survival, or the the survival of others, or one's beliefs. But victory is always a by-product. There is still a winner. If the initial objective is met, the war is won. I met shadman once... He had a ten foot shadow, his eyes were see-through and he wore a sheet of mystery like a child ghost at halloween. When he spoke his words danced and sang out of his mouth to the rhythm of riddles and the key of poetry. He left as he arrived as it seemed the blink of an eye, not even my watch could tell me the time. He left me paralyzed with wounds un-cauterized, sinking into the blood of my own delusion and perception. Existence left the realm of contemplation and my very essence dissolved into the warm embrace of nothingness until only the idea of shadman remained... It was pretty fucked up.
Listening to Shadman on Sleepycast was a strange experience when I was 15. No shade, but the boys used to constantly talk him up as a chill and level-headed guy behind his controversy. With culture at the time, I was convinced his art didnt reflect his nature. Years ago I thought "Oh wow, he was kicked out of his dream school for drawing harmless porn? How unfair." but I realize he never specified contents, and this was before the assault or real depictions. Hes now dropped off the web and proved his superiors right about being a menace.

The guys touched on sleep deprivation psychosis, and I have a priveleged insight into this that I'd like to share, because it's so far outside the realm of most people's existence that it sounds almost fantastical. In reality, the realm is only so far away because most people don't open up the avenues that lead right to it. My "before": I had worked as a psych nurse for two years, and had a fair amount of experience with hallucinogenics as well as depression. The mind was not unfamiliar territory to me. Having spent hours upon hours (always outside of work) entering new worlds and being in a completely hallucinatory state I had always assumed that there must be some distinct difference in schizophrenics that causes a breakdown of their ability to discern reality from psychosis. I had never once had a single problem telling whether or not my brain had created something or if it was real, yet my patients would listen to people who weren't there, reach for nonexistent food or try to use nonexistent doors... Not coming from a place of superiority, but surely that must mean some connection isn't being made, some process ending in error, but I was wrong. I began using stimulants. Seemed natural enough, elevate mood, more energy, etc. And hey, if I don't feel the urge to eat as much or sleep as long, even more productivity, right? Well, escalation occurred as you'd expect, so we'll jump ahead to the part where I went for at least seven, but no more than 8 days without sleeping (memory is unclear towards the end believe it or not). Now, I don't mean "barely any" sleep, I don't mean "no more than ten minutes at a time", I mean 160-ish hours of wakefulness, a timeframe that you'll only be awake for if you're on something or have a seriously debilitating mental illness. The progression from baseline to fully psychotic with paranoid full sensory hallucinations was shockingly smooth, and I mean that. I'll preface this by saying that my specific experience was obviously influenced by stimulants, but the preface is barely needed as this kind of sleep deprivation doesn't occur in a vacuum. The psychonormative mind will shut the hell down long before. So, end of day one. Nothing. On stims, one day isn't even tiring. Now, moving into days two and three the shadow people start, as well as the very common, "Did someone say my name?" phenomenon. Sounds spooky, but it's natural. Your body is hypervigilant, assuming it has to have been up this long for a reason, so it's looking for danger. So your eyes detect movement (my guess is that it's often caused by the floaters in your eyes), then your brain says, "Look, person!" but nothing's there. By the end of day three it's routinely happening, and I'm actively ignoring the urge to look. Day four: mild auditory hallucinations. How could an auditory hallucination be mild? Surely hearing things would always make you freak the fuck out, right? Some of you may hear cars driving by right now, or music/conversation happening in an adjacent room, maybe a leaf blower down the block. What if you were to go to your roommate's bedroom and ask them to turn the music off but as you got closer you noticed it wasn't playing anymore? Or you look outside and no one is blowing any leaves? One of my personal examples, I had some podcast on the tv, cleaning the house, mom called, chatted, finished cleaning, etc. the podcast was still going as I got some food ready, and sat down to watch TV I noticed I never unmuted the TV after my mom called. My brain was just expecting to hear speech, so while I was cleaning and thinking my own thoughts it made up the background noise it was expecting to hear. I know from other times that if I had stopped and focused on the "podcast" it would've just faded away, no words were being spoken, just speech sounds. Day 5 brought tactile hallucinations. Feeling things. Which things? You know damn well which things. Bugs. Gnats crashing into my face, ants crawling up my legs. Tactile hallucinations were more rare, and somewhat preventable. If the body part was in my line of sight (or very well protected by clothing so that I knew nothing could touch it) I wouldn't feel anything there. Worst one: distinctly feeling a centipede fall onto my back and start crawling up towards my neck. How did I know what it was and that it fell from somewhere? Just what the instinct told me. I lept to my feet and shrieked while clawing at my back... but nothing. Again. Day 6: legitimate visual hallucinations, kind of like what Zach described with the horrifying face, except more prevalent and I didn't have to summon it willingly/unwillingly but deliberately/however he might describe it, they just happened whenever I would look at something for longer than a few seconds. Dark corner? Spiders pouring out of it. Picture? Moving, like in Harry Potter. Very slight though, just hair jostling in the wind, the person adjusting themselves in their chair for comfort, etc. Any random object? Sliding along whatever surface it's on. This one I chalk up to the fact that our eyes are constantly making microadjustments; likely some breakdown in the processing of that. Lastly, may as well say day seven but it simply came after the movements, day seven was hearing people talk. Real people, distinct voices, talking, about me. "He's always late." "Have you seen him?" "I think he's in the bathroom." "Is he here today?" "Does anyone know where he is?" "How long has he been in there?" Each progression added a new element of deception until I couldn't trust a single one of my fucking senses. You might be thinking, "You could still tell the voices weren't real, that the people weren't talking about you though." But no I couldn't. I assume it wasn't real, it would be uncharacteristic of them, but after a week of that? Two weeks? Your whole life? You would think everyone is just a two faced asshole who talks about you behind your back and that people are following you and tracking where you are and for how long. I didn't even mention the part about how I felt like I was occupying a dead, rotting shell and that everyone could tell what I was and that it felt like my teeth were turning into rotting meat and I accidentally imagined and then literally felt the pain of someone with a skeletal finger shove that bonefinger right into my ear and burst my eardrum... So uh, anyways, don't be an idiot haha. Drugs are fine, but stupidity can fuck you up.

Personally, I miss some of Shadman's more violent and gory works from his earlier days over all the NSFW raunchiness that's been showcased lately on the Shadbase. Such is my preference. Still, his art is amazing and I've been waiting for his guest appearance on the SleepyCast since I first found the RUclips channel.

I think he was working at that graphic design studio (dealing with those dumb penguin projects he was talking about in his video) at the time. I met shadman once... He had a ten foot shadow, his eyes were see-through and he wore a sheet of mystery like a child ghost at halloween. When he spoke his words danced and sang out of his mouth to the rhythm of riddles and the key of poetry. He left as he arrived as it seemed the blink of an eye, not even my watch could tell me the time. He left me paralyzed with wounds un-cauterized, sinking into the blood of my own delusion and perception. Existence left the realm of contemplation and my very essence dissolved into the warm embrace of nothingness until only the idea of shadman remained... It was pretty fucked up.

Listening to Shadman on Sleepycast was a strange experience when I was 15. No shade, but the boys used to constantly talk him up as a chill and level-headed guy behind his controversy. With culture at the time, I was convinced his art didnt reflect his nature.
Years ago I thought "Oh wow, he was kicked out of his dream school for drawing harmless porn? How unfair." but I realize he never specified contents, and this was before the assault or real depictions. Hes now dropped off the web and proved his superiors right about being a menace.

I already listened to this on sound cloud (I'm gonna to listen again though because I love you guys). But I wanted to say that at first, I thought Shad was...different. I'm not really into the stuff on the site, but I never thought the need to shame him for it. However, after hearing Shad's life, I respect him a lot more and fully support his decision. So thank you, Mr. Shadman and I hope you post unorthodox fetishes for years to come.

The guys touched on sleep deprivation psychosis, and I have a priveleged insight into this that I'd like to share, because it's so far outside the realm of most people's existence that it sounds almost fantastical. In reality, the realm is only so far away because most people don't open up the avenues that lead right to it.
My "before": I had worked as a psych nurse for two years, and had a fair amount of experience with hallucinogenics as well as depression. The mind was not unfamiliar territory to me. Having spent hours upon hours (always outside of work) entering new worlds and being in a completely hallucinatory state I had always assumed that there must be some distinct difference in schizophrenics that causes a breakdown of their ability to discern reality from psychosis. I had never once had a single problem telling whether or not my brain had created something or if it was real, yet my patients would listen to people who weren't there, reach for nonexistent food or try to use nonexistent doors... Not coming from a place of superiority, but surely that must mean some connection isn't being made, some process ending in error, but I was wrong.
I began using stimulants. Seemed natural enough, elevate mood, more energy, etc. And hey, if I don't feel the urge to eat as much or sleep as long, even more productivity, right? Well, escalation occurred as you'd expect, so we'll jump ahead to the part where I went for at least seven, but no more than 8 days without sleeping (memory is unclear towards the end believe it or not). Now, I don't mean "barely any" sleep, I don't mean "no more than ten minutes at a time", I mean 160-ish hours of wakefulness, a timeframe that you'll only be awake for if you're on something or have a seriously debilitating mental illness. The progression from baseline to fully psychotic with paranoid full sensory hallucinations was shockingly smooth, and I mean that.
I'll preface this by saying that my specific experience was obviously influenced by stimulants, but the preface is barely needed as this kind of sleep deprivation doesn't occur in a vacuum. The psychonormative mind will shut the hell down long before. So, end of day one. Nothing. On stims, one day isn't even tiring. Now, moving into days two and three the shadow people start, as well as the very common, "Did someone say my name?" phenomenon. Sounds spooky, but it's natural. Your body is hypervigilant, assuming it has to have been up this long for a reason, so it's looking for danger. So your eyes detect movement (my guess is that it's often caused by the floaters in your eyes), then your brain says, "Look, person!" but nothing's there. By the end of day three it's routinely happening, and I'm actively ignoring the urge to look.
Day four: mild auditory hallucinations. How could an auditory hallucination be mild? Surely hearing things would always make you freak the fuck out, right? Some of you may hear cars driving by right now, or music/conversation happening in an adjacent room, maybe a leaf blower down the block. What if you were to go to your roommate's bedroom and ask them to turn the music off but as you got closer you noticed it wasn't playing anymore? Or you look outside and no one is blowing any leaves? One of my personal examples, I had some podcast on the tv, cleaning the house, mom called, chatted, finished cleaning, etc. the podcast was still going as I got some food ready, and sat down to watch TV I noticed I never unmuted the TV after my mom called. My brain was just expecting to hear speech, so while I was cleaning and thinking my own thoughts it made up the background noise it was expecting to hear. I know from other times that if I had stopped and focused on the "podcast" it would've just faded away, no words were being spoken, just speech sounds.
Day 5 brought tactile hallucinations. Feeling things. Which things? You know damn well which things. Bugs. Gnats crashing into my face, ants crawling up my legs. Tactile hallucinations were more rare, and somewhat preventable. If the body part was in my line of sight (or very well protected by clothing so that I knew nothing could touch it) I wouldn't feel anything there. Worst one: distinctly feeling a centipede fall onto my back and start crawling up towards my neck. How did I know what it was and that it fell from somewhere? Just what the instinct told me. I lept to my feet and shrieked while clawing at my back... but nothing. Again.
Day 6: legitimate visual hallucinations, kind of like what Zach described with the horrifying face, except more prevalent and I didn't have to summon it willingly/unwillingly but deliberately/however he might describe it, they just happened whenever I would look at something for longer than a few seconds. Dark corner? Spiders pouring out of it. Picture? Moving, like in Harry Potter. Very slight though, just hair jostling in the wind, the person adjusting themselves in their chair for comfort, etc. Any random object? Sliding along whatever surface it's on. This one I chalk up to the fact that our eyes are constantly making microadjustments; likely some breakdown in the processing of that.
Lastly, may as well say day seven but it simply came after the movements, day seven was hearing people talk. Real people, distinct voices, talking, about me.

"Have you seen him?"
"I think he's in the bathroom."
"Is he here today?"
"Does anyone know where he is?"
"How long has he been in there?"
Each progression added a new element of deception until I couldn't trust a single one of my fucking senses. You might be thinking, "You could still tell the voices weren't real, that the people weren't talking about you though." But no I couldn't. I assume it wasn't real, it would be uncharacteristic of them, but after a week of that? Two weeks? Your whole life? You would think everyone is just a two faced asshole who talks about you behind your back and that people are following you and tracking where you are and for how long. I didn't even mention the part about how I felt like I was occupying a dead, rotting shell and that everyone could tell what I was and that it felt like my teeth were turning into rotting meat and I accidentally imagined and then literally felt the pain of someone with a skeletal finger shove that bonefinger right into my ear and burst my eardrum... So uh, anyways, don't be an idiot haha. Drugs are fine, but stupidity can fuck you up.

Not sure. But I remember finding him first on Newgrounds years ago, a bit before he restarted Shadbase. I think he was working at that graphic design studio (dealing with those dumb penguin projects he was talking about in his video) at the time.
