Our final Ask The Mito Doc webcast of 2022, What to Expect as an Adult Mito Patient was presented by Dr. Michio Hirano, MD of Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York, NY and moderated by UMDF's Support and Education Associate Margaret Moore. It is a hot topic, with over 75 people viewing the live webcast. The presentation provided helpful information surrounding the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare as well as diagnosis and management for adult mito patients. Dr. Hirano shed light on the current medical theories surrounding mitochondria, Parkinsons and Alzheimers. He stressed the importance that exercise and diet have on our mitochondria, especially as we age. Dr. Hirano closed out the webinar with the very important point regarding the lack of data on effective treatment, he concluded this is a big opportunity where the collective Mitochondrial Community can work together to create and participate in clinical trials to identify effective treatments.
