At aboot 9 min in if you look closely you can see where the metal outer ring is already trying to break loose from the rubber on the inside. That part should have been replaced. It wasn't an OEM balancer, that was a Dorman replacement part. Would be interesting to know how many miles was on it prior to this removal. I do feel for the owner as the timing chain tensioners and chain maintenance will be a costly affair. Also, the factory 4.0 balancers are really bad to toss the metal ring towards the engine leaving the belt to run on the rubber looking like it's double sheaved. The metal outer ring will then cut into the crank position sensor and cause poor running and eventually a crank no start situation.. I'm having to replace the balancer on my 04 Sport Track for this reason before it gets into a no crank situation.

If you have a bad harmonic balancer you’ll hear rattle. It will go away and come back periodically. That how o found mine. Rubber inside rotted off and spun inside.

I knew a dude that welded the harmonic balancer back on the 307 Chevy Small block in his pickup cause he was tired of putting it back on so many times!! Worked out good till they guy he sold it to (another buddy of mine) wanted to replace the front seal on it and discovered the welded balancer. He then found someone else to sell it to!!!

I find it hard to believe “rust” makes a difference after its bolted down. Your fixing a reinstall part after its already bolted down. Rust won’t push a bolt out to cause an issue. It’s localized after the fact.

On the reluctor ring not on the bolt….

@@sharpcarco so rust on the reluctor ring can cause issues after it’s bolted on. Like a counter balance. Making it wobble after it’s bolted down?
