Thanks for this intro, Matt. I am happy that Topaz has put these into one app so I can see the effects of each and choose which works best. I have a batch of very noisy, low light photos that I was about to give up on - but I impressed with my first effort to improve one with Photo AI. Like you, I hope to see it get better and better!

Thanks, Matt, a really insightful overview. I've been using the 3 Topaz plugins for years now and been trying Photo AI for a couple of weeks. Looking at the relatively small size of the Photo AI download, I think it is just a wrapper or different UI for the existing suite of tools which probably explains why they can give it free to existing users. I'm with you on the conclusions so far, too. Photo AI is generally quicker overall and the results are pretty much the same as using the individual tools. My usual workflow is to apply DeNoise then Sharpen onto layers in Photoshop as they sometimes greatly improve one part of an image and do horrible things to other parts which need masking out. Just try using Sharpen AI on an airplane with a spinning propeller! My bottom line (so far) is if they started asking for extra money for the Photo AI interface , I'd pass and keep using the individual plug-ins.

I have the three-bundle from Topaz and really like them. I also have gotten the dXo Pure Raw 2 for strictly the RAW files and this all-in-one program so to speak does it all and converts it to a DNG. If needed, further editing can be tweaked in the Topaz bundle. But as you said, this is only if you are pixel-peeping. If one looks at the original size picture even on a 4k 27" monitor, you really have to stretch to see the difference. I love editing pictures as a hobby, so I'm going to use both to see which one evolves to be better. This video made me think - and that's great. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Matt. I find that 95% of the time on my wildlife shots I use DeNoise and have no need to use Sharpen. DeNoise does a very nice job with sharpening, actually, and I only tend to use Sharpen AI when there is subject blur or the subject is slightly out of focus. So, I think I'd rather have separate plug-ins rather than putting it all into one. My mind might change if Photo AI gives better "tinkering" choices in the future. I'm the kind of person that doesn't like to change when I have something that is working well for me, and the Sharpen AI and DeNoise duo have worked really well for me.

Thanks for your honest opinion. I agree with most points. Too me Photo AI still feels a bit unfinished and I sincerely hope the will improve it further very soon. The most needed function is an option to manually correct masking. With regard to the existing apps, Topaz already announced, that the will now be updated less frequently and that their focus is on Photo AI.

  • @markburgess276

Thanks Matt. I have the bundle but share your reservations. For high ISO bird photography I find Denoise is great for noise and reasonable sharpening. Sharpen AI often introduces artifacts and tries too hard in areas that lack texture. When I use Sharpen AI I mask out most of the layer and so it only applies where the image softness needs rescuing

I also have most all photo programs and put an image through all most all the time. But I went back to some of my 2015 Milky Ways that I have re edited over the years with a newer program. First I had to use Lr most or all the time for lens corrections where C1 did not have any especially for unchipped lenses like the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. And every program has gotten noise reduction with sharpness even good till a year or two ago. I have had all the original Topaz programs through 5daydeals and things got better over time BUT a lot to work with spending many hours to boot on a image like walk away and come back etc.Since Denoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel I use all the time. The key to Photo AI is ALL are in it and you can adjust each like separately AND the output is very fast. As a hobbyist is very cost effective and you get results that Pros pay others to get images good because they are busy out getting images and doing tours. I started with a A7s 12MP low noise camera but all you hear is get more MP's like 50 or 62 or even 100 but after years you learn a 12MP will do a poster size any way. We have been in a digital world for 20+ years and only now has software gotten great meaning it is not the camera or lens but the software that gets a sharp noise free image. I can edit a old 5MP image and it will look like a 100MP pro image, it is why cell phones are doing so great. So Photo AI does it fast and smart in little time that only us old timers of film and early digital could ever dream of. I could get into all the sales hype of sharp wide open lenses and high MP cameras costing many gold teeth, just dust off an old camera or edit a very old image and you will see how spoiled the new photographers are. Topaz has done it and able to use externally of a main program. Matt did a Topaz video of editing using all of Topaz apps from beginning to end and the video was long this video took less than 2 min to show from start to end Photo AI. Remember when PS and Lr each were $800+ and each update also each thanks to C1 now a monthly cost.

I've steered away from a Topaz a while and have found Luminar AI an easy way to make my work flow easy and attractive. I batch process dozens and many times hundreds of photos for shadows, highlights, color, adding light to one or more faces in my photos and export them quickly. Luminar has been great. I get my work done super fast and my clients get their photos faster than ever. Is Topaz Photo AI a good alternative? They have what seems like a very good bundle but what I want to know is how fast can I add a number of adjustments and can I batch process lots of photos as good as Luminar? Does the software automatically find faces so I can smooth skin and add light to the faces in a batch? Thanks!

I had installed this but it really messed up my file defaults on my system and also added its name to both jpg and png file formats. So for instance if I was in photoshop and did a save as a jpg it would show under file format TopazAIphotojpg. I had to reset all my image defaults but it still had the weird name issue. I ended up deleting it. Reached out to them and they said it wasn't normal but couldn't help me. Plus since it was an msi install file instead of exe it took a long time to install. Anyone else have any issues similar to mine with changing image defaults or name issue?

I’ve been using all programs for quite a while now and have the same feeling as you have. The separate apps are better, especially mask tweaking, but PAI is faster if you use more than one filter. I also don’t like the RAW conversion, I will keep on using C1. PAI does a really bad colour shift in the orange spectrum when feeding it a RAW file. The program has potential, but they aren’t there yet.

Here's one way to think about it. If some one said, you could buy a camera for $2000 that ISO 4000 was really noisy. Or for $2150, you could get the same camera, but a slightly better model - where the ISO performance at 4000, looked like 400 instead. So for the extra $150 you got a much better resulting photo - who wouldn't do it? I don't know many people that wouldn't. Just something to think about :-)

But now, I notice it takes a long time to process an image. I have a new MacBook Pro with an M1 chip, so it's not the computer. Anyone else notice this longer processing time. I was hoping that this Topaz product would be faster not longer??? I have a question regarding a specific use of the software. I have a lot of old film negatives I want to scan and I would love to do some upscaling to do large prints. I tried the trial version of Gigapixel AI and I was blown away by what it could do with the faces. To make it look natural I tend to leave a little bit of noise in there so it still retains some of that grain. Can I get a similar result with Photo AI by leaving the noise setting at a lower number? Since the upscaling part of Photo AI doesn't have any setting I'm wondering if the sharpening part of the software can do the work that Gigapixel AI does on its own? I don't want to end up with clean plastic looking faces without any noise. I hope that I'm making sense. Thanks for the video!

Hi David. I usually resize when I’m done and I have a need for it. Resizing isn’t something you really do if you don’t have a need. So if you are upsizing, it’s because something came up (the only reason I can really see is a print) where you needed a large version so do it then. very nice tuto. I thought they had merged all features of plugins into photo ai. I use topaz products for 20 years, first with photofxlab interface for lightroom, then they did studio 1 which was nice merging most of their products and made them faster and then stopped supporting studio 1 and made studio 2 which is messy with global presets mixing impression, .... and recently stopped supporting studio1 and 2. they focused only on AI and needed separate plugins for best performances and now, perhaps due to competition with ON1 and Skylum, they come back to a "studio3=photo ai" with reduced features in denoise... in which they will add some "raw enhancements" perhaps to have a better raw development tool. Very confusing. Skylum is also confusing and I wonder if they know where to go changing interface, filters, workflow all the time (Luminar 3, 4, ai, neo). Finally only LRC/ACR, Capture one and ON1 remain consistent always improving product in a very clear track being compatible with the past,... Just sharing personal feeling !

For instance, I used it with a 60y old, very small photo the size of 2 stamps with an up-scaling factor of 6 (increasing the total area by 6*6 = 36) and the result is stunning.
