Por eso es que la ciudad de San José aparece con una población de apenas 350 mil personas, lo cual no es del todo cierto, ya que eso se refiere a los distritos que son parte del centro económico como el Distrito El Carmen, Distrito Hospital, Distrito Catedral, Distrito La Merced y Mata Redonda .La mayoría de familias se fueron a vivir a los suburbios y sus grandes y elegantes casas las vendieron o las alquilan y hoy son hoteles, restaurantes, y todo tipo de comercios. Este sector es el mejor conservado y el más elegante de la ciudad junto con el Barrio Escalante. Estos barrios están ubicados al norte de la Avenida Central Los otros 4 distritos que están más alejados del centro pero también forman parte de la ciudad y son los que tienen más población son: Distrito Zapote, Distrito San Francisco, Distrito de Pavas y el Distrito Los Hatillos. Además la ciudad de San José forma una sola ciudad o Área Metropolitana que son los cantones de Aserrí, Desamparados, Tibás, Escazú, Santa Ana, Ciudad Colón, Moravia, Goicoechea, La Unión (cantón de la Provincia de Cartago), Curridabat. En total esta primera línea de Área Metropolitana tiene una población de aproximadamente 1 millón 800 mil habitantes. Pero también existe los que se conoce como San José Gran área Metropolitana que la conforman las cuatro ciudades más importantes y pobladas, cada una de ellas con varios de sus cantones que conforman una extensa ciudad de 2,044 Km cuadrados y una población de 3, 400,000 mil habitantes.
