  • You may not have heard of the Garifuna people. They’re people with a unique culture who live mostly in coastal Central America. Descendants of runaway African slaves and local indigenous groups, they have their own language, religion and lands. But the Garifuna in Honduras say their land is under siege. Several of their leaders have been killed as they fight to defend it. Private investors and even Honduras' government are now after their land. Correspondent Gerry Hadden has our story.

Nazli Nazareth I was thinking the same thing. That investor knows he is taking advantage of the situation because he didn't want to continue the interview on the Garifunas. I guess it is ok for him because he is an investor with money. No respect for the people or its land.

BRKLYN 29 totally agree with u. That part where he dare to say that it really upset me. I'm not garifuna, but garifunas are part of my ppl my country n the Honduran culture. It's upsetting how a foreign can come to Honduras n say such a thing.

Nazli Nazareth I bet he would shut me down if I tried to buy land in Canada, real talk. I blame the govt too because they should have laws in place to protect the people. From my understanding, the govt doesn't care.

I was born in Honduras and raised in the USA and just by watching this video I get really upset why¿ because I see a lot of ignorance in my garifuna people they don't know there's land rights and theses rich people invading and making it worst. I've seen all these tourist coming to Honduras and the government let them purchase our land so easily. It's just sad and it feels like it will never get better because of the corruption. #CGTNAMERICA

Powerkingsmusic i remember when i was little my aunt took me to la ceiba to see the garifuna dancing, she would say " vamos a ver los morenitos bailando" it was some of the best memories as a child,i remember they put like these baskets or something on their heads and walk like it was nothing, the garifuna also have their own language and invented one of honduras iconic dances 'punta' which alot of people love, the honduran government is taking land because they are poor and with cruise ships coming in all the time now they want to push off tge garifuna, i believe this is wrong, the garifuna are a big part of honduras and there us no need for violence towards them, the people are peacful and happy.

Omg how awful, when you don't have God, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in your life in your heart or government you don't know how to live or treat people with love and respect! I'm thankful to live in the U.S. our country was established under the law of God coming from the Ten Commandments that's why we are a blessed country. Although there's good and bad here but it started out being based on God's law and blessed the land and they stood on the rules and gave opportunity for wealth for anyone who who wanted it. I pray Honduras people turn to Christ and do what's right to their people!
