King's Bounty 2 is a bit weird, but still pretty fun. What's your opinion about this tactical RPG? Play or nay?
Edit: Aivar is actually voiced by Doug Cockle, Geralt's voice actor from the Witcher games. Damn, I could never tell.
I guess my argument about "The Witcher 2.5" is even stronger now, lol.
Play.
Play
his voice is really different in this compared to the witcher....
Don't take it as an rpg... look at it as a "heroes of might and magic" game and you will see it has done a good job and is not weird at all. All previous entries are similar in gamestyle but are rather topdown view than 3rd person, combat is the same etc.
Samo tako nastavi
The previous King's Bounty games had a colorful cartoony visual style full of charm. This looks like a generic Dragon Age clone.
I was just thinking that I can't stand these cartoonish mobile phone graphics. Dragon Age had much more style and was grimmer.
I just started playing and I was thinking that it seems like a low grade Dragons Age. I like turn based rpgs though, so we will see
I don't understand the purpose of going so far as to fully flesh out character movement and appearance if when it comes to the core game play outside of exploration, none of it matters.
It just feels like they tried to take two of the best ingredients from two very different dishes and mashed em together in the hopes that good + good = great, without ever considering if those two things complimented eachother.
Good point.
fun fact: Aivar's voice actor is Doug Cockle, (voicing Geralt in the witcher games)
He was a great drama teacher
I almost feel like they would have done better if they didn't name this King's Bounty II... People expect a KB game and this is not one, odd choice especially given there isn't much in this genre with HoMM pretty much dead. Hopefully some issues will be fixed in patches and it'll be worth picking up on sale later.
Yes, I can't help but think the same. Maybe brand it a spin-off rather than a straight sequel
Let us hope Songs of Conquest can fix that problem.
Strangely enough the new Disciples: Liberation looks more like a KB game than this (and nothing like a Disciples game).
I've no idea why they thought this 3rd person view woud make this game better if they can't afford or lack the skill to make better looking characters and animations.
I'm still curious enough to try it though.
@@7dayspking Just my personal impression - I really liked tactical combat and army management aspect of the original, which was like 90 per cent of gameplay. This new one however looks more like some kind of a walking - delivery boy simulator, with occasional combat mini game thrown in for old times sake. To make it even worse, everything looks unbelievably generic. If there was a special award for the most unoriginal setting ever, this game would win it, hands down.
11 hours in and i find it really fun. would love to have a sprint button. have speed affect actual character speed or a sprint button. more units to play with. recuring battles so i can farm some xp. and some other things. but overall it is a great game.
Huh, that's weird. Did they purposely make the horse and sprinting slower due to performance issues with rendering in objects from lod distance too quickly and the engine not being able to keep up? I just can't justify any reason why they'd make it like they did
2:25 nah, i like to know what i'm getting in to and usually just save and reload if the game is not straightforward with the results of my choice.
Immersion breaking, is it not? I mean, you never know how someone else will react-
Have you played previous King's Bounty games? KB2 seems to be a major shift from strategy game with RPG elements into RPG with strategy elements and that doesn't sit well with some fans of the previous games. It also doesn't look that great as RPG because in heart, it is still a strategy game more than RPG. I didn't buy it yet, it will sit in my wishlist for a while longer, but as a long term fan of KB series and a player that never hates a game just because it is different that the last one, I will definitely play it one day.
So KB2 is a shift to RPG with strategy elements but it also more of a strategy game than an RPG....um, ok.
@@FullMetalB If you go from 90% strategy/10% RPG to 60%/40%, you still have more strategy elements in the game. It gets fuzzy around 50/50 split. They obviously wanted to make it more of an RPG but the base game is still a strategy.
Not exactly.
They already made the exact same game as Kings Bounty 2, at least the publisher's 1C main developer, around 2006, but it failed miserably in the west and was only mildly successful in Russia. That game was called Ascension to the Throne.
Now almost 15 years later they again tried to make almost the same game but because it's name is mostly unknown they deliberately took the name of their most successful title and slapped it onto this abomination of a game.
They didn't cared about King's Bounty or it's legacy, they were only interested in "doing justice" to their original game. And it again failed miserably, only this time most of the world will remember it because it holds the name of a game that is better and dear to the hearth of many Turn Based RPG players.
@@Malisa1990 Hmm, that game has 90% rating, why do you say it failed? I didn't know it existed, maybe I'll try it. KB2 is at 63% now, though.
@@jaroslavchnurik8783 Because it sold poorly, because they planned to make 3 games with 3 different main characters with the same story told from different perspectives but only made the first two for the warrior and amazon girl, and because even then the game was clunky and a little bit of a mess. Also considering the game is 15 years old Ill say it's much better than Kings Bounty 2 in comparison. If only because for that time it was a serviceable and somewhat ok-ish game, something that KB2 definitely isn't in modern times.
The game called " Accession to the Throne " had this 3rd person exploration / Tactical turn based combat system.
So underrated. It's an awesome game.
Kings Bounty (also HOMM) were brilliant tactics and strategy games, with RPG elements and rather silly, lightweight stories tacked on. Kings Bounty 2 looks like they tried to reverse that. It's an RPG/walking simulator, with a lightweight tactical battle system tacked on.
They definitely need a sprint, like a really fast level sprint, the mage city is absolutely horrible for moving around in even fir just quests and not actually exploring the city its so slow and takes like 30 minutes to run back and forth between quests and such the horse also refuses to run in the city which makes it worse
This game is so frustrating... there some really good things about it. The battles are HARD and each one feels like a boss encounter (if playing mage, anyhow.) Despite the "old graphics," the world can be astoundingly beautiful and is carefully thought out to provide a lot of jaw-dropping scenes. And Katherine at least, has great dialogue. However... everything about it is clunky, and lost a ton of King's Bounty staples like rage, spouses, achievements, the smooth isometric movement that made a game of grabbing loot and avoiding enemies, and even the music... so much of what made it just a sheer joy to lose oneself in. It's also a horrible design to make SETS depend on RNG quest rewards, doubly without warning the player. And the unfinished ending is just like... what? So although they're patching to improve Quality of Life, it's just really hard to recommend, even though enjoyable and a several good things about it. It's just so frustrating to see King's Bounty take big steps back, instead of enhancements and the fresh coat of paint they needed...
Try the whole series of the original King's Bounty. It was crazy LONG and had a lot of strategy involved. It resembled Might and Magic III pretty similarly tactically. The originals were RLY hard. FR. Never got to the end of one of the games.
Do you know that the 2008 game was actually a reboot and not the original ?
The original game released in 1990 and predates HoM&M.
All the previous games were super easy with the easy and normal difficulties... with the hard difficult they were very punishing, but great experience. finished every game with the hardest difficulty with first play tho. except the mistake i made in the first one as played with normal.
But i can see how the games migh seem very hard to some players that are not very advanced in this type of games.
@@Dimens1onerthe problem with most complex difficulty is that this game is frustrating to get units. If you lose key units you need to travel a lot to get the same ones... I did it back in hard but now I don't have time for it, so I do it in normal
Personally I think the game is great. As in Im definitely gonna put at least a hundred hours into it... But i do really feel like this could have been worked on longer, doesn't feel completely polished, other than that it's ace. I feel future dcs will also bring great new mechanics
Nice. I currently play Neverwinter Nights 1 and probably gonna put many hours into it either :D I haven't played an rpg for a long time so it is nice to do it again.
Does it matter what weapon you have equipped? Seem like your character just controls the battles and isn’t in it?
Got alot of time on your hands dang lol
They even put Yen in the game as playable and Geralt's voice actor. If you can ignore some rip offs and outdated stuff it's still very good game to buy on discount.
Previous game Kings Bounty Legends was better in every way (maybe expect graphic but this isn't that good too) and have even better dialog, without voice acting and face animation but fun to read, whole game was extreme generic and colorful fantasy but it don't treat self very serious
Legends was good. Armored Princess: Crossworlds was when they really put it all together. Warriors of the North and Dark Side were good also, but you have to be able to forgive a few more bugs and jank.
Story driven with a bit mostly linear operation and a turn based grid compact system. Are you sure you're not playing d&d 5th edition module?
I am really enjoying it so far. I actually enjoy the exploration and battle system. Overall it needs some improvement and hopefully future patches will fix some of the issues such as movement speed and textures. I think some character models are a lot better than others.
May I ask whether there are frequent combats (there were a lot, like A LOT, in KB the legend) or is it mostly exploration/puzzles?
@@cesareborgia6431 l think it has a nice balance between the exploration and combat but l have found that l have been exploring a lot more due to gaining experience to defeat tougher battles. This is my first time playing any Kings bounty title so l am very inexperienced but l do enjoy exploring the world and it's very satisfying when you defeat a tougher army.
There are puzzles but not as many as l thought which is good. I have found most puzzles are involved in the side quests and for the most part not too frustrating. I am still playing the game and the overall storyline and world has kept me interested.
I hope that helps.
@@jeritron74 Yes it helps! Thank you very much.
FYI in KB the legend (and the add-ons) the maps were full of wanderring creatures. You could not make a few paces without fighting them. The game was a rapid succession of combats. This one seems very different
@@cesareborgia6431 The new game sounds very different. There are no wandering enemies, battles usually take place as part of the main story or side quest. The enemies are always stationary and the battle won't start until you enter the circle and you always have the option to retreat. Some enemies block new areas of the map until you are strong enough to defeat them.
@@jeritron74 not sure it's for me. I'm not into RPG (I tried Baldur Gate back in 98-99 and rapidly stopped as I was bored to death).
I came to KB the Legend because it was presented as close to Heroes of Might & Magic (not that close actually but I love it and its 3 add-ons).
Thx again!!!
Ofc I’m gonna play it, even despite reviews saying they expected more. Where else do you get heroes of might and magic experience these days??
My thoughts exactly, and I'm a huge isometric tactical games
True. Even though I haven't played it yet. Waiting for a new HOMM game seems like it would take forever... might as well play something similar to it...
The game you are looking for is Songs of Conquest. Not out yet, but there is your answer.
Fort Triumph? Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous? Eador: Imperium? Age of Wonders 3?
@@admiraltonydawning3847
AOW- 2014
Eador- 2017(wasn’t into it btw, masters of the broken world felt more immersive)
For triumph- haven’t played this one, but it’s advertised as an xcom clone
WOTR- calling this one a HOMM experience is a stretch at best. Battles on the campaign map with limited functionality. Crusade system is fun but it’s not what the game is about when you spend 10-15 minutes on a global map between hours of exploration, dialogues and real fights.
May buy this down the line, when it's cheaper or used with a few patches and updates. Nice video btw.
My thoughts exactly.
@Dan Z even so I'll wait. Still have quite a few games to play and these type of games have a tendency to be really cheap a few months after launch.
Bruh it’s $6.74 on psn right now I might have to get it.
I fuckn lost it with that Jim Carrey SNL reference
Just bought it for $12 cdn on the switch sale today. I’ve only done an hour so far so wish me luck.
Have fun!
From what I learnt, it's best to be yourself
A mage trying to be warrior, and warrior trying to pretend being a mage - are much harder than Mage being Mage and Warrior being Warrior
Ascension to the throne & Ascension to the throne Valkyrie are very the same games like this, older, but i think great, hidden gems, if u ask me and also published and developed by 1C. This looks very similar, but hm, i might probably give it a try
Can't wait to get my hands on it. There's an update coming soon to address the slow movements and a few other quality of life options like a fast forward battle option and a quick save etc. I love RPGs in this vein and feel a responsibility to support developers that make games like this.
Man this game seems up my alley but I know the no sprint button would be torture for me…
Funny how this was a top down Heroes of Might and Magic style game and now it is like this. Hmmmm. Also, I am actually playing the old Kings Bounty these days! Haha.
I'm definitely enjoying it but I'd be lying if I didn't say it has flaws. It's my first KB game so I don't have much to speak of in that regard, but I've played hundreds of rpg's both turn based and not. I'm happy with the purchase, although I probably could have saved the $5 on the upgraded version. Between this and Tales of Arise, I'm set on console rpg's for the next several months.
Am I the only one that finds the shift from first person action RPG exploration to isometric turn based RPG combat a bit jarring? "Exploration works one way, combat works a different way" was a game design mechanic that was common in the 80's/early 90's and makes the game feel really dated (and for the record I wasn't a huge fan of it then either).
What other games have that system?
The original Kings Bounty for Sega and Hero’s of Might and Magic did it much better. Much more streamlined
Are you familiar with those?
Talking about this game tonight on my gaming podcast. I loved Kings Bounty for it's strategy based gameplay, but now that they added a Witcher/RPG type element .. it almost works against it.
Hmmmmm. I'm still playing it though (because I do dig the HOMM type gameplay). Also .. no 60 FPS is making me crazzzyyy!!
It indeed works against it. It makes no sense, really. You're playing as a single character but once you enter combat you're suddenly an entire army.
KBs world map was a little more "abstract", so while it displayed you as only a person on a horse, it was kinda implied that you're actually an entire army.
KB2 just seems like two different games that weirdly switch between each other. :/
@@ThePC007 I agree its like 2 games pushed together - and im all about single player RPGs but im not sure it entirely works .. also i cant get over no 60FPS..it dips below 30 too
Dude, please make a video on Drova! I just played the teaser, free from steam, and I loved the massive Gothic inspiration. It's so Piranha Bitey!
Im playing this game and it definitely needs time to boil. I Hope they got enough sales to continue to update this game.
Im interested in it, but not so much to buy it full price.
Also, the new Tales game is around the corner, so I'm probably waiting for a sale on this one
I'll wait a while before getting it, they will surely polish it up a great deal and fix most issues. Besides; they're famous for making DLC/expansion content on an assembly line, there will be much more coming, judging by the previous game and its many add-on's. This has great potential, I played Crossworlds and Warriors of the North for hundreds of hours.
I kind of love the idea of "Ideals"!
I have just bought it and gave it an hour, because I loved KB 1... and holy shit.. the walking is so annoying.. I miss te old horse clicking.... this does not make the world better at all.
The arena and unit models could also be better, I barely see them, not as magical as previous KB titles.
I dont know whether this game is good or not but I certainly know now that there is king's bounty 1
Thanks for keeping us up to date on the latest RPGs. Great Review!
I personally feel the 3d first person view in exploration only slows down the game. The Battles are fine, but due to the slow exploration they are to spaced out. I lost interest in it once I hit around level 15, was just to terious to keep exploring.
Aivar is actually voiced by Doug Cockle aka Geralt so his voice actor is more than just "not bad", I guess the problem here is with the directing team.
Wait, what? 4 real? How the hell I didn't notice that, holy fuck.
@@click4gameplay yeah, just double checked to make sure. I'm surprised you didn't notice the similarity :D
King's bounty 2 is a 5/10 priced at 50 or 60 euros(wich includes powerful in game items). The rpg elements are very bland, quests usually have 2 decisions BUT your choice will get you aligment points. Meaning when you level up you get perk points that you can spend on one of the 4 skill trees if you have aligment/faction points. Meaning you will need to select the quest choices based on how you want to level up your character. The game itself is a lazy console port with all the problems in the world. The game is about 20-30 hours long with a linear and badly written story. The combat is very poorly implemented and makes up for about 20% of the game. At some point you hit unit caps, meaning you can recruit more than 10 spearmen even if you have more leadership thus the game forcing you to switch to level 2-5 units pretty early wich makes the combat much easier since all you have to do is find the vendor and you are stronger. There is also a stupid mana system where you have a global mana resources(like gold), you use it to cast spells, learn spells from scrolls and upgrade them wich means as a mage you will always hunt for mana and be stressed about since you can literally run out of mana in the final portion of the game thus ending your run. You can also run out of gold in your run thus resulting in a game over since there are no "renewable" resources. Kings bounty 2 has about 10% of the features that kings bounty crossworlds had and it appeals to the broad audience, if you are in the broad audience its great. The game also doesn't have any difficulty selection so for being 20-30 hours long it doesnt even have replay value. Maybe a 20 euros game if you instal the speed mod since you move like a turtle.
Excellent & to the point review of this game sir for us who eats RPG's for *Breakfast, Dinner, Lunch & Supper!* 😂 👍
Wish Wasteland 3 had this 3d person camera for exploration
My fear is when someone say the difficulty is ok but they're not veteran of tactical games....
Because games nowadays are FKING easy and I'm tired of it. It's always too easy and to balance that devs just put a nightmare difficulty with no intelligence : multiply ennemies stats. So it becomes no fun and unplayable....
5:24 I didn't know they also cast John Cena for this game...
I love your sticky syrupy accent
I wonder why developers made Ascension to the Throne 2 and call it King's Bounty 2.
Right on point!
Yeah as he went to that fighting ring or whatever, i was like it looks to me just like ascension to the throne, there u have too combat in turn base and moving like a normal rpg etc. except the graphics, dont know if it was developed or published by 1C as well. I like that game, if this is anything like that, hm, im tempted.
I'd call it 3 because Ascension had a second game already.
@@admiraltonydawning3847 Valkyrie is a standalone addon.
This looked really good a few weeks ago when I first saw its announcement, I decided to pick up the old ones as they were on sale and played The Legend for a couple of hours and was quite impressed. Immediately King's Bounty 2 feels really different and not necessarily in a good way, the camera change, while that with character customization was a selling point for me, takes away a really distinguishing feature that had me liking The Legend. The movement is also really unfinished, the way you glide frictionless after moving for half a second makes it feel like an early, early access game, I think i'm literally less than an hour in right now but I'm hesitant to go beyond the 2 hour refund mark, it sounds like you're liking it, being further in, so maybe there's hope.
Does is matter what weapon your character has equipped?
Was very interested in this game, but will wait for a sale on the Switch version.
Currently busy with the older BioWare titles, so not in a hurry.
For someone that played all the king Bounty games, I am still on the fence if I will pick it up.
Hmm I think I'll wait till they polish it a little bit (hopefully) and then definitely going to give it a try, I loved the first game and it's expansions. I just hope they'll fix stuff, like movement/running speed and other stuff based on player feedback.
I love how you're using music from the previous KB games, lol.
This game looks like Ascension to the Throne.
It's still a good game? Maybe i can buy it from GoG
@@MultiNumenor Gameplay wise it's still holding up pretty good.
It looks more like a continuation of Ascension to the Throne game series, than Kings Bounty.
One thing i dont like is not being able to fight when i want to, I understand it keeps the game balanced and stops you from farming until you’re a powerhouse but this makes it fun and easier to be able to strengthen your troops and level up your hero i dont like doing quests and sometimes not having a fight for 3-4 quests it gets rather boring running around without fighting for hours
Should i play the previous kings bounty games before tackling this one?
I played them all, and this looks completely unrelated, other than being set in the same "universe".
It is worth playing... but not for that price. This is a 29.99 game at most
There is only one thing to say about this game: Look how they massacred my boy!
I really want to play this game but idk if ima like the battle system
It just looks a little too rough for my tatse to be honest.
Bummer that you can not chose male or female on the classes...
Kings Bounty for Sega Genesis was one of my favorites, leading into Hero’s of might and magic.
I would of picked this up if it was more like the Sega game. This is too much story and running around. The original was simple, fun, and you could get through the game relatively quickly. I played it many times through.
This looks generic and bland
You should check out Kalyskah if you're looking for an open world RPG that's a bit.... different.
A bit on the fence about getting this, the concept does seem interesting, but beyond that it looks like an ok game. Don't think I'll likely get it anytime soon, plus I saw Spiffing Brit's video about this and the exploit he found literally breaks the game by literally getting the best units in the game for free and endlessly stocking up on them. So that needs to be fixed cause the exploit is really easy to do cause it's just a 2 or 3 step process. Am bummed out there's no character creation and it doesn't sound good if the story doesn't make sense within the first few hours in the game. I disagree with the comment saying that this looks like a Dragon Age copy, think graphically aside from the combat seems more similar to Bless Unleashed
Not having multiple difficulty settings is a huge negative to me
@Dan Z the big problem for me is I like my games really hard so a lot of times when there isn’t a difficulty setting it’s just a one time play game for me
Not for the price their asking 30$ sure but full 3A price no, hell 3A games are not even worth there price.
The main characters outfit looks awful. He looks like he belongs in 'The Village People'
So game is basically spellforce 1-2.
They game has a strong child-like feeling to it, maybe the target group is ~13 yrs?
Love the Game so far
Buy, don't listen to others, judge yourself. Everyone's view of game is subjective to what they like or feel is fun. You can see if its your taste or not within the refund period.
My view, once they polish up a few things will be best kings bounty yet. So much more immersive then, click click click into a dialog of text with buildings or characters. Being able to go inside these iconic in world places and speak with not only key characters but even people of this world, is FAR more immersive.
The rest of game is pretty much same, little changes in combat, which I also like, there is line of sight now and terrain affects combat, ahh so much better.
Is it perfect he'll no, they do need to polish up some models, some small bugs and more performance tweaks, but the foundation of tge changes are solid.
Thats common sense but your beimg objective not subjective lol
I'm about 4 hours in and it feels very weird. The fighting and combat is fun I like the way they did army management and that stuff but the third person aspect feels very rushed and very cheesey. The faces and animations are bad. I wish they just stuck with the traditional top down style. It would have been better.
Main character doesn't fight might be one of the dumbest decisions in video games ever
Looks like Arcania...
@4:24 🤣
Too overpriced for the quality we are receiving
you can sprint in Witcher 3
this looks pretty interesting!
It is not King's Bounty at all. Where is that fable/fairytale style :(
I think I saw an interview (in Russian) where devs basically said that they decided to make a Serious™ game for *Serious* ™ gamers (and console players)
@@Poctykwhich made it worse... The previous games were fun
I don't play tactical turn base battle games, only RTS from tactics... Oh, and XCom likes, but here TPP exploration with tactics looks like JRPG, which I also don't play. So I think it's skip for me.
Units are cheap, buy them in your reserve and they are free.
Samo tako najbolji si
does not matter what it is, but its a fact that this is NOT a kings bounty
yeah you hit the nail on the head. why change the formula.......i waited in anticipation for this garbage. i love the old gameplay, whoever decided to change it needs to be fired.
Short answer YES!!!
sadly the fights get really dull due to taunt, it s simply poorly implemented because it s aoe, so you taunt everyone for 3 turns, and hide that unit in 3 truns you have more than enough time to kill everyone
Very nice review, the game is cheap on steam but i know i will fall asleep on this one,if the combat was like in the witcher action i mite play otherwise i rather play Civ 5 or 6.
Great $30 title, I wouldn't pay 50 for it. I have 40 hours into it.
Ill pay $5 for it in a few months.
it worth but not for 50$
Makes you appreciate how well animated everything is in GTA 5.
Imo it's just a game much inferior to previous King's Bounty games and it should've been named something different. It doesn't even feel much like old King's Bounty
Much less like the OLD old King's Bounty from the 90s - the grandaddy of both Heroes and KB
The charm is gone, the humour seems gone...
Will likely not touch it, the only good thing about the came is combat
But i'll just start another scenario in Age of Wonders or something instead
i'm here with most god this game need sprinting
If you loved the HoMM/King's Bounty franchise this should be right up your alley. I wonder if the 3rd person cam attracted an audience looking for a different type of game. Or maybe it just sucks. Will watch more reviews I guess.
I'm playing through Skyrim SE for the first time with loads of mods. This game looks cool but I just I want the next Elder Scrolls single player open world rpg 😭.
Idk why but this reminds me of dragon age lmao
This game is not supposed to be a "3rd Person RPG" It is supposed to be a tactical 4X war game. It is trash. The people who made it don't have a clue what the game series is supposed to be.
I honestly don't like this rework, I always liked older King's Bounty versions but this one just feels off...
Like just for skyrim music.
