As a french person, it feels so weird to figure that many children in the USA have to do this every morning in school. It's definitely not something we would do in France, in my country it would almost feel "racist" to pledge allegiance to the French Flag. For instance I have never seen a french flag hanging on a window or a bedroom wall, as the americans can do with no problem. Again, it would feel racist and intolerant to expose your devotion to the french flag. I have no explanation for this, I suppose it is just a part of our social culture.
I always took pride in reciting the pledge of allegiance, I love the United States. I understand that this is different than many other western nations but many of my classmates chose not to stand and recite the pledge. This is there right and I do respect it. In my elementary school, everyone in my school stood up for the pledge AND sang the national anthem. They banned the national anthem in my old middle school before my older brother started middle school. My current school had the pledge my first year, but didn’t do the national anthem, the only time the Pledge of Allegiance was said was at graduation, followed by “America the Beautiful” the pledge of allegiance was immediately banned at the end of my first year there. If we bring it back, we’ll likely sing the English version of the Soviet Union National anthem.

It really depends on the school, but legally you don’t have to say it. I always just held my ground when teachers gave me shit when I’d sit through it in silence. (You’re expected to stand, I think put your hand over your heart and say it while facing the flag.) It made some teachers & students pretty upset, but others just didn’t care.

It really depends on the school, but legally you don’t have to say it. I always just held my ground when teachers gave me shit when I’d sit through it in silence. (You’re expected to stand, I think put your hand over your heart and say it while facing the flag.) It made some teachers & students pretty upset, but others just didn’t care.
