I an AmeriFINN. All of my family have the traditional Finnish sauna in their homes. I have been using the sauna my whole life regularly. I do appreciate your thorough assessment of it. Regardless of research, the cultural influence wins out for me. We are Finnish. We sauna. Then we jump in the snow! 😁

Having one in your home, as opposed to a shared facility, likely decreases these risks of skin infections

    • @wjs5773
      @wjs5773 5 лет назад +4

Do you think that the Finnish way-ie jumping in the snow after-may mitigate the risks also ? I haven’t heard that Finns have a higher incidence of these skin infections than other countries.

@@wjs5773 we rarely get to jump in the snow.;) Depends where you live, where the sauna is at, and if you prefer to freeze or not. I live in an apartment building in the South, and we don't own a summer cottage. It does snow here, but even when there would be enough to jump in, I'd just hit dog pee on the way to the asphalt. x) After having scared all my neighbors running naked through the hallway and down the stairs. Besides, I hate being cold. Just taking a shower after sauna is much more satisfying.;) And more traditional actually.
Jokes aside, I don't know if there would be enough data about Finns getting skin infections from jumping into snow, because it isn't as common as everyone likes to say. We love to boast with our freakish, exotic habits, even if we don't practice them in our everyday lives. Of course someone living in the countryside might regularly jump in the snow, up North they also get much more snow, and there's less pollution (because most of us live in cities).

I think it's important to pay attention to your sources. If more people were expected to provide sources when they are recommending things, i bet theyd be more careful. Ive completely minimalized my skincare since listening to you and im always wary of other youtubers who just read something and recommend vs u who show us researched studies. I appreciate that. You have no idea.

My stress level is so high all the time and listening to you makes me realize that I need to incorporate self care into my life as a priority. Thank you for all of your down to earth, practical advice and observations ❤️❤️

  • @elainelouve

I appreciate this video, but as a Finnish person with atopic exzema, I have to say the sauna is a part of washing oneself.;) We have shower immediately after being to the sauna, so I haven't noticed any difference in my skin. If I'm in a public sauna, like at the swimming pool, I wear flip flops. I also sit on a towel or similar protection, even at home (we have a sauna at home). We always go to sauna naked, so a towel under the butt will prevent germs or spreading them.
The point about bacteria is interesting, because traditionally the sauna was seen as a clean place, as it was where people washed themselves. Women went to give birth in a sauna, and likewise corpses were washed there. But this might originally be linked to the spiritual aspects I guess. Sauna was a holy place in the pagan religion.
I agree how nothing in this tradition proves the sauna to have any kinds of health benefits. It's just part of our culture, and like you said, a very relaxing experience. I've also been to a steam sauna (at a swimming pool), but lately it unfortunately seemed to affect my asthma, as in not being able to breath normally due to the steam. A dry sauna was better, doesn't stress out my lungs as much, though the heat in general isn't good for asthma.

Forget the sauna, I just take a hot shower it feels just as good as the sauna lol. I only do it once a week though, I don't want to impair my skin barrier too much.

I've been watching videos from this lady for years, ever since I developed adult acne. I have tried tons of different products that she has covered and all of them made my acne worse. She pushed random chemicals, citing their safety and all of them irritated my skin. I cut out dairy and gluten. I had a multi step morning and night routine. Spent hundreds on different treatments with no end in sight. BUT DAILY 20 MIN SAUNA WITH COLD SHOWER WAS THE ONLY THING THAT CLEARED MY SKIN. I had an acne purge for the first week with bumps I had been feeling for years under my skin come to surface. The redness I had from tretinoin, which I had not used in over a year, finally resolved and my skin started to feel as smooth as it was when I was in high school/college. SAUNA DONE THE RIGHT WAY IS BY FAR THE BEST NATURAL TREATMENT FOR YOUR SKIN.

For anyone interested in the health benefits of sauna use apart from relaxation, I would recommend checking out Dr. Rhonda Patrick's RUclips channel and podcast FoundMyFitness, where she interviewed Dr. Jari Laukkanen, who conducted a 20-year study on over 2000 Finnish men. This showed dose-dependent benefits in cardiovascular health and all-cause mortality with regular sauna use.

Dr Dray I love your videos!! I have a question and I would really appreciate it if you could answer it!!
I have been prescribed Duac gel, which is a acne-treatment that has 10mg clindamycin + 50mg benzoyl peroxide in 1gr of product, I use it every night.
Through your videos I have realized that some of the red marks on my face weren't acne, but probably post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Should I introduce vitamin C to my skincare routine? Or will the Duac gel actually help?
I have been using this product for 2 months already, also I'm on the pill, a variation specifically for acne with Dienogest. And I have seen no changes, I do breakout less, but my cheeks have the same acne marks.
I know I should ask a dermatologist but since every visit is so expensive I can't really afford going till a good three months... Sorry to bother you!!!

Hi Dr. Dray! Could you review the Cerave hydrating hylauronic acid serum? It’s a new product that I purchased yesterday; however, today I noticed that it has some type of alcohol (denat.?) . I’m not sure, but I thought alcohol dries out the skin and my skin is already dry due to the weather. I was thinking about returning it. It would be nice to have your feedback on this product. Thank you! 🤗

Great video. My grandmother had ‘fire legs and hot water bottle back’ many years ago from sitting in front of a coal fire with a water bottle wrapped to her back. Obviously no other heating source back then, I grew up in a coal mining community. Personally I have never enjoyed saunas as it feels like I can’t breathe. Seems I did myself a favour! Thanks Dr Dray 😊

My friend has a sauna in her apartment building and I was going to use it with her tonight! Again another super informative video and I will definitely not be using it 🙅🏻‍♀️ also considering I get eczema flare ups that most likely would not be good for that. What we would we do without dr dray!

Thank you for the video Dr. Dray, this is a topic I’ve always wondered about. I have two further suggestions for future videos. does it matter the type of washing detergent we use for our clothes in relation to how it may effect our skin (fragrance etc) and secondly can you review Paula’s Choice, many thanks and Happy new year to you x

As a student, during the winter I sat at my desk studying with my feet next to the heater for long periods of time and as a result developed dark veiny hyperpigmentation on my lower leg. I went to several doctors and they couldn't figure out what it was - I am sure it is erythema ab igne - I can't thank you enough Dr Dray

With dry skin, putting on jojoba-oil before showering helps for not losing more hydration. Could putting jojoba-oil on before a sauna also help or will this only clog the pores and maximise the sweating?

Dr. Dray- I have been "addicted" to chapstick (Burt's Bees) since middle school! I am now 25.... If I don't use it, within 24 hours my lips are very itchy, erythematous, and dry. A professor in college told our class that if you overuse lotion or chapstick, the skin loses its ability to protect itself from the elements / retain moisture without these protective barriers provided by chapstick and moisturizers, and encouraged us to not use these products so our skin can "adjust" to not be dependent on these products. What are your thoughts on this? And what do you think about breaking a chapstick "addiction?" Are there less occlusive methods to moisturize lips other than traditional chapstick such as vaseline, aquaphor, lanolin based products?

chapsticks like that are lousy and by and large lead to irritant dermatitis as a result of added fragrance...they feel nice at first because they are emollient, but in reality do nothing for the skin barrrier...this is why i use cerave healing ointment

Thanks Dr Dray, always enjoy your videos. What about those face steamers, fill with water, steam face for 10 minutes or so. I have one in my cart right now at Amazon, I've heard good things!!!

Holly W get a humidifier instead is my prediction of what she’d say haha. Steaming the face and exposing it to heat impairs the skin barrier + our pores do not open and close.

This is a little off topic but have started using Cerave in the tub for my daily moisturizer. While it feels good on my skin can you suggest another moisturizer that I can put on top of that? My skin does not feel supple and I like a more “moisturizing “ feel. I’m 62 and need as much moisture as I can get. Thank you and Happy New Year!

I will not take a sauna subscription in 2019. I once went to a sauna on a trip. I went out after two minutes, I had trouble breathing...lol. I agree with you that anxiety is not good for the skin. I know something about that. You made me laugh at the end of the video...who wants to invite me to a ski lodge after that...lol!

Returned to this video as I'm considering adding sauna visits to my self-care routine, they do so much for my mental well being. How would you try to mitigate the risks of infections and irritation of sauna use if you were to (for some reason lol, *imagines you hissing*) visit one, Dr Dray? 💕Aside from I presume: wearing slippers, washing off sweat. Should the duration be kept to a 10 min max, as with hot showers? How well do towels lessen the risk of infection? (I.e. sitting on them.) Hope you have a wonderful day. ✨🧖‍♀️

A male coworker told me that when people have had too much alcohol, he can smell it in the sauna. Also, this is an uncomfortable one, women on the first week of their cycle. I guess avoid saunas or hot yoga during those days if you want to be polite.

I 1000% disagree with this whole video. She is literally only person I have came across that’s states it’s not beneficial. There are literally hundreds of studies showing positives for sauna use.

I really appreciate your videos and your research. Normally you bring so many things that I can learn from, for example today I have learned about using saunas when you have skin issues. However other than that, I highly disagree with the rest of your research.
If you don’t have enough data on the health benefits from sauna, I highly recommend to check the studies made about prevention of cardiovascular disease, for example. They are not small studies at all like you said.
If you would like a bit more information about you can search for Rhonda Patrick Ph. D in biomedical or Jari Laukkanen M.D and Ph.D cardiologist. They are very knowledgeable about this topic.
    Thank you.

Spot on Dr. Dray. I wish I watched this before buying the infrared sauna. After having used it for 6 months, almost daily, for 40-60 minutes at a time, I found my skin and hair have aged drastically, with noticeable sagging, dryness and hyperpigmentation. Is there any way to treat such damages?

Dr. Dray, does the same go for facials? Is there any benefit to them besides the fact that I find them incredibly relaxing?
