    This version of Katherine Howard was also meant to reference how today's music scene over-sexualizes its girls from too-early ages, hence the choice of modeling her on Arianna and Britney. Also, I've seen several clips of the show, but my absolute FAVORITE has got to be the flash-mob at the Tower of London. It's the biggest middle finger to everything Henry put these women through, which is why it's so moving. (8/20/2021)

    The one spot that sends my pedant soul is Anne Boleyn’s lyric in the final song “now I’m writing lyrics for Shakesy P” since he wasn’t even alive when she was and even if she hadn’t died when she did, there’s no way she’d live long enough for that.

    • @ReadingthePast

      I was conflicted on that line too - I decided to give some benefit of the doubt because, as the queens seem to know about things that happen after them, Anne might be referring to Shakespeare’s “Henry VIII” or “All Is True” here. If that’s the case, it’s very funny because that play ends with the christening of Elizabeth… as if nothing else happens in Henry’s reign 🤣

    • @whaleymom76
      @whaleymom76 2 года назад +6

      True enough. However, there is a needed element of suspension of disbelief since the premise is that a group of six women, most of whom were dead before the others entered the scene, who are now forming a band together. So, yeah. 🙂

    • @SpringStarFangirl

      I always saw that line as being a reference to how Shakespeare wrote plays for Anne's daughter, Queen Elizabeth, who was known as a lover of theater.

    Katherine Howard’s song is the one that makes me bawl!
    Anne Boleyn has always had a special place in my heart so when I first heard her song I absolutely loathes it, but I think the actresses who play her have some much fun with it, that watching it is quite enjoyable!

      I agree on both parts. The shows portrayal of Anne Boleyn bothers me. She was incredibly intelligent and political. I loved the actress that played her, but her song was my least favorite.
      I sobbed during Katherine Howards song. The actress was amazing and did a great job of capturing traumatic response from sexual abuse.

    I've not seen it (the joys of living in Germany) but listened to the soundtrack as well as watching snippets that are available on YT. It's not perfect, f.e. Boleyn's song forces her into a sort of passive role (I.e. being played by her family as a puppet while being unaware) while also removing whatever political savvy she probably had.
    If I had to rewrite the musical, I would edit the Boleyn and Seymour parts to challenge how history rewrote their characters. Boleyn was smart and educated and madly in love, but didn't use her virginity to lure in Henry VIII. She also was more chaste than both the musical and "The Tudors" make her out to be. Seymour was smart and, I think, a more cunning sort than Boleyn, for she is the one "waiting in the wings" for her chance and catching Henry's eye. The show hints at sth hidden with the line " and you'll suddenly see more" but that merely seems to allude to the fact that she knew Henry only loved her for her son.
    In short, reducing Boleyn to a flirty schoolgirl and Seymour to a wise loving mother figure shows how Henry, and many scholars, perceive them but it doesn't reflect the other information that Dr Kat and other channels have presented about these women. It doesn't rewrite history.
    I hope the writers, as they seem to suggest, know of their own shortcomings and give us a sequel musical that improves on the themes and their execution. Until then, I'll listen to all these banger songs some more since it's quickly become my favourite musical around.

    I haven't seen the show, only heard the cast recording. I would like to see it performed, but the portrayal of Anne Boleyn bothers me. It's a personally frustrating situation for me too, because just as a song in its own right Don't Lose Ur Head is probably my favorite -- It's so infectious, and I love to sing it -- but I really hate that in this show that purports to reexamine the framing of these women...they've played up the stereotype of Anne as a status hungry gold digger and shallow partygirl. She was such a complex, intelligent, opinionated woman and I think Six missed big with their characterization of her.

      I’m so late to this comment I kinda took it as her playing the role they gave her though you can only really see it in the actual play she goes on this long spiel how about what they are doing is reinforcing what has been pushed on them then she is like yeah I read

    • @ButtonsCasey
      @ButtonsCasey 2 года назад +4

      Late to this, but remember the play is entertainment. There are other things that make no sense, like Catherine of Aragon not knowing who Henry VII's wife was. Or how they changed the relationship with Howard and Culpeper. Just like the Tudors, it's entertainment and not a historical documentary. You can also, if you haven't already, find both the original West End cast, or Broadway cast full performance on RUclips.

    • @shainahiggins2217
      @shainahiggins2217 2 года назад +5

      Yeah, I'm very aware it's entertainment. I don't expect a stage pop revue telling of the Six Wives to be a documentary. My issue is, again, that the whole thesis statement of this show is to reexamine the versions of these women as history has packed them for us, and to explore real and imagined facets not usually included in their narratives. And then Anne's song does the exact opposite. I would be interested in seeing it in the context of the entire show, but when the other wives get songs that are generally much more subversive it's frustrating to see Anne not accorded the same treatment.

    I am usually drawn to movies and musicals based on life events because of the real historical accounts I've read and which have sparked my interest and hunger for more info. That being said, like the very popular musical "Hamilton" here in the USA, I find that musicals often trivialize real history and invite speculative subjectivities that minimize the more impactful reasons why history unfolds the way it did. I enjoy them as entertainment but need to remind myself that they are not documentaries.

I don't think she believed me and probably thought I was a racist denier. :-( That being said, I think color blind casting in fiction and musicals is perfectly fine. Because it's fiction.

    "Six, The Musical", is my "Hamilton". I had the great privilege of seeing it just before all of the West End theatres shut down. As a female director who has a hard time finding shows, especially musicals, with multiple, strong female characters, "Six" is an extreme breath of power babe air. I also adore the all female band aspect. I plan to fight tooth and nail for the show when the regional rights become available.

    My problem with six is that they claim to try to tell their stories outside of Henry, but all of their songs seem to be Henry centred.
    No mention of Catherine of Aragon being a warrior queen, of Anne Boleyn being a Renaissance woman who loved politics and gave birth to the woman behind the golden age (heck, I’d take any mention of Elizabeth seeing as Henry’s other kids got a name drop), Anne of Cleves political savvy and support of Mary and Elizabeth throughout their lives, Katherine Howard being more than her child abuse, Katherine Parr’s acts of espionage and her complications later with the abuse of Elizabeth, etc.
    So much could have been explored outside of Henry’s marriage to them. They all had lives before Henry and they were all picked by Henry because they were intriguing women in their own right before him.
    I usually wouldn’t mind too much, but it’s because they keep trying to say they’re gonna live their lives without Henry and not have him be the influence on their story, so I was excited for their fresh new take. Alas, I didn’t get it.
    Also, as a diehard Anne Boleyn fan, her song made me really annoyed. She was really the one done the most injustice in the tracks (fine song but lyrically and narratively awful).

    I'm always in conflict about which Six song is my favorite, I'm usually stuck between Anne of Cleves and Katherine Parr, although Katherine Howard also makes the rounds. But I agree that Anne Boleyn's song is my least favorite. While it's a bop and they don't portray her as the typical scheming femme fatale, they instead went the extreme opposite of making her a dumbass with no brain- to- mouth filter. Anne Boleyn was actually a very intelligent and complex young woman which is what attracted Henry VIII to her in the 1st place. I really wish we got to see that hidden depth of hers in the show instead of what we got.

    I absolutely love your breakdown of all the songs, especially the one of Anne Boleyn's song. It made me realise why I always liked it the least. You said that the line "politics, not my thing" was the one that threw you off. I always had an issue with Anna of Cleve's line "I'm a Wiener schnitzel not an English flower" because as someone who lives near Kleve in Germany it just annoys me that they chose to go with the Austrian Wiener schnitzel. The two places are a thousand kilometres away from one another.

    We were lucky enough to see Six on it's second Edinburgh Fringe run in 2018. It had already been picked up for development into the West End show but we saw it in the upside down purple cow. It was absolutely electric and properly felt like a pop concert. I particularly loved the costumes, as you say, they straddle the eras brilliantly. I also loved that all the musicians were women too and hope that this is still the case. It is rare to hear people discussing history on leaving a musical but this one had obviously made people think. I would love to see it again & hopefully it'll tour the UK again and I'll be able to.

    I’m so glad you reviewed this! I haven’t had a chance to see it on stage yet (maybe when I feel safe travelling again, we’ll make it to Broadway), although I have seen a few clips, and I’ve been working through the songs off and on. For as catchy as it is, Anne Boleyn’s song does kinda bug me (still love singing it). However, I saw an interesting interpretation of it, based on the off-Broadway performance where Anne is more snarky and less airhead. The way they saw “Don’t Lose Your Head” is Anne being sarcastic about the way she’s portrayed, which is seen in that she’s often making remarks between other numbers that show she’s way smarter than she lets on, but still with that very “mean girl” vibe.
    The other thing that I kinda wished is that they centered Catherine Parr’s number when she’s playing the show straight on her political maneuvering to avoid gaining Henry’s wrath during the controversy around Anne Askew, as that would have more clearly played up the survivor angle. She died giving birth to Thomas Seymour’s kid, but more importantly, Thomas Seymour was kinda trash. “Don’t need your love” is at the bottom of my sing-through list because it just bugs me the amount that’s about Thomas Seymour.

    "Politics, not my thing" is comedic genius. That's why, on the soundtrack, you hear people laughing. As Anne is the one Queen I'll sing about, according to K Howard, I think the end of Catherine's song and the intro to Anne's "The one who chased the King, and paid the price with a swordsman's swing," is so true reading into Catherine's character. But, who has those lyrics just pop out?? I mean, to catch my heart and yours, it has to be spectacular. I'm an American, so there's no way I'll ever see it in person, but I have the soundtrack on, and tomorrow I'll hit replay!
    The line "we all disappear," made me cry. But, I really enjoy your take on Henry's wives making him famous, not as husband of the year, certainly. Sometime's it's hard o remember that these were real people. Especially for the next couple of days as I am writing this on May 17th. Yes, I have my "B" necklace on. I can not imagine the horror of knowing you would die this horrible way. Also, Henry married Jane 11 days after Anne died. I believe it may have been 11 days after she'd given birth that she died. It may be 12, but really? Shivers.
    I really enjoyed your take on all but a couple of things and you're probably more fof all the Queen's, rather than just Anne.

    I love Six and this review. Just one quibble Anne Boleyn at the end comes up with this feminist theory and then casually says 'yeah.....I read' which questions the interpretation as her as a air head earlier. I think it's more her as a party girl and possibly a status seeker but not all party girls are dumb or ignorant and Anne was well renowned for her wit and vivacity and also her bluntness, ruthless determination to get her own way, her 'whatever loser' attitude to criticism and her short fuse and think Six did capture that as well as the fact she was probably a flirt but not an adulteress.

    Katherine Parr's lyrics gave me goosebumps - Sold!! I'm gonna see Six if ever I can.

    despite two of my primary interests being musicals and the tudor dynasty it took me until last month to take the plunge into six after regretfully ignoring it for years, i have a hard time letting go of my pedantic ways and i was a little afraid that even if it was well produced in other areas the modernized historical aspect would bother me too much to enjoy the show if it wasn't executed well enough. i'm so glad that instinct was wrong and i absolutely adore it overall, i think the creator's six-point plan really shows they had good intentions iffy interpretations aside, i do wonder what it must be like to see the show as someone who doesn't have prior knowledge of these women and the events around them to make comparisons and also what the uninformed viewer's perspective would be on those points in relation to that.
    anyways i very much enjoyed your review and i kind of wish i had seen this video back when you uploaded it because my fears would have been allayed, but it is interesting to see in retrospect that we had pretty similar takeaways independently!

    Also, it's nice that Catherine Parr, who really got the short end of most sticks in her life, had her accomplishments celebrated in this musical.

    American, here. We caught the show on a cruise, in 2019. I have to say, we enjoyed it so much, we went to all four performances, throughout our week long trip! By the end, we had the songs memorized. 😁
    There was laughter, tears, and tomfoolery. I highly recommend Six, to anyone who wants to have a good time.

    I will say that I've been loving this show for months now. I agree with you on all of your points. Although I have to admit that I didn't catch that the ruffs were out of the time period. I just thought that maybe it was something they were wearing in Germany or Austria before it made it's way to England.
    If you ever want to come over and see the Broadway version... just let me know. I would love to go with you and I'm not that far from NYC. Anyway, it could be a fun night because I think the cast here is amazing. Well thanks for your channel and I hope you have a great week, k

    After listening to the soundtrack since it came out I finally got to see it a month ago (was supposed to see it last may but no prizes for guessing why that didn’t happen) I was not expecting to be full on sobbing in All You Wanna Do. It was always my favourite song before but the physicality was so shockingly emotional!

    Thanks for your really interesting review of Six, which I recently saw aboard the Norwegian Bliss. I especially loved your comments on Katherine Parr's song, which brought depth and meaning to the show. If the creators managed to achieve any of their stated goals, it would be in large part due to their treatment of Katherine Parr. I am a theatre professional, and I found your review to be insightful and educational. And like any good review, it inspires people to want to see the show for themselves. If you ever get bored with history, you should consider taking up film or theatre reviewing full time. Lord knows you're better at it than many who do it in the popular press!

    My best friend took me to see the musical as my Xmas gift in 2019. I was in love with the show. She knows how much I love British History and while the show is entertainment I couldn't stop rambling on before the show started about the history of the women and the Tudors. All the people around me were so fascinated at my giddiness and my fan girling off British History 🤣😂🤣😂 I listen to the soundtrack at least once a week still.

    I have not seen the musical, and I have to admit that my tolerance for how historical subjects are treated in media is fairly low. There is literally no reason why The Tudors could not have been more accurate but it just..... wasn't. That being said it did spark my interest in Tudor History so.... swings and roundabouts?
    Six looked gorgeous and this review was very interesting to me. And the bit at the end about Catherine Parr was AMAZING. I was nodding along and smiling as you described the song, and I LOVE IT. Perfection.
    Now, maybe I should go have a look. Thanks for that, Dr. Kat. And thank you for all of your videos. I hope you and your family are doing well. Cheers.

    Terrific episode! Seeing Six in NYC in February and now really can't wait! Couple thoughts: am reading a lot lately that proposed Jane Seymour was a lot more political than we had thought and was active participant in overthrowing Anne Boleyn. Just read Alison Weir's Katherine Parr and agree with Six's portrayal.

    I’ve always said that England is what it is today because of Catherine Parr. Anne of Cleaves too. Doing the work to bring Mary and Elizabeth back to to favor with Henry. And eventually to the throne.
    I absolutely agree with your thoughts on Anne Boleyn I think she is as very smart and ambitious. I think she was pushed by the men in her family but decided to take charge of her own destiny instead of letting them control her.

    I have been waiting for this. I personally am not a big fan of it but the songs are earworms that I listen to often. Personally the moments where it perpetuates myths are a bit annoying to me enough for it to bother me everytime I hear them but I understand the need to add entertainment value
