The idea is that a concave section under the nose guides more water directly under the board where it is concave. More water under the nose means more lift and stability for the purpose of noseriding. The necessity of a concave nose is up for debate among the surfing/shaping community but that's the general idea why you would want it.

nose riding. it helps so your nose doesn't get caught underwater and you flip over your board
