I'm 1200 and I got the solution. It's far from being out of anyone's depth. I don't know if I'd find it in a real time game though. I mean, it didn't really take me longer than I'd need in a 10 mind game, but chess puzzle logic is different than real situation logic. In chess puzzles I look for sacrifices and counterintuitive moves, which I don't as much in real games.
No matter how good you are there will always be people way better. The only reason to quit chess is if it isn't fun anymore. The astronomical complexity is what I love about chess even though I'm not very good at it.
Chess puzzles aren't the same as games and they tend to have "tricks" that show up a lot. Look for forced promotions, under-promotions and knight forks as they are common themes.
It's great how black's own pieces form walls pretending the king from stepping back to escape check. The mate in 5 is great, black would have to play kxf8 to get it in that beautiful checkmate but black can play 2... kd7 as you showed. That's really what black is supposed to play to prolong it but the checkmate isn't as beautiful.
03:15 -- I wish you explored more variations along this particular line of defence for Black... Because... The way *I* see it... It's not obvious HOW it's *"a draw" **_AT ALL_** ... O_o* Like... Maybe show a few more moves down the line ?? ...It's definitely *FAR from obvious* how these only 1-2 moves that you showed from the line _EVENTUALLY_ lead to A DRAW... !! :O .
I know what you mean, I had to make a decision there. It's pretty long lines actually and when I did a test video to show them all it added like 4-5 minutes to the video. I was afraid to lose many viewers by doing this so I settled for a quick version. I get some comments from time to time that I spend too much time on sidelines so as said, I made a decision to cut it down here.
Given it's not a zugzwang, the next thing to look for is sacrifices! I looked at Qf8+ first, but realised it doesn't work because the Black king can move to d7 rather than take the queen. After that I found the right line easily enough. Lovely puzzle! 👍👍
d7 is covered by your rook. The black king can't go there. I did the opposite of you: I first looked into Rd8! but gave up because I could only compute promoting the pawn right afterwards, which didn't work. For some reason I just dismissed everything that wasn't the pawn promotion under that scenario. Then I looked into Qf8! as a first move and the rest fell down in place.
I got this one, but with a slightly different order of movement: I sacced Qf8! to get the king away right at the start, and then only Rd8! on the second move. It's the same outcome.
@@ianallen738 yeah. To E7. Fucking hell it sure took me long enough to see it. I'm annoyed now. I even considered the actual solution before this one, and gave up on it for a stupid reason. I was just so close and yet so far.
At what level would a chess player actually see something like this in a chess tournament with a clock counting down? Thanks for the new insights. I may be improving on my NEGATIVE 2400 rating.
This moves are game like. Although nice for chessplayer - today it will get a commendation and no more. Because there are all forced moves. Even no single quite move. The study is simple and not very demanding from an artistic point of view. But it is more likely that such a study will not receive a distinction.
I guessed the first sacrifice, but didn't figure out the rest.
Excellent
This has convinced me that I just give up on chess. Forever out of my depth.... going back to Sudokus.....thanks.
Never give up

wow, a smothered mate
Hats off to you and your pawn.
Found the first move!😂
This looks like one of those "Sac everything! It might be checkmate!" puzzles. Hmmm. Yes. Now let's see if I had it right ... Yup!

Again an easy one.
It's a five moves combination
I found this one!
An excellent puzzle with sacrificial motif. White to move and mate in 5…
saw qf8 but only thought of it as a first move :(
I don't even feel bad about not getting this one. I considered the first move but then dismissed it because I didn't see the second move.
You could also start with the Queen sac, Qf8+
No you couldn't, sorry.

It's the same outcome.
The king can just walk out.
No he can't. Unless he can put himself in check, he can't. d7 is covered by the white rook.

Brilliant!
This must be easy because I saw the right combination almost immediately.
Didn't manage to get this one but I thought it was particularly beautiful
How about 1. Kg8 and Black can't stop 2. Qf8++.
@@JESL_Only_1 black plays Bd5 which gives the black king the square d7 to escape to.

Ethan might be the most beautiful soloution I ever saw 😂 sooo beautiful lol 😂
Queen e3 +
Castle d8 +...
Black Be4.
what about Kg8

Why not Kb1?
1)Rd8ch---RxR;Qf8ch----Kxf8; cdQch---Be8; Qd6ch---Qe7; Qh6ch#
Qe3+
I got to the Qd6 "solution" and then realised there were going to have to be sacrifices. So, I just watched.
