    This is one of those puzzles that's more about understanding the themes rather than just pure calculation.

      Yep, I agree. Just learning the simple trick of keeping my king on the correct colour squares so that it can't be checked will improve my game enormously!

    So, in summary, the strategy is to keep black's pieces up against the wall and keep the rooks mutually supporting until you have a position that lets you checkmate or take the queen with the loss of only one rook.

    difficult puzzle. Solution is to push queen farther queenside, for example to Qb8, then check king until king is on Kf8, then check king Rh8+ and then when king takes second rook Kxg7, white takes queen Rxb8. Quite difficult puzzle, took long time and many attempts to solve it

  • @viswakumarr

    It is very easy. Check with the rook. Black king forced to move to g8. Take the other rook to e7.
    The black queen can move within the 8th row only. 2nd rook to g7 check. King forced to move to f8.
    Rook h8 check.

    • @samirjafri191
      @samirjafri191 Месяц назад

      Very nice. I immediately identified e7 as the key, but the initial check from h7 is the key first step for both your solution and the content creator's. Quite a few of his puzzles seem to focus on subtle tempo changes. I need to learn how to better see these opportunities in my game.

    • @DSW_314

      Your answer missed a possibility. After Rh7+ Kg8 Re7, the Queen doesn't need to stay on the 8th Rank. Black can play Qf6, Qf5, Qf4. White doesn't threaten checkmate, because if Re8+ then K×Rh7. So the Black Queen would be escaped, and the game would lead to a draw. That's why the solution in the video keeps the White Rooks away from the Black King, to keep the checkmate threat, which keeps the Black Queen on the 8th Rank.

      With white king on b8 Black gives check from e5. If the left-side rook blocks b5+ is a perpetual. If the right-side rook blocks it's pinned while blocking the other rook and white can do nothing.

    Hmmm, stopped at min 0:58 and quickly thought of (not totally sure if it could be stopped though). Rook to B6. Black King only has one possible move, but the Queen will probably be moved. I don't think it makes a difference where so far, but Queen moves somewhere. Same rook white to C6, keeping the rooks protecting each other on that side of the board. What can the Queen do now? Does it matter? Queen or King black moves, and rook on C7 moves to C8. I have not developed from there, but i can keep the King in check or take the Queen after losing one rook. Now i will continue, and probably learn something. :)

  • @57thorns

    The long variation that ends at 8:50.
    Why can't black just play Qg8?

    • @57thorns
      @57thorns 8 дней назад

      Now I saw it:
      Make a king move for tempo, force the queen to move again and no matter what black does white can force an exchange with a rook for the queen.

    Maybe Rinck was the first, who discovered this position. But certainly this position is easy to find (also without computer help), and many study composer after Rinck have made with this position a study. Also Gurgenidze and Gerhard Josten. Happy, happy birthday. It is rare that 2 persons have the same birthday and are together.

    It is not possible to checkmate a lone king with one rook and your king? I think if you got the king in a corner (like h8), with your king on h6, you can checkmate with the rook on the 8 file on any safe square from a8 to f8.

    • @rogergeyer9851
      @rogergeyer9851 25 дней назад

      Yes, it is possible, and in fact EASY for a decent player. And the WHOLE puzzle largely revolves around FORCING him to lose a Q for a R, and then you have the win.
      Did you watch the video where he REPEATEDLY goes into that? All the threats are either winning Q for a R or checkmate, and all the defense is preventing checks and getting his Q to the center.

    It's been probably 20 years since I've played a game of chess. I did okay against the casual players, but I got my butt kicked online.
    My strategy for this would be a Queen Rook swap, anywhere I could. As long as you keep his King from being in play.
    And White's 2 Rooks are protecting each other. I'd take a swap any day. I don't understand why he says if you let the black Queen to the middle, it's gonna end up as a draw. He can check me all he wants. I don't even care if it ends up in a fork as long as it comes out, a Queen Rook swap.
    And I would keep moving my king closer to my rooks. For a third level of protection.

    • @rogergeyer9851
      @rogergeyer9851 25 дней назад

      As he said, with the Q in the middle, it is perpetual check. That means he can check you FOREVER, whether you block with rooks or not. 50 move rule says 50 checks and it's a draw.
      So THAT's the problem with the Q in the middle, which is why the whole puzzle mostly is about preventing that or Q checks to allow that.

  • @pranav21047
    @pranav21047 2 месяца назад

    I had a different thought.
    What if I let the queen check me. I will move my king slowly towards A8. After that I will use my 2 rooks to block the check and move my 2 rooks & king towards h file.
    So at the end black has to sacrifice his queen for my 1 rook.

    • @rogergeyer9851
      @rogergeyer9851 25 дней назад

      As he said, once the Q is in the middle it is PERPETUAL CHECK. I don't know why so many refuse to listen to or grasp that.

    • @patclark6032
      @patclark6032 2 месяца назад +1

      Moving white king to a7? Thought that might be simpler, but I couldn't keep the king out of check and the rook unpinned to allow winning the queen. Seems like a lot of maneuvering to win that as well. Do you have a sequence for that?

    • @debg1424
      @debg1424 2 месяца назад +1

      @@patclark6032 yes a7 and then b8 if queen is giving more checks. Once the king is in b8 then that's it.

      @patclark6032 2 месяца назад +2

      @@debg1424 I'm still learning. When the king was at b8 queen can't check, but can pin the rook, Q to f4. Seems like then either you have to move the left rook, or you have to move the king to a8 or c8 where the queen can check again.

    • @patclark6032
      @patclark6032 2 месяца назад +2

      @@debg1424 think walking the king down via c8 through checks towards blacks king and bringing the left rook down to the third rank eventually gave me black's queen. Still seemed to be almost as complex as the rook gyrations the author did.

      @debg1424 2 месяца назад

      @@patclark6032 king won't go to through c8. King will eventually go to b8 and then rook will go to c8. That will either checkmate or pin the queen.
