Diaper Rash Dos & Don’ts

  • Very few, if any, children make it out of diapers without this irritating problem: diaper rash. It can range from uncomfortable to painful.
“One in four children actually see a pediatrician or a physician for that problem, usually between the ages of zero and three years of age,” says Dr. Anthony Pietroniro, who is a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System.
Diaper rash is caused by the skin being exposed to moisture for long periods. In most cases it clears up in 2 or 3 days. When it comes to treatments; there are dos and don’ts that can make a difference to your bottom line.
First the don’ts: don’t be fooled by ultra-absorbent diapers. Although they do pull moisture away from the skin, they still need to be changed frequently.
“When a baby’s diaper is getting wet and heavy it’s definitely time to change it. Try not to let the baby’s skin be in contact with urine or with stool,” says Dr. Pietroniro.
And don’t over use baby powder and wipes. What you think may be soothing, could actually be irritating.
“I, as a pediatrician, discourage using powders or cornstarch for preventing or treating diaper rash because that can be inhaled into the lungs. When changing a diaper it’s best not to use the wipes that you can buy in the store. What works really nicely is just warm water and a soft towel. And it’s best to blot-dry the skin and not to rub the skin,” says Dr. Pietroniro.
Now the dos: proper over-the-counter products can provide protection for your baby’s bum.
“If the area is becoming really red, inflamed - apply an ointment that contains zinc oxide or even petroleum jelly because that creates a barrier to prevent the skin from getting further irritated,” says Dr. Pietroniro.
And do let your baby go au natural- nothing is better for diaper rash than fresh air.
“When the baby is napping lay the baby on a towel and take the diaper off so that the bottom can air out,” says Dr. Pietroniro.
Finally, treat diaper rash with the same care you give your baby- a little TLC goes a long way.

I don't need to see this video to know that. I was 14 years old, got first job as babysitter for 7 months baby. No experience at all. My first day babysitting and the baby was screaming of pain, her buts was live red meat. You just have to wash gently, dry gently without rubbing and let the baby naked for soothing. Anything that touches the rash it causes so much pain and does not get cured. the parents were very sloppy. The parents loved me, they were always bragging about me in the entire neighborwood.

When I say naked, I meant to say just the rash area exposed for fresh air to sooth.

As a dad who just got fire-hosed by my son WHILE changing his diaper, I'm gonna have to pass on the whole au natural thing. While a shower is cheap, upholstery steaming is not.

How to avoid diaper rash in your newborn:
If your baby is exhibiting signs of diaper rash, there are a few things you can do to help avoid it. Here are a few tips:
    1. Keep them clean: Diaper rashes are often caused by bacteria that build up on the skin during curation. Make sure your newborn is kept clean and free of dirt, dried sweat, and other irritants by changing their clothes regularly and putting them in the dryer when needed.
    2. Use a mild soap: Soap can help remove any bacteria that may have built up on the skin, but it’s also essential to use mild soap to prevent irritation. If the rash is becoming severe or chronic, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice on using an over-the-counter medication to treat it.
    3. Avoid over-the-counter medications: Although some medicines can cause rash, it’s not the best idea to use them without talking to your doctor first. These include antacids, aspirin, and other aluminum and chlorine drugs. read more:babiessounds.com/diaper-rash-in-newborns/
