- Refreshing a vintage Tanifuji silver steel straight razor with the best Jnat I own! (With subtitles)
I’ve been asked many times about my personal collection of Jnats. My “collection” consists in a single stone, a Nakayama Maruka Mizu Asagi. Previously to this one I had a collection of 18 other Jnats selected by beauty, mine and performance. Nice stones, but none of them would equal the fineness of this Nakayama Maruka. So I sold them all. A single stone is enough to finish my razors for this lifetime.
It’s a very hard stone, strong cutting power and the highest level of fineness a Jnat can reach. As a tomo I use a piece cut from a stone with similar characteristics. Together they match perfectly and put a dream edge on any razor.
Beautiful honing video, the hanging hair test was sublime, as silent ! Well done 👏 thank you .
Thank you very much Martin! 🙏🏻
I can only dream of a stone like that. I owned a very fine Oozuku that gave incredible edges, but it was lost in a move and the jnats I bought afterwards were not nearly as fine. 8k naniwa + Crox keeps me happy enough until I manage to stumble on another jnat that's worth it. Unfortunately ones as good as the Nakayama in your video are incredibly rare or insanely expensive.
You’re a great my friend 👏🏻🔝
Thank you very much Emmanuelle!
thanks
You're welcome!
The knive can cut Wolverine's beard....
Nice razor and gears here 😎👍💈
Thank you very much! 😊🙏🏻
Seems to be a good HHT test 😜😜 Great stone and great skills!!
Thank you Carlo! 🙏🏻
That hht is fantastic. :)
Just like the shave! ☺️
I like your honing videos a lot and the JNAT as well, is it on sale? By the way, could you make a honing video using full Naniwa super stones progression? Do you normally put tape on the spine of razors when honing? Do you recommend using it? Congratulations for your videos, they are very relaxing and helpful.
Hello Felix,
This is my personal Jnat. The one and only: instagram.com/p/CjzxAiKpN4P/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
A full honing process is a good idea, but not sure if I can do it this year. I’ll definitely put it on my to do list 👍🏻
Normally I don’t use tape, except in some very rare cases where I have to remove a chip or the customer let me know in advance. To refresh the razor or when honing a NOS for the first time the wear is barely visible.
Using tape is a personal preference. If you want to use it, then I recommend to use Kapton tape. It’s more resistant at wear than electric tape and very thin, does not affect the angle of the edge.
Thank you very much! I’m glad that you’re finding my work helpful! 🙏🏻
I would be curious to see how fine the scratch pattern is under a microscope!
I should make a video one day 👍🏻
Here it is: Nakayama Maruka 5+++ edge and scratch pattern under microscope (4K Full screen)

Beautiful Nakayama Maruka and Tomo Flo. Truly enjoy your honing videos and great to your best stone in action!
Is the Tomo also a Nakayama Maruka?
Thank you Darcy! I’m glad that you like them!
The stone from which I cut this tomo didn’t had any visible stamps at the time.
It was an impressive piece. The shape was irregular, but the fineness, cutting power, hardness, feedback, color, everything was perfect.
Do you have any stone like this available?😊
I do not have it right now unfortunately!
Do you use other stones before this finisher? When would you need to use something less fine / hard?
Hello Alan,
I use an artificial progression ending with the Jnat as a final finisher.
After that I only need the Jnat and a diamond plate to refresh the edge when the shave becomes uncomfortable.
I only go to lower grits if I chip the blade and need to remove significant amounts of steel.
You only use leather to strop and no canvas?
Yes, leather only.
What do you use to clean the strop?
