      @@vinny7114 I’ve heard that adding chapters to videos can sometimes negatively impact watch time, though I’m not sure how true that is in this case. It’s possible that Simon and his team are aware of this and prefer to keep things as they are to maximize engagement. On the other hand, they might just have other priorities or didn’t feel it was necessary for this particular video. Who knows? Sometimes, we might overthink these things, and the decision could be as simple as that. (btw I am just replying to your comment, not in a negative reply way).

    Some major assessment errors need to be pointed out: 1) Akhmetov is merely a nominal Muslim, not a practicing, he has zero reputation among country’s Muslim community and he’s not perceived as a Muslim by Ukrainian public, rather as a criminal legalising his business 2) Akhmetov’s workers in Mariupol had nothing to do with bringing the city back to order. It was solely the bravery of AFU 3) His personal decision to invest in institutionalisation of pro Russian political movement in the East of Ukraine is the biggest reason for Russia’s readiness to attempt military occupation of the region. How can he be called a supporter of Ukraine? 4) Zelensky did not run on anti-oligarch agenda in 2019, he became prominent solely due to another Oligarch’s media support for the campaign 5) There’s still no evidence for who exactly financially supported AZOV in 2014. I’m not saying it wasn’t Akhmetov, but there’s zero evidence leading to any name.

      I'm genuinely curious
      1. if so, why does he remain Muslim?
      2. by Simon's description, thousands of workers flooded Mariupol, surely they had some impact?
      3. he erred it seems, no? He is now pro-Ukrainian, obviously to protect his wealth and power and as retribution to the seizing of his assets by Russia. Nothing short of Ukraine reclaiming the annexed regions would suffice for him.
      4. I think Simon mentioned an "anti-corruption" campaign, but I must have missed the "anti-oligarch" detail.
      5. true

      @romanhromyk3524 4 месяца назад +1

      @@LA-qv1ir Good questions. 1) His childhood and teen years were spent in a non-religious Soviet culture of Donetsk region, filled with poverty, street violence and crime. No, his parents were not taking him to a Mosque every now and then. When he became wealthy he indeed sponsored a construction of a Mosque as the tribute to both his ethnic origin and a personal tribute to Akhat Bragin, a criminal responsible for assaults and robbery. So that’s why neither other Muslims in Ukraine nor non-Muslim Ukrainians ever considered him a Muslim. 2) They might have organised a honking demonstration but honking cars wouldn’t force the well armed terrorists out of the city. Ukrainian Army in armorers vehicles did. Akhmetov might find himself in a relatively favourable position even if Donetsk region isn’t returned to UA Government control. He still gave plenty of economic leverage to be going well. As he gets older , his primary goal is more and more simply retaining wealth and being safe from investigations of how his original wealth was accumulated. Same is true for other oligarchs.

    2:44 In Brazil, the city of Prudentópolis, with around 75% of its population made of Ukrainians and decendents of Ukrainians, has Ukrainian not as a 'second' official language - because that would mean Portuguese is the first - but as a co-official language. All official documents are published in both Ukrainian and Portuguese. Do we care? No! ... well ... we actually do care because, after all, it's awesome!
    Almost everybody in Ukraine speak both languages - some have more command of Ukrainian and some of Russian - so why not have both languages?

    One the major problems about billionaires, aside the obvious ones, is that they are so far removed from the country and people and internationally diversified, that they do not care what happens to them anymore. Akhmetov seems to be the best kind of oligarch. One whose fate is inextricably linked to the prosperity of his people and country. Other countries should learn from this and try to tie down their own super rich or risk getting stabbed in the back.

    huh. It’s funny how it sounds like this is a man who loves his homeland, takes care of his people, is a true patriot, even built his billions of dollars worth of assets from the ground up solely within the borders of his homeland to help give Ukraine an actual standing/growing economy after the devastation of the Soviet Union collapse, is literally ensuring that his people aren’t freezing to death during the winter by building & distributing FREE electricity to his people during an active conflict, has watched his net worth plummet lower and lower after standing up to a foreign invasion that would’ve only benefited him if he stood with Russia and yet he’s still spending his personal money on getting food packages to the Ukrainian people (not to mention all the other philanthropy work), etc.
    and yet Zelensky; the guy who’s actually the one still sitting in office long overdue elections and truthfully hasn’t done much other than entrench himself into a position of undisputed power (and even making military decisions such as retiring the former highly qualified, successful, and popular chief of the military when he politically challenged Zelensky) , and nonstop begging all of NATO for literally free money and advanced military equipment just to actually have the cahonies to get on a stage afterwards and whine about those countries not letting him suck harder off their teets; is actually trying to also spend his countries strained resources on trying to make the guy who’s done more for the Ukrainian people than himself, out as being a corrupt Russian traitor and dangerous “Oligarch”. And for some reason, no one seems to notice how obviously corrupt Zelensky is when he’s sitting there obliviously eliminating all his political rivals & god knows what else all while the west nonstop paints him as the golden uncorrupted face of Ukraine & their spirit to fight. Personally, I think Zelensky himself might be one of Ukraines biggest threats other than Russia.

    This an interesting video, Simon - I had never heard of Akhmetov. I found some imprecisions and I commented about them. The most important - the one that deserves a correction - is the claim that Ukraine supported the US in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. That is wrong and puts Ukraine under a very undeserving light. The other observations I made are meaningless compared to that one because the 2003 invasion of Iraq is the event that did the most damage to world stability - and is still causing death an war like, for instance, the invation of Ukraine.
    Neither the government nor the people of Ukraine supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

    Is it kind of like you would call an olegark someone at stage 2 of the bourgeoisie structure. Like there are magnates that supply the raw materials, olegarks who process the raw materials into more usable forms, and capitalists that take the processed materials and turn them into consumer products? Or is the term more a regional thing to describe a person who owns means of production and and describe alignment with a certain political affiliation.

    Akhmetov surely shows signs of faith in humanity. Perhaps he “played the game” at the beginning of his career but he has consistently demonstrated loyalty to those who worked for him. More importantly he puts his money in Ukraine. Is this a “plan”? He takes the risks, does he seek reward? Perhaps he hears a higher power, billions mean nothing unless put to constructive end. Let time judge this man, he shows remarkable selflessness and willingness to spend his money on others. How many billionaires have given this much of their wealth in their life time? Again, he may be a man of true faith, let his actions judge him.
