Cheryl was an odd bird when she came out. To her fans, her record company, and FM radio. No one could figure out what category to put her in. Got played on country, rock, alternative and easy listening stations in time, but in the beginning they didn't want to touch her because she sounded soooo different. Truth is she had been in the business for a while. She played guitar and bass and sang backups for some pretty heavy hitting stars, in the studio and live. And once she got on the road as an opening act for some of those big names, folks started requesting her music from all those radio genres and she took off. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing her music. In the car, the mall, and even in Dr's offices. May not have been the same song because different stations picked songs that fit in their format, but that's a good thing. Across the genres she had many top 10 hits, in many different categories, and sold an a$$ load of CD's.

She also has often performed with Stevie Nicks, including the song "Sorcerer"
After Christine McVie retired from Fleetwood Mac (she came back many years later), Sheryl came very close at one point to joining that band.

Sheryl Crow's debut album "Tuesday Night Music Club" was a huge success and put a lot of pressure on her for her next effort. Many musicians crash and burn on their sophomore effort. This song was one a friend wrote after a break-up, and Sheryl added a verse about why wasn't she happier with her success. It was meant to be a country song but turned out like this - definite Tom Petty influence, and both she and producer Jeff Trott have called it "country a la The Rolling Stones". They also did "My Favorite Mistake", "Every Day is a Winding Road", and "Soak Up the Sun" together.

This is off her 2nd album and the whole thing is fire. On the cut, Love is a Good Thing, after the breakdown she does an electrifying scream (3:30) and it gets me every time. She is well worth digging deep into her library.

I heard you say you thought Sheryl Crow was a country singer-I agree, she certainly is. Even though they tried to hide that in the days of ‘90s pop and alternative, they never fooled me. She’s country to the core.
By the way, you should do “Strong Enough.”

Sheryl has so many great songs. If you haven't already, react to "My favorite Mistake", "Strong Enough", and she does a great version of " First Cut is the Deepest" a song written by Cat Stevens in 1967.

Rob Robertson mentioned below the R&R HOF induction for Linda Ronstadt "When Linda Ronstadt...They had a super group up on stage doing her songs. Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and Carrie Underwood." That's a good jumping off point, do songs from each of those ladies for Female Friday...but especially Bonnie Raitt (I love her songs and guitar playing): "Have A Heart" "Nick of Time" the live version of "I Can't Find My Way Home" (1972) all good down home Blues Rock.

Joan Osborne "One of Us" should be looked into. Also making another pitch for Haley Reinhart singing "Creep" with Post Modern Jukebox. You may hear that crack in her voice like Sheryl and Alanis.

Check out her 2019 album Threads, which Sheryl claimed would be her last... Includes collaborations with many of her musical influences and friends: Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Walsh, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, and many more. Also a posthumous duet with Johnny Cash. Fantastic collection!

Sheryl Crowe is a powerhouse. It's true that she appealed to both pop/ rock and country audiences, so it's hard to nail her down to one genre. Lot's more to explore from her. Trivia: she was a backup singer for Michael Jackson. Please check out "Soak up the Sun", "Every Day is a Winding Road", "First Cut is the Deepest".

What I like most about her is that she is one of those true stories of hard work paying off. She's just a winner. She was all-state in track, FFA, national honor society, earned a BS and just grinded out singing gigs until something stuck. She's sold over 50 million records. I think she was in her 30s when her first single dropped. She didn't get lucky, she just never quit.

“Leaving Las Vegas” was the song that did it for me originally. It really paints a picture. I’ll toss out “Steve McQueen” as another favorite … the song (and the actor).
