Can you imagine contestants being given a carton of cigarettes for just being on a game show this day and age? Lol. There would be so much backlash but in the 50's smoking was glorified as you can see here. Amazing how much has changed the last 70 years.
Truman had given an angry speech defending his conduct in regards his handling the matter of a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in his administration, Harry Dexter White, who it turned out was part of a Soviet espionage ring (White died in 1948 after the accusations first surfaced. They have since been confirmed). Eisenhower's Attorney General, Herbert Brownell had earlier blasted Truman for hiring White when there were already warnings and rumors about White being part of an espionage ring.
