I don’t even read the title of the videos anymore, all of them are brilliant with Kevin Hicks storytelling skills
Gosh, thanks Jessie 👍🏻
You, dear sir, are a fantastic storyteller!
Cheers Jenn 👍🏻
Yes he is. Kevin is an international treasure.
He really is!
💯 %
You're a great teacher, Mr. Hicks. Your knowledge of historical topics and your way of explaining them are outstanding. I'm also learning much from your clear and proper pronounciation (english is my 2nd language). Thank you, very much, for sharing your wisdom with us. Cheers from the "Grafschaft Ysenburg-Büdingen" ("Die Wetterau" today) in Germany!
Thank you very much!!
I wish you'd been my history teacher. I love your clear and concise enunciation. Something sadly lacking in some people who mumble these days.
It's always a good day when we get to learn something new from the Master Storyteller!
Exactly what I need, 3 episodes of the history squad to catch up on after going through possibly the most traumatic few days of my life. Thanks, I'm looking forward to these ❤
Sorry to hear you've had a bad time of it. I hope you're okay and appreciate your watching. All the best 👍🏻
Aw. 🙁 I hope things are going better. Yes, certain great RUclips videos, like by @@thehistorysquad, do help! 🙂 Great storytelling accompanied by edited-in pictures/graphics make for an informative & exciting time.
I do remember Matt Easton, from Schola Gladiatoria channel, mentioning a few times that fencing schools were quite a source of trouble in the 13th century London, so much so that they eventualy got banned from the town and its surroundings
So, in the 1200s. I wonder if it was the same in the 1300s which this map represents?
Another great history lesson Kevin, it’s Kev of Rockingham here! I’m glad that the type of murder hasn’t changed that much in the years since the medieval times, who knows what could happen with the technology we have nowadays. 👍🏻
Cheers Kev, you have a lovely castle at Rockingham I believe but it doesn't look as though they allow videography, so no touring there for us sadly 👍🏻
As much as I wanted to hear about The London Beer Flood, this history is always so interesting. Crime and punishment throughout the centuries is always interesting in how just many things stay the same as many things change. For example, I remember hearing about a man in recent years who thwarted a purse snatching and was honored by the local sheriff for answer the hue and cry like the citizens did in the first case, a practice that goes all the way back to the Anglo-Saxons. And for the fun fact of this one for me, baddie Ralf there was arrested on my birthday, the 18th of October 😂
The London Beer Flood killed 8 people but there is no true that one of them climbed out three times to relieve himself.
Oh, a nice coincidence there Jodie 👍🏻
We might put the London Beer Flood up again sometime, maybe a 'second chance September' choice of topics that didn't quite make it 😉
It's honestly a shame how incomplete some of these records are. It's interesting to see the day to day proceedings of the past and see what has adapted since then and what hasn't.
I could listen to these sort of stories all day! Its also refreshing to see more mundane matters of this era rather than the major events all the time.
You are such an amazing story teller. I wonder if you could research medieval crime reports, that's if anything like that exists? It would be easier for you having been a policeman. Anyway, thanks again for all your hard work 🥰
Thanks Nancy, it is something I'm interested in, but I love all history and my list of topics is already so long, but who knows, maybe 👍🏻
Good request 👏
Shakespeare couldn't tell it better.Sent shudders down me spine when Kevin explains how far the long blade was plunged down into the body.Did they have stainless steel in those days?
I believe it was tempered, carbonised steel in those days, someone please correctl me if I'm wrong. 👍🏻
Gotta love a place called "Cheapside", love the video Kevin, and the digs.
Nobility carried swords, gentry carried long daggers, but almost everygody, to last kitchen maid, had utility knife with blade of perhaps 4". Which is just enough if it hits some organ.
Thanks, I’m obsessed with this map now!
Murder & Mayhem Mondays? A series looking at medieval murders, because there are so many fascinating cases from history.
A neat idea Joshy 👍🏻
Not only you keep me fascinated with your stories but, as a non native English speaker, I love learning those idioms you use.. to have it on one’s toes.. isn’t that a nice one…. Thank you Kevin.
Haha, thanks Jose!
Great presentation! You have a knack to bring life to the stories you tell.
As bad as London was, bear in mind Oxford was far worse.
Kevin, as a “civilized” race, we grouped into settlements around 6,000 BC. Sure, there were other settlements before then, but I’m talking as a student of anthropology. So 6,000 BC = civilization. Only 8,000 years separates us from those hunter gatherers who had a rethink. Eight thousand years is a blink in time.
Look where we’ve gone in that time: from the Lithic times to the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. From walking to riding horses to flying in metal tubes. Writing, advanced music and poetry, medicine... Today, we seem aliens from space compared to our ancestors eight thousand years ago.
To sum it up: we created, discovered and advanced, but as a race, we humans have not matured much. Eight thousand years is nothing in the advancement of a species.
Yes, underneath the veneer of civilization, we are still brutal beasts. Every day shows us that. But, unlike other species, we are trying to rise above what we were. And that makes us special.
Again, superb show!
Cheers!
What a super comment Allen, thanks for that! Something to ponder for sure. 👍🏻
So true. Even now we have Ukraine,Sudan etc.
Dear Kevin,
I would love to see you make a video on the battle of Aljubarrota. This battle fought on the 14 of August 1385 and was crucial to stop Spanish claims on the Portuguese crown and was a massive victory for the Anglo-Portuguese side against the Franco-Spanish invaders. Besides the main Portuguese force It saw the the participation of several hundred veteran English longbowmen that also fought in the Hundred Years’ War. This later resulted in the treaty of Windsor in 1386 which still stands today and sealed the Anglo-Portuguese alliance.
As a proud Portuguese myself it would be an honour to hear you speak about this topic.
As always, love your content and keep doing this amazing work!
Thanks Manual, yes I'm well aware of the treaty but didn't know about the battle so thank you for bringing it to my attention, I will certainly take a look 👍🏻
As an American who recently moved to Portugal with my Portuguese wife, I can say there is bad blood seen against the Spanish among many older Portuguese. Maybe this historical battle is some of the original impetus.
You make history such fun thank you
Thanks Kevin great film. As a former policeman you appreciate the supposed lawlessness of those times. It’s interesting to note what the coroners reports were. I think Habeas Corpus had already been introduced by then by King John under pressure from the the Robber Barons. I don’t think a jury system had been introduced but travelling magistrates administered the law based on witness statements. The more attestations of your good character could be produced the more likely you would be acquitted. Not sure if presumption of innocence until proven guilty had been established but bail and paying off fines to stay out prison was commonplace. Society may not have changed much but the practice of law and accountability have become central to a judiciary that has become increasingly complicated for judgement to be obtained. Trial by TV is now the norm. Modern day pantheons dominate and cameras in courts as well as celebrity judges shine a light into all kinds of wickedness and deviancy.
Such a good and true comment, thanks David 👍🏻
Great video again Kevin! So informative once again, I will hopefully become a patron soon as your content is top class 👍 much love from sunny Cumbria ✌️👍
Wow, thanks Alex! You're in a lovely part of the world 👍🏻
Greetings once again from nova Scotia, thank you good sir, I do so love history, and you are really great at bringing it to life. Be safe, and please keep the good stuff coming, best regards, Arthur
Will do Arthur, thanks as always 👍🏻
What I did not expect is how well organised they were back then. Movies always give you the impression that killing in those times would go pretty much unnoticed and that murderers would rarely be caught. I suppose that it was harder to catch some without the tools we have today but they where indeed quite good at recording the accounts of those they did.
Great video Kevin!! Your passion is addictive!! I'm still waiting anxiously for your story of Robin Hood or everything you know about the person known or could have been Robin Hood or Robin of the Hood!! Sooo much speculation but not much fact out there. I'm sure you would do a great video!!
Dave.
Cheers Dave. Old Robin is still on my radar, we did try once to shoot something but it just didn't cut it, it's so confusing all the players so I need to go back to the drawing board........maybe get my bit of floral oasis out with the sticks/people on it. 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad OK Kev, I'm sure whatever you do will be great as usual!!
Dave.
I haven't even watched one minute of the Video and already had to give Kevin a Like for his Mastery of Storytelling ❤😂
Wow, thanks Julian 👍🏻
This chap really is a pleasure to listen to......thanks for your efforts, I'm really enjoying your channel and videos please do keep them coming 👏👏👏
Thanks Joyce, will do. 👍🏻
Glad you covered this in the end, Kevin. I emailed you about it a good few months ago 😊
No worries! You wouldn't believe how long my list of topics is, history is infinite, but your suggestion was too fascinating to pass up and our Patreons thought so too. Thanks! 👍🏻
My sincere compliments for your spoken English pronunciation. In general, as an educated Dutchman I’m hardly able to understand the English spoken language but your speak goes right into the understanding. Thank you Sir.
My pleasure, thank you!
I could sit all day and night and listen to your stories. Just fabulous. Thank You!
Thanks for the fun video. That murder map is a little goldmine of inspiration for creative writing.
Great episode when I was child in 1970 we bought books to scare us boys.
This video be great for 10 - 15 year old boys today. Maybe you can recruit 1 more historian for the future.
It is all statistics but if this series keep at it you can recruit more future historians then 1.
A medieval murder map!!! What a wonderful gift! Thank you so much.
Good to know some traditions never die in good ole London!
I am bed bound at the moment and I have discovered your amazing channel. Thankyou so much you make my days more bearable. Hello from New Zealand 😊😊😊

Oh dear Kevin, thank you again!

Great job with this....have to admit, I laughed at the mental image of apprentice lawyers fighting it out in the street with swords!
Hello, kevin :) I just wanted to let you no your videos have really got me into medieval history, I really enjoy your castle walk videos. something about the way you explain everything is so pleasing to listen too. Kenilworth is a lovely castle, I've been to it many times as I used to live not far away. I hope to cover it one day 👍🏻
love your videos Kevin. as many others have said, you present these stories wonderfully- they are plenty of fun to follow along, they hold my interest all the way through, and they make the listener just that little bit more informed on life (and death!) of older times. God bless.
Cheers for that, I appreciate it 👍🏻

Cheers, will do 👍🏻
What goes around comes around, nothing new under the sun, great vid Kevin.
Once again thank you Sir for the brilliant video lecture on the London Murder Map! Extremely informative and vividly narrated. I humbly await your next video offering!👊👍
Cheers Fred 👍🏻
I have always found history interesting, yes the wars and the huge armies and vast empires that paint over swathes of the world map, yes they are rather fun to learn about, but whats more amazing is the individuals and their stories that forged these tales. we often say "Oh this city fell after a 2 year siege by a 10000 strong army" so casually but the fact is each of those 10000 men lived everyday lives like us for 2 years. they laughed, sometimes cried, suffered and like us, wonder. They are us, we are them. i love that kind of history but it's hard to find. But you sir, you with your amazing tales and lovely storytelling have given me a new window in life to learn what i wanted to learn. Thank you
My pleasure, thanks for watching 👍🏻
Brilliant as always!
Thanks!I love your videos and charisma!
Love all your videos great work love from BirminghamUK x
Cheers Sam 👍🏻
Best channel on RUclips. I love bows and history.
Fantastic video! Thank you!
Love from Indiana, USA! Good work, Kevin!
Thank you. Interesting as always!
Every time I order anything online, I get excited about the delivery and spend days hoping today I'll hear that letter box flap open. Got me thinking, hundreds of years ago there must have been a knight in my situation, but waiting for his suit of armour to be made! Would you please consider making a video about the process of how a set of armour is produced, the time frame and the cost? Think it would be fascinating. Thank you.
Hi Samuel, funny enough when I was back in England this spring I met up with a great armourer and made a couple of films with them. They'll be coming along in due course 👍
What a group 😅 you sir are a class act and I do my best to share your stories
Much appreciated, thanks!
Great Episode. Cheers
Love the style of clothes that you wear Kevin.
Do You have them handmade especially for each episode or,
do you have them hanging in your wardrobe waiting for that day when you can wear them?
😂 a bit of both, but I often make them myself
Excellent stuff! 👍
Great video, it would be interesting to learn about the coroners office in another one!
Thank you for yet another great video. Any chance you could do a piece on the Hanseatic League?
My list is long, but I might add it. Thanks for the suggestion 👍🏻
Outstanding, sir. Perhaps someone could try to tie the court records with the Coroner's Inquest. Wink, wink...
😜
Here we go again! I’m getting a whisky ready for this one
😜
Early finish today and I get to sit down with a cuppa and listen to to some great history stories.
Nice one Bill, have a great weekend 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad Thanks.Have a good one too.👍
wonderful storyteller. Always enjoy your tales of old, you bring th to life😍😍😍
Your story reminds me of when I asked my high school bus driver to sign to be a reference on my pistol permit( he was also a city policeman). He said yes and gave me this piece of advice, John if you ever have to use your pistol on a person make sure you kill them. I asked why you’re a policeman? I will never forget his answer, if you shoot to wound and go to court make sure there’s only one story told!
@OsakaRose that was quite poor advice, and I hope you never get a chance to put it to ill effect. You see, there's a pesky little thing by the name of FORENSIC SCIENCE... by which it can be readily determined that someone was dragged from a to b and whether or not an object was actually held in a hand.
@@baronedipiemonte3990 No it is very sound advice no matter what someone’s intentions are ( do harm/cause death) if they are wheeled into court someone will give them the sympathy vote. This way if you are protecting your life or a family member ,that’s all that gets told!
Great video - would like to hear more of these in the future!
Interessting! Thank you for the Info. Going to check out the other murders on the Map (thank you for the Link)👍
This fellow is a treasure
good storytelling and characters had extraordinary names also.
6:05 immediately made me think of the fight from Anchorman 2 lol
