The LAZIEST BROADCASTING DECISION in NFL on CBS HISTORY | Packers @ Bears (1987)

  • In week 12 of the 1987 NFL season between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, a bunch of people naturally thought that the CBS Indianapolis affiliate, WISH, would televise the game on CBS, since it was an important game, and since the Bears had a strong presence in the city. Instead, CBS decided to do something completely different. And the reason for not showing the Bears game? They were too lazy to do it. This is the story behind the lazy decision that, somehow, worked out in the end

The Blackout rule was completely irrelevant and pointless pretty much from the AFL merger on. Nobody that owned a franchise in the NFL was ever going to be in danger of losing their shirt by that point. This was an archaic rule formulated during television’s infancy and it’s stupid it took until recently for it to finally go away.

Didn't the American Football League have no TV blackouts, meaning that if you lived in a city with an AFL team, you got all of that team's telecasts, home and away (it's my understanding that not every AFL game was televised by a network)?

You have to wonder if that station manager had interrupted her "vacation" to come in to make switches, she would have had to deal with a ton of unintended consequences from her family. Some families, especially back then were very rigid about such things (especially if you had patriarchs/matriarchs who expected things to be a certain way and only that way) and that is not something you can easily admit to.
Otherwise, such station manager should have been fired unless she could show a good reason for not coming in to make the switch, even if it inconveniences others.

I miss AstroTurf stadiums in general. To me, as a viewer (via television) and listener (via radio), it just seemed to make the games better.
Natural grass fields are, in my opinion, bad for a number of reasons, not the least of which is having to account for weather conditions. However, this whole idea of "FieldTurf" in recent years is, quite simply, the worst of the worst, among other reasons, the fact that that type of surface contains tire grounds, which are kicked up in divots when the players are running. Additionally, that type of surface seems to be an effort of accommodating proponents of both AstroTurf and natural grass, only by making a cheap compromise.
Admittedly, I'm aware of the safety concerns attributed to AstroTurf. If the manufacturers, stadium managers and football and baseball programs (including the players, since they are the principal stakeholders in this discussion) would get together in good faith and come up with a surface which has the look and style of AstroTurf without those alleged safety issues, then we might have a bona-fide solution to the question of playing surface. Until then, however, I would return to AstroTurf and have players wear extra padding like they did in the '70's and '80's.

The part about blacking out a home game on the home city affiliate of the network televising it made sense in trying to motivate ticket sales. But I never got why the blackout protocol included the other Sunday afternoon network. In this case, CBS, the NFC's network at the time, had the doubleheader rights for that particular Sunday. WISH, the Indianapolis CBS affiliate, wasn't going to be able to air the Oilers-Colts game, sold out or not, because NBC had it. Whether that game was sold out 72 hours before kickoff or not should have had no bearing on WISH being able to air two CBS, that is NFC, games that Sunday. They should have been able to show the Packers-Bears game AND the Redskins-Giants game.
Another head-scratching aspect to the NFL blackout protocol was when the game sold out for a doubleader Sunday for the televising network, that network could only air that game, That made no sense at all.

Got a really odd one that caused a twitter firestorm for JG8 involves a FCS HBCU game running WAY long taking away the first half of the WNBA finals on espn and rather amusing clash between overlapping fanbases who felt disrespected for many years

More, like, unsatisfyable, they think that the problems that apply to broadcasting, somehow, don't apply to them, really, truly, pathetic.

The blackout rule was so insane. People who lived hundreds of miles from the stadiums couldn't watch the games because otherwise they'd drive 3 hours to spend a week's wages to see it in person.

Blackout rule was for a 75-mile radius. Baseball is ridiculous, where games are blacked out in Hawaii
