  • Nick D'Virgilio shares some tips and techniques for multitrack recording with Universal Audio's Apollo 8p audio interface. Loaded with cutting-edge digital conversion and eight Unison-equipped preamps and UAD-2 QUAD core processing, the Universal Audio 18-in/24-out Apollo 8p Thunderbolt audio interface demonstrates exactly why the Apollo line has been one of the most popular audio-interface series Sweetwater has ever carried. Thanks to the extreme speed of Thunderbolt 2 connectivity, the Apollo 8p lets you access UAD powered plug-ins as you record - all with less than 2ms of latency.

    SIDE NOTE: The first video below is a great video to watch on all of the details of the Apollo 8 family of products. Even though Mitch is showing the Apollo 8 it is very similar to the 8P. The software interface looks and works the same. The only main difference are some of the inputs and outputs. The 8P has 8 mic/line inputs while the 8 has 4.

    Nick, I just have to say after viewing many of your videos, you are just so smooth and effortless when you play no matter what genre you decide to play. You are Dr Smoothie on drums thanks for being who you are.

    I love you Nick, and I know you genuinely think that this interface is awesome (which I'm sure it is), but I think it's important that viewers know that you won't automatically get great drum recordings with just this interface. You need to have well-tuned drums, mild/good sound-treatment, and good mic placement. That should always come before an expensive interface. Again, I love you and your work with Sweetwater, just providing some customer feedback (:

      This point should be gospel for the whole recording process. So much money goes into buying hope, when the most important element, the thing you're recording, is often ignored. So many lost holidays (and then some) for gear!

      One question: can I get the same drums result if I record clean on Midas R32 (no EQ, no compressor, no effects) and Mix after in my Apollo Twin, I mean add UA EQ, compressor, efects after record? Thank you so much for the great video!

    Nick - great video. I'm pre-shopping interfaces and mics now and really enjoyed this. Now, I know you're a Mapex guy. I'm needing a couple of those chrome/black b800 cymbal stands. They discontinued. So if you run across - look over in the direction, will ya? LOL

    Hi thank you a lot for: I really appreciate you took the time to make
    the great instructional video! I have a question: is it possible to
    record clean with another console e.g. Midas 32R Live and afterwards add
    the compressor, eq and effects with UA Apollo Twin and get the same
    results?

    Does the Apollo x8 have the same capability ?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  2 года назад

      Hi, Ronald! Thanks for the interest. The Apollo X series does indeed have the same capabilities as the older MkII series, which was the latest when Nick made this video. However, you would probably want to look at the x8P, not just the x8 - the x8 just has four preamps built in, but the x8P has all eight just like the older 8P. Hope this helps, and feel free to contact me directly with any further questions!

    The Apollo 8p comes with that program that is used to EQ the drums? Or is that another program it needs ?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the note, Diego. There certainly are some plug-ins that come with the Apollo 8p, and UA makes a ton of great plug-ins that can be purchased later that are great on drums. So the answer is no, but some of the plug-ins (the preamps, in particular) don't come with the hardware, but can be purchased separately. Thanks for your interest!

    So for the interface and all mics we're looking at about $5,500 not including the software, computer, mic stands/clips/cables/whatever. Yep...great for the at-home drummer looking to lay down some tracks.

    • @alexfraley
      @alexfraley 7 лет назад +9

      Yeah it is. For the drummer who is recording at a home studio this is perfect. Or a youtube drummer doing covers and is looking to monetize it. $5500 is extremely reasonable for basically a full home studio setup.

    • @RoeShamBoe
      @RoeShamBoe 7 лет назад +1

      Don't forget that this interface has dual adat ports meaning you can add banks of channels for pretty low cost per channel!
      However, to clear up a misconception about drum covers on youtube, those drummers make ZERO dollars on those videos. ALL the ad revenue goes to whoever has filed a copyright claim with YT (usually the publisher). As soon as those videos are 'published' by the drummer, the bots tag the video and RUclips diverts all ad revenue to whoever is on file as the copyright holder. Cobus explains this in one of his videos but it happens even in gaming videos, I've had a 30 second clip of a song in the background and boom you get a copyright claim and your ad revenue is gone. This even happens if you are talking over the clip or playing your own drums along to the music, the bots will still tag the song as copyrighted and you get no money.
      You can try to slow the song down or change the pitch enough that the bots leave you alone but it's sometimes not possible because the song is too distorted.
      What drum covers CAN do for you is get your name out there and get you work. (See aforementioned Cobus and his tour with Busted and tryouts for Justin Beiber - all from drum covers)

    • @alexfraley
      @alexfraley 7 лет назад

      Yeah you can, theres some hoops to jump through, but it can be done. I had 3 up with full monetization on 2 and partial on 1 being a Paramore cover.

    I've yet to find a good sounding apollo 8 recording. This one at least has some highs in it, but it still is far away from any mojo, be it modern or vintage. It's average sounding if at all, like any 500 bucks-mixer mic preamps were used, and still very roomy-sounding. I hear no detail of drums or cymbals at all.
