I really enjoyed the simplicity, the thought for detail, and the lack of perfection; so refreshing. Im going to have to make these now, but mine will be local bigleaf maple or wild cherry. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed the video. Took me back to the rainy days I would spend on a stool watching my grandfather work on his magical tools creating useful things for the farm. Amazing!
Thank you. Excellent step by step video. I’ve been thinking about making some and you’ve inspired me to get on with it. Love your shop because it looks like most real shops and i appreciate the authenticity. Cheers from UK
Hi James I really enjoyed the video thanks , could you please say what the 45 degree tenon cutter tool is please and the bit you used for 45 degree countersinking . Thanks
Thanks for Your video, like it very much - made me buy tenon cutters and countersink bits at Lumberjack. Greetings from Finland, next summer will be woodworking summer! Merry Xmas
Great video. Have some driftwood branches doing nothing in my yard and will have a go making some stools. Keep making more sawdust. Thanks from the sunny North East Coast, England.
Great video thanks for taking the time to share. It's the first time I ever seen that hand held mortice giant pencil eraser it looks like something Flash Gordon would use on the bad guys.
James, Great video and really nice how it turned out. I have a lot of tools also and liked the jig you made to hold the logs for draw knifing and tenon cutting. One other option is to build yourself a shave horse to hold your wood, but you would need to cut your leg lengths first, then take each piece to a shavehorse to debark, shape, and cut the tenon.
wow, that turned out great!! a slight chamfer/bevel on the bottom edge of the legs may help prevent tiny chunks of wood from splitting off the edge when the stool is slid around but like i said, great result
Great vid. Great Stool. Thanks for the upload, very inspiring (gonna have a go at this one) Happy New Year ! By the way, if you're looking for the remote control. Its under the coffee table !!Happy days.
can you do this with green freshly cut wood? I have a small timber lot with maples and birch and my son is starting to show a serious interest in simple woodworking with his hatchet from felling and limbing trees to making wooden wedges and mauls etc. I think he would love to make this stool for his workbench he is 7
Where did you get the countersink bit for recessing the legs in the top? The drill bit that is in your drill press. I have looked everywhere and can't find it. You did a great job and I will re-watch this as I am going to make some too.
Looks beautiful Of course, the forest can still be seen in the stool. I would have left the glue off. Drilling that with the wood around the angle is a good idea. Have you ever tried to use a wooden thread? I would like to see if it holds up well.
I am loving your video and I am less than 1/4 of the way through. PLEASE wear safety protection! I gather since you do not protect your eyes, you also neglect your ears. I wish my father could hear everyone at holidays when everyone gathers. I see him nearly every day. I know what he can and cannot hear (for the most part). He is too shy to tell everyone when they gather that he cannot hear. I have to witness him shaking his head or laughing bc we laugh...don't make those who are the closest be your witness. Protect your ears. You are young enough to learn.
To assemble the finished product, in reverse order, put the C-leg in the C-hole, put the B-leg in the B-hole, and put the A-leg in the A-hole. Enjoyed your video.
What did you use to cut the tips of the legs off after you put wedges in?! Wish that part was shown. I'm guessing a Dremel or something as not to cut the surface of stool and to get nice and flush. Thank you
I was reading these comments to see if that was answered! Very detailed and helpful otherwise. Also, do the wedges go into the seat or stop level with the top?
cdouglas1942 Thanks I found the sharpener part, but all they has as auger bits and not a tapered paddle bit to make a hole that will conceal most of the male end into it. Is there a special name for the bit?
I don't have the tapered tool either., I think I got my "sharpener" part from Lee-Valley so a phone call to them might solve the problem. Not sure they're necessary, but its an esthetic approach in a mostly not visible place.
James, you might be interested in a new tool called a Cylinder Mill. It does some of the things you are doing on here. Great stool by the way. I'll have to try my hand at one of these.
I absolutely love your stools. Do you sell them? They are gorgeous...❤ And please what are the tools called to make the 45 degree angle on the feet and to make the 45 degree angle in seat And who sells them please....enjoyed your video very much
Hi James, loved your video, and would love to make some of these, I really enjoy making stuff with no nails or screws...:) What is the name of the 'giant pencil sharpener' bit you used to shape the tenon on the legs please? Are these available, or did you machine it yourself? Very handy... Thanks for the Vid!
I have been all through the Woodcraft site and it is very hard to find something without a name of the bit or a part number, can you give me a little more to go on other than "a 45 degree bit?

Not sure. It was a while ago. But my usual was 80 grit, 120, up to 400. But this was also to be rustic so I think I stopped before 240. Thanks for watching!

James, when I build a 3-legged stool, I add a faux (wooden) 3-teated cow udder just for kicks - a so-called milk stool.
haha. Thanks for watching!
wow, that turned out great!!
a slight chamfer/bevel on the bottom edge of the legs may help prevent tiny chunks of wood from splitting off the edge when the stool is slid around
