    As a young sport fanatic growing up in Wales I was mesmerised by 5 great voices on the tv. Eddie Butler was no question one of them. He will be sorely missed by the rugby community. For the record the other four were Bill McLaren, Murray Walker, John Motson and David Coleman. May they all rest in peace.

    Hathred between welsh and Irish, where is it? Iv worked with them for decades and NEVER heard it. My mother worked with them in liverpool in 1950s and always remembers them fondly unlike the irish there in management who were detested. Irish and Welsh have a lot of historical similarities that have shaped both nations and lack of self confidence and self help are amongst them.

    I’ve always been interested in how they manage to get such higher levels of population who speak Welsh compared to the population of Ireland that speak Irish. I think Irish being taught as a second language in schools has failed, I wonder are Welsh speaking schools more common over there.

    • @garjones99
      @garjones99 2 года назад +2

      Yes essentially I don't think second language teaching really works as very little seems to be retained. Schools in the medium of Welsh are available to everyone and have been expanding since they were established as they tend to deliver better academic results.

    • @harshbutfair8993
      @harshbutfair8993 2 года назад +4

      It's just been a disastrous approach for generations, particularly by government in Ireland to promoting our native language. When you don't hear the language outside of the 40 minutes class you have, when its use by government and in sporting occasions has been reduced to a ceremonial language, and when the dual language street signs have Irish in a smaller lowercase font (I know that traditional Irish is written in lowercase) then as a kid growing it gets into your subconscious that this isn't important (wrongly so imo to be clear). And yeah as Gareth Jones says I think if subjects aren't taught in the native language then it's far more difficult to retain. So I think the ideal for those with kids and who want their kids to learn their native tongue, be it Irish, Welsh or other minority language, then you need to send them if at all possible to a school where that language is the medium of instruction, English is so dominant in the world that they are going to learn that anyway.
      Super interesting interview BTW. It didn't initially click with me who Eddie Butler was when I started watching the interview, but definitely a voice that grabs your attention and is easy to listen to.

    • @TheLastAngryMan01
      @TheLastAngryMan01 2 года назад +2

      The desire for political independence from Britain (England?) was always a much stronger force in Ireland than in Wales. For that reason (and others related to emigration, economic isolation etc.) the Irish language was always a subordinate consideration when rebuilding the Irish sense of nationhood. Catholicism was also central to this for a long time, but this seems to have passed, thankfully for many of us.
      It seems to me that the Welsh largely accepted being subsumed into Britain after the Reformation (which they mostly accepted) and express their national pride via things like rugby union, music, language etc.
      I still don't understand why they voted for Brexit, mind you, but I suspect the large English population within their borders might have tilted the balance there.

      The Welsh do not love Boris any more than the (Northern) Irish or Scottish. It is the English who adore(d) Boris and his obviously fake persona and habitual lying.

      Butler is a French-Norman/Anglo-Norman/Anglo-Irish-Norman surname. Not indigenous to UK or Ireland I'm afraid

      @@BoomsRiddico4868 Your original comment was the name "has its roots" in Ireland. It doesn't: It has branches in Ireland. The Butler name in Ireland is primarily associated with the Earls of Ormond, a family so devoid of principle that they flip-flopped their way through history depending on which despotic English Royal would either cut their heads off or pay them more loot (all the way from the Wars of the Roses to 1922) some of them so pernicious they didn't even know they had the title but took the money anyway (see 15th Earl). Given that pedigree I suspect Eddie wouldn't want to be reminded that possible distant cousins were so nefarious in deed.
