Hi. I know this is a year old but I think the best way to learn it is to understand basic music theory first, like how notes, tempo, etc works. I find having these knowledge helps with any instruments your going to play. ^^ since I know my music theory from playing the flute, getting on the kalimba was very easy!

THIS blond kalimba is an older Hugh Tracey kalimba that my son found for me on e-bay about 5 years ago. It took me 1 year to even like this kalimba, and another year for it to become my favorite kalimba - long story!

Yes, about 10 % of players use their thumb pads. It hurts at first... don’t play more than about 10 or 15 minutes a day.... but over a few weeks you will develop calluses and the pain is gone, and you will be able to build up to hours of playing.

This was originally a Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba in G, but with a low note of B. I wanted the KEY NOTE to also be the LOW NOTE, and going to Bb was the easiest way to get there. I then painted it like an ALTO (with 6 tines painted). This was the VERY FIRST of the Bb Treble Kalimba, and is still one of my favorites.

      kalimbamagic.com/tablature
The "Fun and Games with the 10-Note Kalimba" starts out with a numbers-based system, and gently leads you through the tablature.

Either works. If you have larger thumbs, there is actually more space between the 10 Note tines. If you have any anxiety over playing music, go for 10-Notes. If you are very confident, or have good fine motor skills, or you know about music and harmony already, for the 17-Notes.

Hanykah - it sounds like you need a music teacher, or you need to study a bit. Kalimba Magic's site has a lot of distributed (ie, not centralized) info on Chords - I suggest you go to the blog page and search for "chord" and start reading there. Chords tend to skip every other note of the scale.... so 1 - 3 - 5 or 2 - 4 - 6. I have written dozens of articles that refer to chords, so you should be able to find a lot. ALSO, tablature is a better system for doing chords on the kalimba. - Mark
