The way they marketed and objectified this young man, you'd had to be blind to know that this would not turn out well for him.

Yeah kinda sad
Its not just him, or brooke, or MANY of the other unfortunate souls in those years. Its still happening right now. Take a look at the pop industry in east Asia for example. To mention the boy group TXT, I don’t know much about them aside from that they are still so incredibly young (there’s boys and girls that debut at 14, and become objectified by media.) I think it’s horrible and it has to stop. You can’t put an age on succes, but if it were possible Id make a rule for no idolizing until age 18 at least.
The adults involved in destroying this kid need to be locked up.
They probably mostly dead by now.
They all dead unless they are Queen Elizabeth of Britain
I guess I'm dumb... I understand a little bit but can anyone please explain it to me
Good luck with that. These people are all well connected and protected. It's why they wasted no time in eliminating Jeffery Epstein, unless you are one of those who really thinks he killed himself. But then if he did, this would have been his second time on an attempt on his life, so why wasn't the Feds watching out for him more carefully????

The irony of the comments judging his appearance, when the movie itself talks about how people were not able to see HIM, how he was not able to become someone, because his thoughts and who he is never mattered...that now at his old age, he still feels lost, like he could never find himself. Everything he was and his worth as someone was directly correlated on how he looked like. People who live like this dont feel like people, dont feel like they are connected with anyone and its fucking depressing tbh i feel sad for the boy and I hope he is able to find happiness and peace.
Right?? They're completely missing the point, "I've seen prettier", or "... is more beautiful", seems they're more bothered with the title and not with the subject of the movie and the fact that he was literally exploited sexualized and (likely) abused when he was only 14/15..

*"When you've lost so much, it somehow, in its own special way, makes life easier to live."*
that hit me hard.
Yes Lux bcz when someone is very ordinary, nobody bothers with them. They lose nothing bcz they never lived the high life. Life would be intolerable to have had it all in one's youth, then lose it all one day. Those who had an ordinary life have had nothing to lose in the first place, then miss it all.
So relatable
Another angle of it is:
"The less you have, the more free you are"
It really does make life easier. Just don't let down your guard because life can make it difficult again even when you've already lost so much. That is my own opinion though.

For anyone saying they dont see anything wrong with this. The movie itself can seem innocent and inoffensive but if you've never dived into the horrors that happen behind the scenes of Hollywood child exploitation and abuse I invite you to do so. So many directors and producers abused young celebrities behind closed doors and you'd never suspect a thing due to the secrecy of everything. It isn't until very later in life that they open up about the horrors they've lived. Quit supporting heretical behavior in the name of art. This is creepy to the core. He could've just looked for a grown man that looked young enough and handsome enough to fit the role, it didn't have to be a literal 15 year old teenager. Hollywood and the entertainment industry is sick and perverted, get over it
The best comment I've read so far. Art and the creator can't be separated.
Visconti was not a Hollywood man, and none of the film was made in Hollywood. There is nothing to suggest any kind of child exploitation or abuse. In an interview I saw a number of years ago, Andresen actually said that when he was with Visconti, he felt safe. Just because Visconti was a homosexual, doesn't mean he was salivating over the boy. He was a seasoned and professional director, who made some of the most beautiful films ever, of a kind unknown in Hollywood.
Because so many puritans in the US have such prurient minds (a characteristic of puritans), Hollywood is terrified of using real boys for boys' parts. And we get adults playing teenagers, making the whole thing ridiculous. The worst example I can think of is All the Pretty Horses, with Matt Damon in his thirties playing a teenager.
(Let it be noted that I have nowhere stated my opinion of the film as it is in the context irrelevant.)

I was noticing that, but didn't want to say; he's not just his face and his body; to only be acknowledged for the physical appearance must likely be tiresome for him.
His soul will be fine. He's Gods child.
I guess that beauty lies in his way of thinking, and what experience made him out to be. An extraordinarily clear-eyed philosopher's soul that's mysteriously beautiful, but sad.
So, basically he won a expensive GENETICAL lottery of being one of the most beautiful boy and like some cases of lottery, instead of giving him a better life it made things worse for him.
Money and fame can be good but isn't everything a human need. after Robin William's suicide I can confirm it. The Depression is Universal.
He was born quite androgynous in an age more repressed than we live in now where "being a man" just did not blend well with looking like a beautiful young woman. Visconti didn't destroy his life, WE DID.

God he is a gorgeous old man, love the long hair more of that please
Not the first child-youth actor who have pains and difficulties in later life. This young man was truly beautiful - it's worth to admit, even though western culture is at an unease about the concept of male beauty, - The problem is that beauty is the most fragile thing one can hold in his or her life. I believe young stars are unprepared for the devastating loss, when their beauty and youth departing with the passage of time.
The way this has happened so many times. So many cases where children have been exploited in the entertainment industry. It's so fucked up man.
Now with technology, children are exploiting themselves online. Tik Tok is a great example since so many people there are underage, and people sexualize them regardless of how old they are. It's disgusting.
this is all very sad, BUT lemme just say, he's got some amazing hair genetics

@@ejsbxbeiaskd1770 I haven't seen the film so you are right, I'm not taking its message into consideration. My opinion is purely based on appearance.
There's something so flawed amongst humans that they want to find this one "most beautiful something in the world" when there are so many beautiful things all around us.
Beautiful comment
woah dude ... nice
Not to mention beauty is subjective. Someone can find something beautiful, while another person might find it ugly. We'll never find perfection when there is no such thing as perfection, especially since it differs from person to person.
@@BooksToAshes
That logic is kind of faulty.
If one person can absolutely believe that one thing is perfect then by their reality it is.
Everyone elses opinion wouldnt change that.
It is interesting though, the word “most”.
Sure there are beautiful things around us but there is a magic to “the most beautiful” that those other things cant come close to.
Its like the word “better”.
Its natural for humans to go after “better” because we know we can be.
And we admire everything and everyone that is.
Its the same logic here.
Be kind to everyone - you never know what someone has been through.
Went from a beautiful boy into a awesome hippie!
I won't lie, he was/is handsome but just because one is attractive doesn't give anyone the free pass to treat him however they want. It's really sad how they treated him like an object, he deserved better. I hope no one blames him because from what I see he was put into that environment and he wasn't protected from it.

This is the problem in thinking of so called 'woke' generation of 2020.. :) You have simply removed every nuances from life and straight jacketed everything from idea of women to men , from feminism to art to everything..

I am a 14 year old girl who recently found this video. It is true, I find him to be very pretty, but I would never go out of my way to fantasize over him in person and see him as an idol withought even knowing him.
True beauty is in the soul, how bright it shines and how you walk the path of light. How you express yourself withought harming others and being a role model for goodness..
Withought getting a chance to live a life in which you know yourself can impact you physically and emotionally. Never idolize somone based off of their looks, for that could truly lead you to corruption.
That being said, I feel that this boy could have shared much more beautiful things rather than looks... It breaks my heart to know that adults would do such a thing for their own greed. If the man that chose this boy to be in his movie was as beautiful as him, would you idolize him not caring that he impacted this boys life just because he was beautiful?
Beauty isn't always in somthing that is appealing to the eye, and even still it should be respected.
A fool would pick a beautiful flower to hold it in his house just so that he could see that he holds it- leaving it soon to die and wither.
A wise man would let the beautiful flower be, allowing it to live its fullest life.
My heart goes to you my friend, you are still yet beautiful within.

My first thought was, "youth is beauty," but then I second guessed myself. I imagine if I hadn't seen another human being in 20 years, I would better realize that all humans are beautiful. That said, Bjorn Anderson makes for a very elegant, graceful and beautiful older man too. His aesthetic beauty has evolved with him.
Indeed. Not all beautiful young boys grow up that way. Look at Elijah Wood - lovely child and young adult, but geez, is he ever goofy looking now.

Youth is not beauty. Beauty is beauty.
That boy was so beautiful, I almost cried just knowing that it would cease to exist someday
"Ultimately, everyone wanted a piece of the most beautiful boy in the world. The most beautiful boy in the world just wanted to be a boy."
Popular culture has such a fascination with physical beauty at the exclusion of so many much more important things. What is interesting about this is that the 'victim' (so to speak) is male rather than female. So much fixation on one's physical image, particularly when the whole world is watching, can make an empty shell of a person, especially if it happens when they are young and don't have an emotionally intelligent family, who is able to see them in a deeper unconditionally loving way. Ugh, the human created world is so weird and disconnected.
Except he's not a victim. His beauty gave him opportunities in film. He was rewarded handsomely for his acting job, got to see the world, and then it was over. And like so many young actors, he couldn't repeat the success, got himself into trouble, and blamed it on those who had treated him well rather than those who treated him badly.
There's a reason why no director, including Visconti, ever wanted to work with him again. Beauty alone is never enough.
@deborah lariscy: He could, but he isn't.
@@ixlnxs he still could be a victim. A lot of people believe the quote = "money doesn't bring happiness", and all the good doesn't necessarily outweigh any bad affecting him. Especially at his young age when starting, and other emotional baggage.
I completely agree. I think it has something to do with a particular strain of human narcissism that renders society and certain individuals an inability to see anything beyond another person's usefulness, much less another person's complete and nuanced humanity.
@@chancletadeldiablo894 Well said.
Remember, Visconti got very caught up in the extraordinary story: the writer Eschenbach is obsessesd witht the beautiful boy as a symbol of creativity, art and the sexuality behind it, as he was slowly, pathetically dying.

@@eduardochavacano Being beautiful can have horrible consequences. It depends on the person.
Unfortunately, he was part of this movie period between the late 60's and early 70's that was highly obsessed in disguise the sexuality as an art form. This genre exploited the beauty and/or nudity of an actor in a morbid way; causing to some of them indelible wounds.
Like that actress who never recovered after she did that infamous movie with Marlo Brando . She was like 18 and he was in his 50s . Hollywood isn’t for the faint hearted people , you gotta have strong , powerful people /family to protect you.
I remember the sad history life of Eva Ionesco. Same period of 70s and early 80s. Nico (Christa Päffgen)was another victim, but, in her case, she turned out the things the opposite. She was still a miserable person, but, at least, faithful to her own truth
Except that 'Death In Venice' didn't exploit the boy in any such way. There is no nudity in the film. If anything, the camera spends almost all of its time at some distance from the boy - for a good third of the film we don't see him at all.
@@philipford6183 Indeed. Anyone who knows Andresen will tell you that it's his acting experience that wounded him. It's the crime scene he threw himself into when his wonder years were over. It's the drugs.
@@philipford6183 Thanks for your comment; but let's not be that simple. In his particular case, I was referring in how Luchino Visconti used the beauty of an actor, to portrait the power of seduction that lies in the naive curiosity of a beautiful boy; that eventually triggers the burning desire of a dying man. After seeing the movie, that's the image, that will remain in the viewer's mind. Visconti end up rising the boy into the level of a sex simbol; and with that, certain repercussions follow.
