The LARGEST Tornado Ever Recorded: El Reno

- The 2013 El Reno, Oklahoma Tornado that took the lives of eight people and four storm chasers. The El Reno tornado might be the scariest storm ever witnessed. Despite this, it had little damage and so it was classified as an EF3, despite its strong winds and size. This is to date the largest tornado that has ever existed and certainly caught on film. At its peak it was 2.6 miles wide. The entire cell came down and spawned multiple subvortices that orbited around the tornado. The subvortices contained the strongest wind speeds at 302 mph, one of the strongest recorded wind speeds of any known tornado. the storm ballooned so quickly that many storm chasers who were close to the initial funnel found themselves trapped within the tornado and struggling to escape. It was actually one of the subcortices that took the life of Tim Samaras and his team. R.I.P.

this is why the ef scale is flawed wind speeds in radar should have more sway in the designation than damages alone. 240 to 260 and up should be f5 no matter if it hits anything or not

this tornado is equal to the 99 moore f5 tornado pf may 3rd, funny enough both the moore 2013, elreno, moore 99 were in the same month, same state and of the el reno had hit the town itself, same rating
If the El Reno tornado hit a population center.... I don't want to even imagine the loss of life it would have caused.
The death toll would be massive. Anybody who wouldn't be in a storm shelter wouldn't make it.
El Reno is actually only a couple of miles away from Oklahoma City so just imagine on how the damage would turn out of it hit it.
@@IDK_22117yep, if it had gone a little bit further, would’ve been the deadliest tornado to have happened in the usa, especially because 300+ mph winds in the main funnel and god knows how high the winds were in the sub-vortices, only way to have survived was to be underground.
Largest tornado ever and second fastest ever reported. If this thing was 30 miles more east, it would’ve hit okc and been by far the worst tornado ever and probably one of the worst natural disasters in American history
It was as wide as a town it would have completely obliterated a populated area we still don’t know how strong this tornado truly was.
I remember this. I was a huge fan of Samaras. So sad losing him & his son.
It was very shocking.

That was a very scary tornado. I watched it on the news from Missouri. I FELT the fear in the weather peoples voices. It was a horrible time for El Reno and one that was unforgettable. And still is to this day.
What about the other storm chasers like Richard Henderson?
Bro the coolest thing is imagine someone phone get sucked while recording they capture the whole footage of how it feels
That would be cool. Now imagine if it was a VR camera.
There is some absolutely insane footage out there from this tornado. I remember one in particular the 2 guys were close to it during the time when it rapidly ballooned up to its maximum size. They got caught inside it and are literally running for their lives away from the vortices. At one point they are in a group of cars and stop suddenly because they see the shift. The other 2 cars kept going and get disappeared by a massive sub vortex that is probably the size of an EF3 in itself. This storm was on another level, absolutely wild.
Edit: went back to find the footage, this is hands down the wildest footage i've run across from the storm: ruclips.net/video/blVyiLeJ6wY/видео.html
@@adamconner9302 ruclips.net/video/fkmJKKUqZDU/видео.html This one is also insanely close. That ghostly green glow is wild. You can literally just see it grow in size within seconds its amazing it didn't hit a heavily populated city.
Being sucked up into a tornado is like being in a blender. Debris inside the tornado alone would chop you up.
absolutely insane
I grew up in Jerrell Texas. I was in the one in 1997 and it took a lot of peoples lives. Most of them are repeople and families, but hearing about the Moore Oklahoma tornado when I saw that video the thing that upsets me is that their sirens never went off ahead of time, especially when the tornadoes right in front of the school to this day, I still think about the people that lost in Moore Oklahoma, including in my state of Texas Jerrell, Texas, in 1997. God bless you guys you guys and girls are always going to be in my heart forever. Stay safe.
God bless the people who were unfortunately taken too soon. may they rest peacefully.
That tornado started in my front yard in Lorena Texas I was a police officer back then and I was just getting home in my patrol car. I followed fat tornado all the way down at 35 until it turned into the monster that it did and I was the first responding first responder to the tornado damage. I saw things there I did not think were possible and it still haunts my dreams now all these years later.
We have some insane tornadoes here in Oklahoma. Scariest thing to ever witness.
Yes bout to have one
Yes I was 4 when the 2013 tornado happened I was in Moore but we moved now to Norman
I’ve talked to a lot of Oklahomans and they act like tornadoes ain’t nothing. They see one coming and want to sit outside in a lawn chair and just watch it lol.

2.6 MILES WIDE AND WIND SPEEDS OF 302 MPH!? HOLY SH!T!!! That is a monster of a tornado. That ain’t no EF-5, that’s an EF-MONSTER!!!
And to think it was officially classified as an EF-3.
@@historicaltidbitscorruption is all i can say to that.
@Zwerchau- insurance companies do anything in their power to stop tornadoes from being ranked higher, the higher it’s ranked the more they have to pay.
bro a ef5 is a tiny pebble compared to that💀
@Zwerchau- insurance companies always downplay tornadoes so that they don’t have to pay as much.
I remember this tornado. Scary as hell
I was in the town next to El reno, yukon. It was coming for us and turned a 45 degree north taking out the vocation center and missing my town of 20k completely .. very lucky we would have all been dead
When i saw that thing on a visit, i was scared asf, it got me shaking, that behemoth was massive, but absolutely terrifying, i was with my father on a bench while visiting here, we ran for our lives seeing this.
More explanation from the story to add: As the El Reno tornado (EF-3) started to ascend to 3 storm chasers Tim Samaras (prof. Storm chaser) and his two sons (I think) many stork chasers had gathered for this cell because it was very interesting (and powerful) as the supercell ascended to the ground (this means it’s a full tornado) it was very unpredictable because of its large size. Tim S. And his team found them surrounded with debris (at this time it was 70+ mph wind gusts) but luckily got out of it. After a while Tim’s team was recording the wide tornado,BUT they never knew it was heading directly for them (bc of its unpredictable size as I said). They then realized winds and hvy.rain was picking up,so they got in they’re car. Like I said, many storm chasers were there right? Well many people tried escaping because it was a MONSTER. That means that there was a traffic jam (the worst scenario when there’s a twister/tornado because your waiting for it). Unfortunately because of the highway jam a family of 2 died.. and I think one of the parents survived but whatever. Now that means the death toll is now 3. As Tim’s team saw a road, they wanted a better view. That’s exactly what they needed… but meanwhile the tornados width started rapidly intensifying and reached a outrages 2.6 MI. In width. As one of the crew members insisted that they should go get a better view (one of the worst decisions ever) Tim agreed. As they approached the tornado (they didn’t even know) they were ready to take action and take photos and videos. And at this time they realized… they were in the path…
At now it was too late,as the team got in the car it was already 100+ mph wind speeds.Due to the damaging debris and winds the car flipped. You could hear the roaring winds and debris smacking the car, this would mean that this was Tim’s final moments… Tim Samaras and his crew were unalived. This means this is the saddest moments in history of storm chasing timeline.
Fun facts (not even fun😐): the date was May 23,2013
Tim’s final moments won’t ever be released (for respect)
If they would have gone east they would be her today.
As you may know (Reed Timmer) was one of those (many chasers) who gathered and he didn’t die too.
The end.
if it had gone a little bit further, would’ve been the deadliest tornado to have happened in the usa, especially because 300+ mph winds in the main funnel and god knows how high the winds were in the sub-vortices, only way to have survived was to be underground.
Apparently the vortices inside this tornado were the size of regular tornadoes and they are what actually killed the storm chasers
@@JJJJ-he8bz it’s likely a mix of them getting pelted, severely damaged and flipped and then the large funnel hitting them.
The sub vortices were 300mph, not the entire circulation of the 2.6mile tornado ....
@@JJJJ-he8bzthose sub vortices hit 300mph and probably hit the twistex guys
