Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. JUST AN FYI on those barrels... I have a floating dock made with those barrels here on my ranch and I have to end up replacing several every spring because the ice crushes them during a pond freeze, even though they are all well sealed. Make sure you have top access after the thaw, to replace them if one fails, and you should have no problem.

That is exactly how I built mine 31 years ago and it is outside floating in my 1 acre pond still, and hopefully for many more years ! Love you girls !

Right! Right! Right! We wanted to have the dock in place before we started all the big projects with the cabin. We had a fun time building the dock. Hopefully the rest of the projects go as smoothly.

To most people, a dock would be one of the final touches to a cabin rebuild, but not to the Vanwives...love it!!!!!
We wanted to have a place to go and chills and play a little when we took a break.

thats what we use is the blue barrels to make our boat docks and platforms on the river. Good Job! I love the net. Last winter the river froze and most people pull them out but we left one in and it got froze in place, all good because it was metal rope tied down otherwise the thawing and river flooding would have washed it away, one blue barrel underneath out of 10 did break away loose.

Hi girls, i was crying watching your video, ... my golden retriever 11 y old, was had dysplasia , we went for the hip protshesis replacement in november last year, the vet didnt do a good job, 5 weer later broken femur, 3 moths later luxation of the hip hip prosthesis.... just 10 days ago , the hip replacement was removed, , 3 operation, many scanner, many radiologies, many painfull night and day of seeing our baby in pain,... he was full of live, loved swimming and he would jump from your dock like your babies do ... only now he cant ... Look after your babies, i know you do but be aware of how quick time past with them . Love your videos and even if i cry i love your dock. Big hugs

We love both the caramel and cinnamon spreads! Now I have to try and find some lol.
Cinnamon spread was discontinued but I found a recipe they say is very close.
Cinnamon Spread:
*1 Cup Margarine or Butter
(Do not leave on counter if you use butter-it will spoil)
*1 Tbsp Cinnamon
*1/2 tsp Cardamom
*1/4 cup Icing Sugar
*1/4 cup Brown Sugar
*1 Tbsp Vanilla
Whip all ingredients together until smooth. Store in airtight container in the fridge for a few weeks; if it lasts that long.

Hello ladies. You are going to want to strap the barrels in. also you may find the dock a bit high and bounce around a little when you move around on it. One trick is to fill the barrels 1/4 to 1/3 with water. that will lower it amd make it more stable.
I was thinking that about the barrels, that there was nothing keeping them in place.
Thank you for mentioning that. We thought about it and we may do that in the future when we take the dock out in the winter. Although the lake looks big it’s really a small pond with little water movement or wind, might be worth it!😊🐶
@@VanwivesYeah it's too late to let you gals know this but with those super long bolts you could have cut the bolts off and use the cut off threads just by putting a nut on both ends. Might be helpful info for someone.

That looks like such a blast! Even building it looked like fun because you know how much joy it's going to give you. When the swimming season is over, just tie some floats to the end of the chains so don't have to go digging for them next spring. Great job and I'm a little jealous... Have an awesome week! ~Maarten

@@Vanwives Good plan. But if you don’t want to dig and pull up the cinder blocks, tie nylon ropes to the chains and floats to the other end so you can leave those in the lake and still find them next spring…

WOW!!!! Beautiful job ladies. I'm guessing when it comes to who goes in first, you two will hold hands and jump in together. I suggest on your first day in the water, you "go over" the lake bottom where you jump in and out a bit so you won't be jumping on anything that would hurt your feet. I don't know how clear the water is, but I hope it gives you a good view of the bottom. If not, there are always goggles. Bella and Izzy are going to love the deck. I'm looking forward to other projects there.....and I know you won't forget where you live. Bernie ❤

Angle grinder with a cut off disc to cut the bolts to length once they're done up and you'd have given yourselves a whole bunch of very useful galv threaded rod. And unless those decking boards were basically completely wet (and therefore as swollen as they could be) when you installed them, any decking that's near water like yours should have at least 5mm between boards to allow for expansion and contraction of the boards. No gaps means that they'll cup in no time.
You girls make me so jelly!! I used to work construction, my x & I owned a company. Now I am 54 with injuries from not working smart like y'all, and I miss it SO much!!!

Every day you are at the site that is dry and warm I suggest you open up everything that will open in the cabin (even crawl space door) Fresh & clean warm air is the best way to get the moisture issue under control. I would go as far as setting up a tiny solar power system to power electric fans 24/7 during summer months.
Drying the cabin out is a process. it will take time. But it can be done!
I'm really happy you did not decide to burn it down and start over. That would have been a big waste.

Love how you two get along and both your smiles are infectious. Wish I found someone like you two have. My ex ridiculed me once for using string for a gardening project. It wasn’t until we were in therapy that the therapist told her that gardeners used string all the time.

It’s fantastic! At Minimum, fill half way full with sticks/logs/wood filler, before your good fertile soil/compost/potting mix. There are lots of great gardeners on RUclips to help you with your green thumb. It looks so great, can’t wait to see the next one!

Looks great, but you should have spaced decking with a nail to allow for swelling and not buckling. Such a beautiful property. Epic build❤. That runway strut had me in tears. Too funny❤😂

You are very capable young ladies enjoy your projects. Over here in Australia 🇦🇺 we leave spacer gaps for expansion and contraction for floorboards and screw blocks in front of bowed boards and use wedges. Keep up the great content plenty more great times to come on the docks,floating house

Most decks that float have the ladder on the side and it tips every time you get in and out I hope that hole that you have in the middle is going to be where you're putting your ladder right in the middle work way better and if so you two are very smart gurtles now I have to watch to find out😁😁😁
