    This was helpful. Thank you. I have been riding BMX for a long time, but quarter pipes have just never been my jam. I crashed when I was 17 and broke my nose trying to do a drop in. I am 57 now and the last couple of years I have really been trying to air above coping. For me, I know a lot of what to do, but my fear gets the better of me. I can now do a couple of inches above coping and earlier today I was focusing on hitting both my front and rear tire on the coping. What I was doing was as soon as my front tire hit the coping I would start my pop so the rear wheel was always leaving too soon. So today I actually felt my rear tire hit a couple of times. I feel like a stepper transition has always made it easier. I used to do airs on an 8 foot that went right to vert. I could only ever get about a foot or two out, but I was always scared and thus too stiff.
    I liked a few of the pointers here and I think as my front wheel comes off the coping I need to pull my bars back towards me to get the pop and keep the rear tire on the transition, not much different that when jumping.

    • @orangeblue3531
      @orangeblue3531 2 месяца назад +1

      Everyone who can air really well tell me it's easier to air on big steeper 7-8ft quarters because you don't need to worry about pulling out or casing. They said to just ride into it with confidence and speed while imagining you're doing a big invisible wallride rather than airing. I find that too scary and intimidating to do especially if you have mortgage payments to deal with and a job to get to on Monday. Smaller and more shallow quarters, while less intimidating, require more accuracy and timing. With these, you have to actively keep the bike in the quarter otherwise you'll just fly out onto the deck or case it. The variables that affect this are the steepness of the ramp, your speed, how hard(high) you bunnyhop and the timing of your pop when the back tire bumps the coping. It's way too much to think about. I find the best way is to ride with people that can do it, watch tons of videos in slow motion. Also film yourself, and evaluate your own airs. You can also download an app called Coaches' Eye or Kinovea to compare your attempts with a "proper air" done by a pro. Then try to match the timing and the motions. Geeky but it works.

    • @ShadLife
      @ShadLife 2 месяца назад +1

    Awesome video! Thanks a lot for this one, i'm currently trying to air out and having a weird feeling when i pull the bars to my hips because feels like i will "Jump weird", i'm being able to manage cases without fliping over the bars and they are not frequent, but probably because i'm not popping right out of the quarter.
    My question would be, i should pop on the top like a bunny hop or just pull the bar to my hips? i know that in mellow quarters you need to give a bit of a hop to not flyout but i get confused by it on ramps that have vertical exits.
    The decision to edit the wrong way to do it with the right way following is absolutely awesome (part two).

    • @JoyOfBike
      @JoyOfBike  2 месяца назад +2

      Of course, thank YOU for being here!
      Mellow quarters do require a bit more brute force & pull back as you're doing more work than the ramp, as the ramp gets taller & theres more 'vert' involved, the bike will more naturally follow the radius of the quarter - therefore requiring less pull back unless you're really trying to go UP!
      Pulling the bars back into your hips isn't so much of a pull back as it is almost meeting the bike half way when your torso is perpendicular to the ground, if that makes sense. You're really just letting the bars find your hips; simmilar to our bunny hop video.
      Cheers!
      -Mike

    Loving the bmx content lately on this channel. Any tips for getting the back wheel to hit coping when the coping is a larger radius concrete coping rather than the standard metal coping at the park in this video? At my local park the larger quarters have concrete coping that sticks out more than the metal coping. This seems to make it harder to get that back wheel to touch coping since the front wheel bonk is so aggressive it pushes you out a little further into the quarter

    So....the whole part of bonking BOTH wheels off the coping is what is freaking me out a bit. I have a mini I built that is just under 4' tall, flat to coping height. If I remember right, I think it's a 7-1/2' radius so it's not vert at the top of the transition. Most people tell me you have to "pull out" to avoid casing because it's not steep or vertical. I'm at the point where I bonk the front, but not the rear. I'm thinking of building another quarter a little taller, like 5' or so, so it's a bit steeper and, maybe, with a better run up, I can get the nuts to do it. On the other hand, maybe I should just pad up and do it on what I have. Just hard to session it since it's a half pipe and it's hard to get the speed right coming off the other side into the quarter. Any advice? Does it matter that I'll turn 63 in a few weeks? :D

    • @JoyOfBike
      @JoyOfBike  2 месяца назад +1

      Nice, that's a great radius for that size of ramp!
      The pulling motion is really to help you keep the bike's trajectory in line with the ramps radius, it will also help you not case - paired with a good pump, & LOTS of practice you'll find yourself bumping the coping with both tires. It really helps to film yourself in slow motion so you can see where the back end is coming off & where you're pulling off to adjust accordingly.
      A taller ramp, in my experience, is easier to learn this full commiment bit but it isn't impossible on a 4'!
