It’s so rare to give an Oscar out to a comedic role but when they do, that means It transcended the Genre into something so special, and what an honor. Whoopi was so perfect for this role that any other actress would be inconceivable and the oscar went to the right person .
If you think about it, Oda Mae's lines in the script weren't written to be funny. Another actress could have delivered them serious, and it would have been a darker movie. Whoopi's line delivery and performance is what made the material funny. She was the perfect counter-balance to the dark subject matter otherwise.
