Hey. You ever cross over the double yellow lines while splitting that Carpool and #1? Shadetree made me do it in this video... Is it the end of the world? Will you get a fat ticket if you do? Inquiring minds want to know.
Dunno the rule on splitting over the double yellow, but I do it all the time. I don't cross, just use it as a guideline.

Agreed. I’ve watched Shadetree for a while and he’s always entertaining, sometimes educational but rarely a waste of time.
You talk about the law with the yellow lines but you sir are riding in a car pool lane where it clears shows many times during the video.
That double yellow denotes that you CANNOT cross it because the other side of it is opposite direction traffic. Which was a mistake by CA for putting it right there, which is why they are repainting them to be a double white, which denotes do not cross, but not oncoming traffic. IDK what the specific motorcycle laws are as I don't ride, (i do know lane splitting is legal in CA) I'm a truck driver. I enjoy your vids.... Be safe!!

I’m interested in the double-yellow discussion as well. My current understanding is that it is not legal to cross it while lane filtering. On top of that, if the double-yellow is alike to a wall, wouldn’t this make the HOV lane its own entity, meaning a single lane? And if it’s a single lane, wouldn’t lane filtering not apply, hence making it illegal? (My understanding about lane filtering in CA is that you need to have a minimum of two lanes going in the same direction in order to spit.)

Correct. Here is definitely some grey area here. EVERYONE, including on-duty CHP Motors split the HOV/#1 all the time.
Lane split it all the time and have CHP see me, never had an issue thus far.

Actually Officer Rob, I did got pulled over by CHP once cuz I went on double yellow crossing the HOV line my brother was late for school. And yep cost me a ticket $490 plus traffic school round up bout $500 total. :(

“Motorcyclists are allowed to lane-split/lane-share as long as it is done safely,” Fox said. “If motorcycles are splitting lanes at an unsafe speed, then that would be illegal. If a motorcyclist is crossing the double solid lines, then that would be illegal.”
Now, an otherwise law-obeying motorcyclist might cross the double yellows to get around a large vehicle, such as a bus, and
Fox says those aren’t the riders the CHP is focused on. Rather, officers try to cite the rider who will “cross the lines at any time at unsafe speeds.”
Citations are at the discretion of the officer. The CHP has said in the past that motorcyclists, when lane-splitting, should not go faster than 30 mph, or 10 mph more than other traffic.

Yup. It was more to spur conversation than anything else. I don’t think a lot of riders know or understand both the letter or spirit of the law... if you’re riding safely, and happen to cheat over the double yellow to get around a larger vehicle, you shouldn’t have much to worry about. If you’re farting in and out of the carpool just riding like an ass, then you should be worried.
Or DARTING... either way, farting or darting. They both work autocorrect
Keep on hammering out those videos and you'll hit that 100k in no time!

I'm no cop, however you basically just answered your own question. Its technically a "wall", its a division of lanes so you are technically driving down a one lane road. The law states you can split between two lanes of traffic flowing the same direction. Given the division, you are splitting down the side of a one lane road and thus would be illegal. Slightly different, pre AB51 I was splitting a one lane road and a car moved over to block me. I moved over the most I could to not make contact, went over the solid white line for maybe 2 foot of travel at most a foot into the emergency lane. Basically I just moved over enough to clear my mirrors. Got a ticket for "driving in the shoulder".... :-|
SD Cruiser it’s lans sharing, not “lane splitting”. Too many people confused about this. Your allowed to share the lane with other motorists, as a motorcycle. Has nothing to do with the type of road your on.

"21658.1. (a) For the purposes of this section, “lane splitting” means driving a motorcycle, as defined in Section 400, that has two wheels in contact with the ground, between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, including on both divided and undivided streets, roads, or highways."
California defines it as lane SPLITTING not sharing. It is only legal to SPLIT lanes between "ROWS" of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane. AKA you need two lanes of traffic flowing the same direction to be able to make a legal split. You cannot legally "share" a lane with another vehicle if there is not a 2nd lane going the same direction next to you. So in Officer Rob's case, the road markings indicate a "divisions/wall", as he mentioned in the video, and as such would techincally remove the required 2nd lane needed to legally split.
That is why its called lane SPLITTING and not lane sharing, lane sharing is illegal by your definition and it most defiantly does matter on the type of road.
SD Cruiser has nothing to do with “my state”. I was born and raised in SoCal and grew up riding there. Is this something new?
@@OregonMotorcycle New, well if you count end of 2016 as new, then yes lol It was signed Aug 20th 2016.
In California its actual LAW now, written in the books, that we can split lanes. Before it was a "gray area" and we could do what you were describing and share lanes, any which way we felt like, but it wasn't legal or illegal.
Now that the law was passed the above vehicle code I referenced is what we are legally allowed to do. That means we need at least 2 lanes of travel going the same direction to be able to split between them. If you don't have the two lanes, then you legally cannot share the lane with another vehicle. They also have CHP "Guidelines" that further restrict how we split, but I don't believe guidelines stand up in court.
Of course we still have the old school riders who still split/share how ever the hell they want. I won't say I'm innocent, but I do stay within the legal limits 98% of the time :)
SD Cruiser ok. I thought something had changed but wasn’t sure. I got my MC endorsement over 20 years ago in SoCal and it was called lane sharing back then. The study manual actually taught you how to execute. Wasn’t a grey area when I rode down there. Now we try every year up here to get a lane splitting bill passed but it’ll never happen. People in the PNW hate motorcycles, even the riders up here can’t comprehend it...

Officer Rob; are those 'Gloves' you're wearing issued or personal purchase? Usually, motor officers wear those beige(or black), loose fitting (one finger pull-to-remove)gloves that often fly off in the case of an accident. Did the PD up their game in protective equipment or is that your own good sense at work?
I bought these on my own. Dress for the slide not the ride...
