RIP to the late great Russell Malone--gone far too early, but never to be forgotten. He was one of the best guitarists, and indeed one of the standout musicians of his generation. Part of that was his awesome technical skill, a bigger part was his wonderful musicianship, and part of it was his tremendous humanity, which is evident in every interview & conversation--this one included.
Only seven comments? I regret to say that I never got to see him perform. But I do have some of his recordings. He was a wonderful musician and everything he says here is so well thought out and so right. It seems so wrong that he had to leave us so soon.
Joe Diorio got a call from Howard Robert to replacing him in a show with Anita O day ,Diorio got the sheet music, and in the show Diorio recalled the same thing that Russell said in 9.48, Diorio said he kept simple not to try to be in the way of the singer, at the end of show ,Anita told him "hey Joe you did a good job" the other guy stinks" because Howard Roberts was playing too much ,like if the guitar was the main artist in the show.

so sudden, so young ... rest in peace, dear Russell 🌿
Always appreciate how LeRoy has a rapport with musicians so that these ‘interviews’ become insightful conversations. Nice tribute to a great talent.
