  • OSI layer five is a complex but remarkably interesting layer where protocols like RPC, Winsock and many more exist and run. Layer 5 is about synchronization of data, establishing, maintaining, and ending communications. You will learn about H.245, iSNS, SMB, RTCP, and another layer five protocols. We will explore how Windows 10 implements layer five. We will use tools to view and expose protocols operating at Layer 5. Enjoy learning some new concepts in Layer 5.

Thank you! this was very insightful for me since I've only just started on learning the osi model concepts

So layer 4 is the delivery mechanism i.e. it's going to create 2 numbers on either side of the internet and each side will agree to talk until terminated it doesn't "care" about the data but layer 5 is like an extra delivery / synchronization mechanism that rides layer 4 and does care about the data. Layer 5 specifically deals with data and as a result "user experience". From client/server perspective i.e. its "controllable", since layer 5 is in user space you can write a client server architecture that does very specific things and expects very specific things based on a session behaviour as it's essentially the backend to a layer 7 protocol. Whereas with layer 4 you don't really have a choice beyond some kernel tunables it's just going to do its thing. Which all makes a lot of sense you think about using udp as a transport mechanism.

I love to see folks thinking hard about networking, the brilliant engineers who designed it allow us to carefully look at these protocols and marvel.

Hello Professor Vanderpool. I've got a practical question on Layer 5. If I open Chrome and log in to my RUclips account, and then I open a private browser via Chrome and log in to my friend's RUclips account, then does the Session layer distinguish between data that is sent to and from those two different types of Chrome browser windows? Have a nice day.

Great question, due to the fact that another process in Windows would be opened (private browser) traffic would have to be switched between the two and yes the session layer would know how to send traffic to each process in Windows. The session layer is a multiplexing layer and does this very easily.
