  • When I first caught wind of "Chief Rocka" I knew I wanted to shoot a clip with these guys. I was floored by their command on screen.
This was my second turn with Lords of the Underground.
So, we geared up to shoot this clip in Newark, the groups home base. The locals held us down on this mad sunrise to sunset venture (we used to knock video shoots out in a day).
Rueben, from the label, joined in to create a memorable opening for the clip. He and the group recorded their conversations back at the office for us to use in post.
We used a ton of additional sound fx and ambient sounds to give the appearance of actually being there. So you'll hear the guys climbing the fence, the little boy scream, the record needle touching the vinyl, the paper bag, walking on the steps, etc.
Here's also where I met a young lady named 'Friskie' on the set, standing at a phone booth - she obliged us by being in the video with Doitall during his car performance. Hers was technically the only 'video girl' role. She'd later become a regular on Club MTV (w/Downtown Julie Brown "Wubba Wubba Wubba").
The best part about working with the Lords was that they took direction. The Lords proved themselves an imaginative and creative bunch to share film time with.
    famous line from "Chief Rocka":
"...But they don't understand how I feel about the funk, I walk with the funk, I talk with the funk, I eat with the funk, I sleep with the funk, I live for the funk, I die for the funk. So now what they say when I'm walking up the block - boom-shock-a-locka their goes the Chief Rocka!"
