Tarja told the band she wanted to leave Nightwish, the band has had its ups and downs and Tarja wanted more freedom and independence, the tours were hard on her, she was ill a lot and the guys seemed to have been quite restless on that bus.
Emppu and later Marko said it was the feud between the managements, Nightwish and Tarja's (also her husband), that caused the main rift. Both managements were flawed, to say it nicely, for different reasons.
Marko and Tarja reconciled and he said he understood better her point of view after talking to her. Tuomas in 2008 said that he tried contacting her and that he wished to reestablish a friendship, but that never really led anywhere.

There is also a press *Tarja Turunen press conf (with SUBTITLES) / post NW break up* Tuomas and Tarja know each other since the age of 12 years old, same school, and town, there is video of them in music class they are so young. Tuomas had feelings for Tarja, the love songs that were written in her era you won't see it written again later on, documentaries, interviews, hints, body language that can't be faked, many may disagree but many, including me can see it. You need to see *Ever Dream* from this concert. I think because she did wanted to pursue her solo career, which many singers do, also things changed when she got married and her husband being involved caused tension, there is so much behind that. Everyone keeps forgetting that Tarja joined the band at a young age and the band went big fast, she was a young girl surrounded by a bunch of wild guys, drinking and smoking, she said it was very hard to maintain her voice and health, it was different times. To be fair there is always two sides of the story and no one was actually there to see what really happened on both ends.

There is no full story, nobody knows the FULL story. It is very simple to understand: the band fired the main lead singer, and when a singer of a beloved band leaves, the fans have to suffer (you must have been a fan of them from the begining to understand this, it is impossible now). The fans hated the band for this decision that could be the end of Nightwish. Tuomos had depression because of this and wrote those songs to cope. The songs are wonderful and there is no story you need to know besides that the songs are created from this dark place. No need to dig deeper, the drama is long gone, and you would not understand it anyway if you were not a fan at those times.
I would suggest to NOT read this long gone drama that really has no place right now, both the band and Tarja admited their faults and Tuomas himself said that the letter was a MISTAKE.

I don't know if it's worth reading an open letter at this time, and even less so after recent events. Text of this letter initially seemed exaggerated to me, to put it mildly, and even more so now. Tuomas probably wanted to bury Tarja as a singer and an artist because of his resentment. But I believed and knew that time would put everything in its place. Thing is that letter was signed by all band members and it shows that they are right. But a few years ago Marko left Nightwish and not only left, but also returned his friendship with Tarja. After he apologized to Tarja, I personally have no doubts about "truthfulness" of open letter. Not only Tarja forgave him, but now they are recording new songs together and going on tour. And Tuomas himself has long ago recognized this open letter as a mistake.

Personally I can't make comparisons between Tarja and Floor, each of the two has their own style and vocal ability. I prefer some songs sung by Tarja, others by Floor and for me it's absurd to say that one is better than the other. Among other things, Floor and Tarja are friends, they talk to each other every now and then. A few years ago, near Christmas, they broadcast their chat live on Instagram. ruclips.net/video/rdF1AdCOxBA/видео.htmlsi=Kd8icPrOPB7e1UFv

Miss Lanae, NW Army Member, Outpost Eatonville reporting in. I think that it is safe to say that you have captured the hearts of the Nightwish Army with your reactions to our beloved band. As I mentioned before, those of us who follow new reactors to NW, we tend to relive our own first emotions through their reactions. You can not hide what your journey has taken you through, AND WE HAVE BEEN AND STILL ARE RIGHT THERE WITH YOU feeling it just as much as you are! When you did your previous two reactions from this End Of An Era concert, I, as a relative noob, learned soooo much from the comments regarding Tarja and her start with NW. I sometimes get bits and snags here and there regarding NW history in the comments found to other NW reactors but by far I am learning sooo much more about early NW through the comments on your channel. (My strongest gratitude to the senior members of our NW Army!). BTW, there is a second version of Sancta Terra featuring Miss Floor but it is slightly different and has lyrics (Closed Captions if I recall correctly) Please keep being you, and again, welcome to our family.😊

    Thank you! Amazing song!
When you do the open letter remember that's just one side, the guys' side. But, yes, Tarja did also write her own response and that's her side. But in the end we, as fans can't know 100% what happened and what's true. So just keep that in mind and don't take those letters too seriously. Also, both of them were written at emotional times. There is also a press conference that Tarja did some time after her firing where she was answering to some questions.
Poet and the Pendulum is said to be about how Tuomas felt when Tarja was fired and all of his depression. Also Nightwish song Bye Bye Beautiful is rumoured to be about Tarja. A song called Master Passion Greed is rumoured to be about Tarja's husband/manager.
As a response (also rumoured) Tarja wrote Enough. Tarja also wrore a song called Diva and only recently she revealed that that song is about what she went through with Nightwish. Also, the song's name is a nod to the open letter.
(I recommend hearing those songs from Tarja too. There is amazing live performance of Diva from a concert called Circus life, it's also more recent. It's from 2020)
But very important thing to add, this is all past. All of them have moved on. Tarja is friends with Floor and recently became friends with Marko again. Now she is touring with Marko and they released a duet together, called Left On Mars.

You like bands history so here is two clips from their book - How they started to work with Pip Williams, a couple of years before this concert and Dark Chest of Wonders Backstory.
    -----
From the very start, Tuomas had a strong feeling that Once had to have an orchestra, come what ever may. After finishing the recording of backing tracks, the process continued in London with the legendary producer Pip Williams at the helm. Known for his work for the likes Status Quo and Uriah Heep, Williams was responsible for the orchestrations on the album.
When the Nightwish guys heard what orchestra they would be working with, their jaws hit the floor. "As Ewo and I traveled to London at the end of November to meet Pip Williams, we had no clue about the orchestra he'd gotten for us", Tuomas says. "The only thing we knew was that Williams himself would do the arrangements and that through his connections, he would hook us up with an orchestra and a choir. The first time we visited Phoenix Sound Studio, Rick Wakeman (the keyboard player of the legendary progressive rock band Yes) opened the door for us. That's when we realized we're onto something big. As we were having coffee in the studio, Pip dropped the bomb: the orchestra in question had played on The Lord of the Rings, as well as on many other Hollywood soundtracks - all recorded in this studio!"
It seems that Pip Williams wanted only the best for a band he held in great respect. "I have followed the band for some time, and it's been interesting to see how they have developed. Of course Rock bands like Deep Purple have previously used orchestras, but I really feel that Nightwish have combined the best of both worlds most successfully. They are a classic Metal band with strong classical and movie-score influences in their music."
"It was important for me that it would not be just about over-dubbing a few orchestral parts on top of a Rock band", Williams continues. "Tuomas' compositions were brilliant also in the sense that choir and orchestra could be added naturally, so that they don't sound pretentious or contrived. This is of utmost importance. The songs must be structured so as to allow the orchestra enough space. In the end, the results were quite emotive. Also, let us not forget just how good all the musicians in Nightwish are. They are perfectly sympathetic to Tuomas' vision. And Tarja's (1st lead singer) wonderful voice has done the songs great justice."
Williams knew his orchestra well. "I have worked with most of the players on different sessions for many years. Gavin Wright is a sensitive and authoritative orchestra leader, and together with Isobel Griffiths, the orchestral contractor, we were able to secure just the right musicians for each song. Anthony Pleeth, who has the lead cellist and played solo cello on 'Kuolema tekee taiteilijan', is one such example. These guys have done many, many big movie scores, as have the wonderful Metro Voices choir, and I thought this project required the kind of grandiose performance one would find on movie soundtracks by, say, Howard Shore."
Tuomas could not have been more excited about the situation. "Using the orchestra was an earthshaking experience. I only had to lie on the studio couch for two days, listening to these amazingly talented people. During the first takes, someone said into the mike, 'Are these guys really serious?'. When we began 'Ghost Love Score', a positive kind of bewilderment took over the orchestra. That, as well as 'Dark Chest of Wonders', were the first ones we recorded."
Williams was equally happy with his orchestra. "These musicians are such brilliant sight readers that it wasn't necessary to do more than a couple of rehearsals. Then we'd have a take or two of each song. It all went very smoothly. After the takes, I would check that Tuomas was happy, and then we would move on. If there was anything he wanted changed, it would be dealt with in a very short time. I must say, however, that we had prepared very well - I had been constantly on the phone with Tuomas when I was writing the arrangements. Yes, I ended up making a huge phone bill! But the groundwork paid off, as only a few small alterations were necessary."
Tuomas and Pip Williams immediately hit it off on a personal level. "Tuomas is sensitive, caring, very observant - he's what the English call a musical sponge", Williams commends. "It means he is always willing to try new ideas and absorbs the musical influences around him like a sponge. Tuomas always wants to learn more about music, its origins and sound. He has very firm ideas of what he is trying to achieve, but he also leaves space for those working with him to express themselves. He is humble, appreciative and approachable, one of the most talented musicians or composers I have ever worked with. I really think he would make an original and effective movie score composer, and I definetely want to collaborate with Tuomas again in the future - in fact, we're already talking about the next venture. I would also love to collaborate with him on a movie score at some point."
"Many times the players would come into the control room afterwards to listen to the takes, and according to Pip, that's something that doesn't happen very often," Tuomas says. "They're usually not that interested - they just do their job and leave, but now they actually listened to the songs. At the end of the last day, as I went down to thank the orchestra, they started applauding, standing up from their seats. It was one of those great moments in life."
According to Williams, a Pop or Rock artist rarely receives a standing ovation. "The musicians respected the quality of the songs and the challenge of playing such intricate and well structured music. You must remember that these guys also do simple pop sessions, songs that are very easy to play. With Nightwish, they were able to play stuff that was often as demanding as many of the classical pieces they had trained on. This was so much more than just simple 3-chord songs in 4/4 time. And let's not forget that they also had great respect for people that were prepared to take such a huge musical and financial risk, all for the sake of art! Remember, these were very expensive sessions. I'm very satisfied with my own reward for the arrangements, too."
"There is alwas a degree of compromise when mixing a Metal band with a large orchestra, as it's such a huge sound, but all in all, I'm really pleased with the end result", Pip reflects. "The main thing is that we have established a great identity with Nightwish and the orchestra, and our cooperation could be even better in the future. Seriously, Once is one of the most enjoyable projects in my career, and I've done this for 35 years!"

The rest of the Nighwish Famiglia had also learned to trust Tuomas' visions. "The band understands that the final versions sound nothing like the demos", Tuomas says. "I had to try and make them hear an orchestra and vocals here, a choir there, in order to convince them that it will sound good in the end. And no one ever said anything against it."
"Tuomas can hear the kettledrums and choirs and orchestras in his head, but we can only hear the keyboards and the rhythm", Jukka laughs. "Although he tries to explain all those things, you really can't figure out what the song will sound like in the end. But you can't object, either. When we first went through the songs, I felt like there was no hit material on the album. Even 'Nemo' didn't catch me at first.
Marco was initially completely dumbfounded by Tuomas' plans. "I often had to ask Tuomas what the hell is going on in the song", Marco laughs. "Like, 'Is this where the vocals will be? Is this the chorus?' I obviously needed some information about the backing tracks as well, to know where I could let it rip, and I often wondered would there even be room for anything else - like, 'How much stuff are you still going to layer on top of this?!" I was still feeling skeptical while we were doing the demo version of 'Dark Chest of Wonders', and I really didn't get the track until I heard the finished version. On the demo, Tarja's new singing style was still at a try-out phase, so you couldn't really hear the power in the song. But after proper production, the track changed quite radically and you could hear the point."
Tero (engineering, producer since 1997) was another dissident not always convinced by Tuomas' ideas. "I was so wrong about 'Dark Chest of Wonders'", he admits. "I hated that song and I even suggested It'd be left out altogether, partly because the original lyrics had magic wands and stuff like that in them, but also because it sounded really messy. But once we got it on tape, I realized it sounded so good that it should be the opening track. I guess I was initially under the wrong impression that on this album, the band sort of...grows up."

They are both the best they can be... and they both keep getting better and have done excellent at spreading the love for metal.
So, anyway, if you want to hear what the band had done with the song by the time of Wacken, check out the 2013 version with Floor.
The orchestration is fuller and much more up-front in the mix.
AND you get that 'opening song of the concert'-vibe because, well, it IS the opening song.
I won't try to tell a woman to not dig up dirt from the past (I grew up with 3 sisters... me, the only boy)
    So, you-do-you.
I probably won't watch as I don't need to re-live that for the 30th time (sometimes I get through the P&P without thinking about it... sometimes.)
Thank you for posting the link to the original songs.
It is so important to directly support the bands, whether the music is 20 minutes-new or 20 years-old.
Keep your chin up and your brain engaged.

The "main problem" was probably that Tarja did not see herself as a rock singer. She had already sung at an opera festival and represented Finland musically in South America. She wanted to do more than just rock music. But Nightwish's success did not allow this. This meant that the break was inevitable. Tuomas tried to exploit the success in the mainstream by hiring a pop singer next. In retrospect, Anette was the wrong one. Of the applicants, only one was successful without Nightwish and the band rejected her because of inexperience:
NIGHTWISH - Lead Vocalist Candidates in 2006
AMARANTHE - Archangel (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
Floor, on the other hand, had been a metal fan since she was a teenager and there was never any question about what her priority is.

Funny that Anette's albums were more commercially successful for so long.. so much for "wrong"! They would have kept her longer if her health and off-stage activities fitted their style better. Tuomas did consider Floor but he did not want to break up her band at the time. Elize Ryd (Amaranthe, "The Denver Debalce") did a good version of Nemo when trying to join Nightwish too.

Hans Zimmer and "Disney" were Tuomas' role models back then and he basically made the same songs as today. They are just more complicated and longer today.
For Floor, growls were always only a small part of her options. Most of the songs in ReVamp are without growls. In Nightwish she also uses growls, but usually only occasionally. Growls were and are not a consistent stylistic device for Floor.
Anette sang the songs less complexly than Tarja or Floor. She is technically much worse, which is why she is such a disaster live. In Perfume, Anette would fail because of the little things that Floor incorporates. Floor sings the chorus very emphatically and I don't think Anette can get it that precise.

Floor has had her share of tough years : After Forever never reached the kind of popularity that Nightwish, WT or Epica, the band ceased to exist right after releasing on of their greatest abum, due ot Sander's health issues. Then Floor created her own band in 2008 but being the lead singer, the leader and the face of her band was toomuch for her shoulders and in 2011 she had to stop touring for about her year due to a burn-out. So when she joined Nightwish, she knew how things can turn-out in an instant, she had experienced it and that kept her from letting success overwhelm her and inflate her ego.

I love Nightwish - loved them then, love them now, and all 3 singers have their strengths (though Floor's versatility and range put her in a league of her own, whether with Nightwish, or After Forever, or solo). I've read through quite a few comments around the issues that led to Tarja's departure, but I'm surprised not to see more mention of the role played by Tarja's husband at the time - he was a weird Svengali-like figure, a real control freak, who tried to steer her artistic development, sat in on every interview she gave (and cut them off if he didn't like the way they went) - I have to wonder if she may have still been with them without his input damaging her relationship with Tuomas and the others.
One of the big music magazines of the time (maybe Classic Rock, maybe Kerrang! Can't remember) ran a big article about NW and Tarja around the time of the 'End of an Era' gig, and painted the husband as an absolute villain.

To cut a long story short; she refused to rehearse or travel with the rest of the band, wanted more money and told them she was leaving after the next album anyway. Things reached breaking point and the whole band wanted her gone, but Tuomas took most of the blame as it's his band. They could've gone about things in a better way, but Tuomas hates confrontation.

    • @vogel2280
      @vogel2280 2 месяца назад +8

Now you're cutting it too short.
Tarja HATED with living on a tour bus. It was fine for a couple of months, but to spend 18 months on a f*cking bus where everybody is partying, but you can't join in because you need to safe your voice...It just was not how Tarja wanted to spend her life.
And if you're not happy, you're gong to say stuff like "I'm not getting paid enough for this shit". So Tarja suggested they would do fewer performances in larger stadiums and they should fly-in and fly-out. But for the rest of the band partying on the tour bus was exactly what they wanted, so they did not want to make changes at all.
Then Tarja decided SHE would leave the band...but she was not in a hurry to go. She would do 2 more tours with the band and fly-in, fly-out whenever possible....anything to avoid being on that bus...
During the first tour the band found out that travelling separately was not working out for them at all. Tarja wasn't there for promo-activities, rehearsals and meetings. And most important, when the band decided the tour could be extended for 6 months without even asking Tarja (she wasn't there at the band meeting...on the tour bus), Tarja got furious and she tried to have those additional shows cancelled. The band decided they were not going to do this for a second tour. Tarja needed to go!

If you want to know more, I saw that Tarja's press conference was just translated to English (as a whole). Would also make a good reaction series!
But to me, it seems that there was a lot of problems in the band and the biggest issue was them not talking to each other and bad management. People often say that Tarja is the problem and often refer to the Mape Ollila's book but it was written so, that Tarja was interviewed before her departure from the band but again, the guys knew she is going to leave. Feels a bit unfair that guys are only trashing Tarja and she didn't get the chance to tell her side of the story. Media has also favored this "Tarja was a diva" route as they want drama.
I have never seen Tarja say anything bad of the other Nightwish's members. Even in the press conference, she is being so graceful and trying to remember all good things. I just don't buy that Tarja would have been the only trouble. And well, how they decided to handle things with a letter... HORRIBLE, seriously.

This one and GLS are nice songs to contrast Floor and Tarja (I did not say compare because that might suggest there is a ranking). Some of the things Floor does (and gets applauded for) were also done by Tarja. More than I sometimes realize. I am more of a Floor fan because I like the way she became part of the band, whereas Tarja and Anette were more the singers in the band. As partly a spoiler to the letters: at the rehearsals for EFMB Floor turned up and contributed to the early phases of shaping the music. For the previous albums apparently the music was finished by the musicians and then the vocals were added. Another reactor, Doug Helvering, when introducing Nightwish says 'with Floor on vocals'. I think that is spot on. Floor plays the vocal chords. As such she is one of the musicians and not the singer. That may be subtle, but I think it played a role in the breakup.

I agree with what I just read. I have never liked the bickering either and I stopped commenting for a while, but I think it’s finally time that I just get this out into the open even though it doesn’t matter lol but Tarja does absolutely nothing for me. Does she have a nice voice yes but the problem is I discovered floor. It’s very hard to go from floor to Tarja…..easier to go from Tarja to Floor……. I really respect the fans and the Nightwish army that have been there since the beginning but after listening to a ton of stuff, and I am now a part of the Nightwish army I can say that Tarja is NOT metal……. I don’t think she fits a lot of the music that night which plays I’m glad to see that she’s thriving on her own and now she’s doing some stuff with Marco, which is great, but I will always say she does nothing for me. Her voice stays in the same register most of the time, a lot of people love that I do not get very bored with her singing, but that’s just me but I’m not gonna throw her under the bus. I’m very happy that she is successful right now.

I have to add a second comment: Family members quarrel but love each other nonetheless. Each and every member that has performed for Nightwish has brought their unique talents and abilities. We love them for this. Regarding NW singers, it is arguable that Miss Floor stands on the shoulders of giants. Adding Miss Annette and Miss Floor, Miss Tarja's shoulders must be sore indeed! Looking through your other reactions, I think that you might like hearing Floor's husband's band Sabaton. Please do "No Bullets Fly", (the animated version). It is based on a true story, watch it till the end and be sure to have your tissues close at hand. If you like that song, do Christmas Truce next. (The NW Army will correct me if I am wrong but I hear that Miss Floor has a vocal cameo in that one.)😊

Hi Lenea. This song is the opening song at the Wacken 2013 concert. I highly recommend you watch the version with Floor. Then you can hear the difference. As I have written before. Tarja is great but she can only do opera. Annette was more the pop queen of Nightwish. She struggled with many vocal styles. With Floor, perfectionism came into the band. She can do opera, she has an unbelievable range, her belting is awesome and if you listen to her growl (Re Vamp with Disdain in Graspop 2010) then I'll tell you what I'm talking about. I have to be honest, I personally don't like Tarja anymore. Too much has gone before and the fame has unfortunately gone to her head. Luckily for Nightwish, because Floor flew out of the sky in a roundabout way (watch the Floor Jansen story on You Tube, there you can find out everything about her life. It's in German, but with English subtitles). As I said, you have to listen to all 3 songs you've heard from Tarja with Floor. There is much more power and above all much more soul. LG from Germany

Nightwish had no other option than fire Tarja. She had public announced that she was leaving the band, because it could not fullfill her ambitions - and that's fair enough.
During 2004/2005 she skipped rehearsals to rehearse on her solo career. She wouldn't go touring in the US because there were no money in it - and she wanted a bigger part of the income on the next revord. In short, Tarja had other priorities - therefore the band had no other option than fire her - or disband.
They had outgrown each other - and this is completely ok.
But the breaking up was uggly and handled poorly and childish by all the involved parts. Completely stupid to do everything in public - from Tarja's announcement of leaving and til the open letters. That's simply un-professionel.
Nightwish had learned the lesson later on when Anette was fired.

    • @karadenizin-kizi
      @karadenizin-kizi 2 месяца назад

she didn't announce it to the public, she only told the band about her intentions, letting them know in advance. Also while reading the biography, it seems that a lot of management issues went over her head - she knew only what her husband told her and he had his own truth and the rest of the band only heard what their management told them, and that was the main reason for the conflict.
But Tarja wanted to leave at some point anyway, I believe her when she says that they created beautiful music together but she always wanted to be able to have more time for her classical projects, classical music is her first love and Nightwish was a full time job.

  • @vogel2280

Why they fired Tarja? Because Tarja had already given her resignation, so it was just a matter of time. She was no longer committed to the band. Tarja had good reason to quit. The band wanted to spend the rest of their lives on a tour bus, but Tarja HATED the tour bus. Especially because the roadies were taking care of the bands instruments, but Tarja had to take care of her voice herself. Drinking, smoking, loud people on a bus, having fun, but you can never join in, because you need to take of your voice... I can understand how that is no fun!
With her notice they agreed to do 2 more tours together. Tarja would fly-in and fly-out whenever possible and preferably not spend one minute on the bus. This also meant Tarja missed promotional activities, rehearsals and important band meetings....like the one in which the band agreed to extend the tour by six months. Tarja was furious that the band made such a decision without even asking her. She tried to have the sold out concerts cancelled....and that was the final straw.

Wishmaster would have been a great pick from this concert But during some of the songs in this concert, you can see the despair and sadness in Tuomas’s eyes, face and gestures. He knows, and all the other members too. And Tarja looks so happy, even though she’s sick and in fever. Some songs are even painful to watch. But still, it’s a great show altogether.
