I run a vintage hifi workshop so not entirely newbie, but have never worked on a X-10 before. Same problem, and got it up and running only by watching your video. Thank´s a lot for sharing!
I've got a Teac X-10R that has precisely the same symptoms as yours. I watched a few other videos here on refurbishing, or changing the Capstan belt on an X-10R, none provided any useful instruction, and one nearly put me into a coma it was so tedious.... So it was a big relief to find your RUclips channel! You don't just yak yak yak and pretend to know what you're doing - you actually DO know what you're doing, and you go above and beyond to explain not only the "How to's", but explain WHY you should do this or that, what to look out for.... etc. Excellent! Thank you!
Thank you, thank you!!! This is the best description that I have seen on the placement of the capstan reversing washers.
The best explanation of that wacky Teac transport. Also great technique removing hard grease. Now you know why pro reel machines use no belt
.
This was a great help for re-belting, but you don't need to remove the transport to clean/relube capstan pinchers. The metal bar below the tape heads is all that needs to be taken off in order to remove the pinch wheels.
If you get this message can you help me out on the reassembly of the levers after lubricating? For some reason even after cleaning, etc., the pinch rollers won't engage the capstans. I can push them up, but they won't go by themselves. See my comment above. Thanks!
Bought Teak X1000R New in 70,s it worked fantastic. know it has the same problem you show in your video .
Great video and thanks for sharing. I have a X-7R with the same problem.
Excellent video, but what is the brand/model of the gaz heater that you use ???
it seems very difficult to find something similar and small on Aliexpress or on the web...
Thank you very much for your reply,
I just purchased one of these and found out that one of the magnets was lose in one of the motors. i am pretty new, learning but after tearing it down to get the motor out, reglued the magnet to the housing, new belts, cleaned out all old grease and lubricated and oiled as designed, went to play it, and it tries to play but both forward and reverse buttons it only plays reverse. it quickly starts and stops as the tension rollers quickly go slack and it just stops. it was working before, just make a lot of noise due to the motor. i know it is something i did, just not sure where to start. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. thank. Paul
Very informative. Help me fixed mine.Thank you
I’d like to get my X-10R serviced by you. Is your shop near the Washington DC area? I also have a malfunctioning dbx 224 that needs repair.
Do u take in units. I’ve done all services. But not recording in either direction. Also only play in rev : tape tracks off pinch roller in forward. Belts not moving
We're not using the device for few days...but now it's all working except the motor... what's problem in the motor?
Both my side tensioners had no washers. The capstone ones had inner and otter. Where do I get 4? Also the felts you mentioned replacing? Thx
Nice video, but you didn't show how actually you took out the transport mechanism and how you put it back, which Is exactly what I needed to see.
I going to do another video on these as have a few reel to reel decks waiting servicing that I need to get to one being this model.
@@thetechgenie7374 thank you I have a X10, no auto reverse. It Is working but I have to push the pinch roller up to make It work. I know I have to do what you fid, but I was interested in knowing whether the transport mechanism comes out from behind or from the front of the machine
Hello I have a teac X10R I have replaced the capstan belt lubricated all moving parts and it was work fine until yesterday, now the machine has a problem with the monitor button when it is playing from the reel there is some (very little) output playing through you have to turn it all the way up and there is a lot of static also you can hear music playing from the tape when it is playing from the source and its the same when playing from the source
Could you advise me on what’s wrong as I’m new to this and it’s really frustrating
Imagine! Good info, thanks!
Nice video! Which state/area are you located in?
Rocky boaboa does youtube, ADR|IENNNEE!!!! :D PS you are only 80% right on most stuff but i congratulate you young man for being 80% correct as most are at 10% on youtube these days ;) i used to rebuild pro machines in my sleep and was at one point back in the day a head engineer in amplification for bang and olufsen thru the 80s and early 90s so piss off anyone else lol ;)
I had an X-10 and sold it 30 years ago. So why are people still using a reel to reel deck ?
I still have reels that I listen to.
Everything is working but not motor is working...can u please help ??
How can i send my unit to you for maintenance?
Is the X-7R basically the same transport? Mine works but I did have to live the pinch roller pivot points that raise and lower. Works fine but if I keep this I may want to replace the capstan drive belt. Also, the take up motor is sluggish at rewind when it beats the end of a reel. Comments appreciated! Appreciate your thoroughness!

Great explaination.
Thanks for the video.
at 16:35. What do you use for replacement felts?
sorry at 16:25
Can you tell my for what reason the belt moves up and down? My technician obvious forgot the spacers (belt is firm on one spot) is there any harm in that?
@Peter van Leeuwen The belt has to move "up and down" because each capstan turns at a slightly different speed in order to provide the correct tape tension between the pinch rollers, for proper tape-to-head contact. In the forward direction, the right hand capstan turns slightly faster than the left hand capstan; and in the reverse direction, the left hand capstan turns slightly faster than the right hand capstan. This is accomplished by moving the capstan belt to different areas of the pulleys, as each pulley has a slightly different (BUT MIRRORED) circumference in each direction. This called a " closed-loop-dual-capstan"
Ho do I reach you and make and send you my Teac X10? Thanks.
Greetings, I am looking for the diagram of the Presto PB17F, maybe you can help me. If you know anything about this let me know, I will appreciate it.
When he does a giant jump cut and cuts out every useful piece of information
Mam to samo. Załóż trochę WD40 na tę pivot i nie potrzebujesz heating
Good through job 👍🌷
I have four Teac Reel to Reels and love them all. I just got a Teac X-3R that has been sitting for about 5 years. put new belt on cleaned all of the switches and pots with Deoxit, the fast forward and reveres work great but the main drive motor will not power up. Help I want to get this baby going
Could be capstan motor needs rebuilt, or driver is bad, I seen them go bad on these.
Look @ the buttons next to the tape-counter..... you have pushed-in "REVERSE-PLAY"...????
Try-out to push in the other... May be thats the Answer
This doesnt even Show How to remove the cover, etc.
