My brother owned a Sugar Glider for a long time. He named her Channee and she was adorable. He got her really cheap because she was a single birth and the breeder was trying to get rid of her because you're not supposed to have just one. But she was a super happy little thing that everybody loved and she was very sociable.
You missed the best part about John Quincy Adams's alligator: It was given to him by the Marquis de Lafayette! Someone gave it to him when his "comeback tour" of the US took him to--wait for it--Florida.
I remember a case of a girl from one of my classes in college coming in one day with an unusual bulge in her shirt. At some point I looked over to ask her about it and saw 2 sugar gliders sticking their heads out of the pouch she had been hiding them in. Very cute. Funny though, bearded dragons are on this list but not tarantulas. I'm rather happy for the exclusion, but I'd pet arachnids would be worth noting, (if my equivalent of your "people I avoid.")
I saw a person walking their pig in Boston a few weeks ago. I know that pigs make good pets, but I just don't expect a major city to be the best place to keep one.
When referring to animals, the term "domesticated", implies a lineage of selective breeding these are often tamer than their wild forebears. Not merely 'tamed' wild animals kept as pets.
my grandfather had a pet squirrel that was awesome! they tried to rehabilitate and return him to the wild but he kept coming back, so he had free range to go in and out like a cat. he enjoyed parties and would come back to jump between everyone's shoulders. he liked my hair and that terrified me as a kid.
Phillix Maxwell, my wife had one. It loved her. It hated everyone else. It would jump on me just to bite me and then scamper onto my back so I couldn’t get him off. It terrified me as an adult. He lives outside now.
List includes pigs, which have been domesticated and come in many different breeds, but fails to mention tegus, which are exceptionally affectionate reptiles but are nonetheless giant in adult size >_> 'Kay.
Listed chickens a couple of times too, which are also absolutely domesticated. Sure, pigs and chickens are more frequently kept as livestock than pets, but they're domesticated nonetheless.
Erm. One of my friends has a pet chinchilla, another friend has a pet hedgehog, another one of my friends has the nickname 'Moose', another is getting a pet goat, and two of my friends have 'pet' chickens and roosters. Also, one of my cousins (who lives in my neighborhood) has a pet bearded dragon. I'm not making this up, I swear.
My dad had a descented skunk as a pet when he was a kid. Apparently they're like flatish cats. You just have to remember to get the scent gland removed, or have a large supply of tomato juice on hand.
They sell chinchillas at the pet store in my town. They even have oversized hamster balls they can use. And cute little plastic igloos they can use too
Thanks for the tip, Those are both beautiful dogs WOW.I do have a Siberian Husky and a German Sheppard cross at the moment and I think that's enough for now but maybe one day :)
Firstly as a New Zealander, thanks for recognising that we exist. Secondly, just found out that Karen/Carol's pet ocelot, Babou in Archer is totally based on Salvador Dail's
yes. some of us Americans also know you are affectionately known as ''kiwis''. Cheers. ps i personally love your country for providing the beautiful landscapes seen in the lord of the rings movies.
"leathery" usually refers to something has the same characteristics as object made with leather. So even though leather were made from skin and we also have skin, it's not the same.
Thanks for taking the time to look that up! I didn't realize that there was another type. I thought the other one may have been its cousin, a degu. I suppose only the lanigera are more commonly kept as household pets.
Squirrels were apparently popular house pets from about 1900 to the 1950s. Old magazines and newspapers have a lot of pictures of them. In many of these pictures, the squirrels wear squirrel-sized clothes. That’s the kind of thing that keeps me awake at night.
#4 My ex-girlfriend's sister had 3 sugar gliders, and they were the most adorable little critters I've ever seen. They were also really messy, they fling their food all over the place, so there was always half-eaten meal worms and chunks of fruit on the table where she kept their cage.
Lots of these animals are at the camp I go to in Missouri, Cub Creek. They have lots of different animals, like cats and snakes, but they specialize in the exotic.
Bearded Dragona are actual awesome pets..I've got one that I've had for a year now(since the beardie was born) and their extremely calm and nice if you hold them enough. They have great personalities as well.
Fun fact: A family from South Africa moved into my Texan, suburban neighborhood about a decade ago. They brought with them from Africa 3 or so peacocks that they kept as pets in their backyards. The family eventually moved away, leaving the peacocks. Now there are around 50 peacocks that live in my neighborhood. You occasionally see them on the street, roofs, or in your backyard.
I feel I need to post here, that I had a pet Scorpion once. His name was Wesley, and he was great! It was so much fun watching him eat live crickets (especially when they came to half way through), and I patted him with a pencil. :)
My husband's grandmother has owned several skunks (the scent glands were removed), and they used a litterbox. They were actually kind of sweet. Said grandmother's ex-husband also owned a flying squirrel, but it hated everyone but him. It's worth pointing out that this grandmother owned a petting farm when hubby was little (she's also kind of a crazy person...). Apparently prairie dogs are awesome, but bad. Hubby also found out the hard way that ferrets are a guinea pig's natural predator.
Sugar gliders are awesome little pets. A friend of mine had a pair of sugar gliders some time ago and set up a room for them with all kinds of things to jump and glide around on. The male was somewhat of a biter while the female was not, but they were both pretty friendly otherwise. They liked to jump on people, and it was easy to get startled if you weren't prepared for it or used to them.
I know this is splitting hairs but technically pigs, chickens and lamas are domesticated animals much like horses, sheep, cows. They are normally raised as farm animals but without human intervention they would not be the animals they are now. I do love you and your brother's shows it is so nice to have educational things to watch.
That's a very interesting looking chinchilla. Is that what wild chinchillas look like? My sister had one and he was much more round in shape and maybe smaller. The most exotic pet we owned growing up was a Burmese python. We got her as a baby of course, and had to give her away when she got too big. For people who may not know, Burmese pythons can get up to 20 feet long, they primarily live in Africa (maybe Burma, someone correct me on that), and they have been known to snatch antelopes out of the air and eat them whole (antlers and all). So I would only recommend owning one if you have a professional zoo or sanctuary.
NinjaInConverse "they have been known to snatch antelopes out of the air" I was not aware that antelopes could fly. Wow, you learn something new every day if you don't watch out!
That was definitely not a chinchilla. It's actually a cousin of chinchillas known as a Viscacha(not sure if I spelled that right). They're bigger and more bunny looking. :)
Omg NZ! Haha love that you guys identified out weird patriotism when being mentioned. For a small country with just over 4mil. people, it's always great to get a mention!
Aww, he didn't mention Winnie, the black bear that became the real-life inspiration for Winnie the Pooh. She was apparently really friendly. Also, I've been wondering about red pandas - has anyone ever domesticated (or "domesticated") any?
Fun fact: A family from South Africa moved into my Texan, suburban neighborhood about a decade ago. They brought with them 3 or so peacocks that they kept at pets in their backyard. Josephine Baker, 1920s American-born French actor, singer, and dancer, owned a pet cheetah which would accompany her on stage for her shows. Also, this cheetah, Chiquita, wore a diamond collar. Josephine Baker is the best.
I've had pet skunks, and they are amazing. They are incredibly docile, snuggly, and lovable. Sort of like having a dog-cat hybrid, only they don't scratch your furniture and pee on everything! I think something that should be noted in this video is that most of the animals in the list are exotics, and you have to have a government-issued permit in order to so much as legally purchase them (this includes skunks).
Bit sad to not see leopard geckos on the list. They're about as unusual as bearded dragons and they're pretty much exactly the same as wild geckos. Adorable tiny dinosaurs.
He mentioned pigs without putting a quarter in the staff pork hop party fund
I know that bothered me too
yep, should have a 50c penalty.
Émile Courchesne it’s 2020 and I’m still not over this smh
OMG you know we exist! PS totally true. We were mentioned in QI and I was like "OMG! Alan Davies know's I exist ^.^"
To be fair, given that it was Alan Davies, it's entirely possible he was mistaking you for Australia. :)
The chinchilla that you showed was actually a viscacha.
My brother owned a Sugar Glider for a long time. He named her Channee and she was adorable. He got her really cheap because she was a single birth and the breeder was trying to get rid of her because you're not supposed to have just one.

Imagine if instead of a chinchilla, Tom Felton owned a FERRET
O.O Omg that would make me soo happy!!
Sabrina Simms see, remember the draco ferret scene where he was transfigured and bounced up and down in the form of a ferret?
That's why it would make me happy! :)
Chinchillas are eaten in a South American country instead of used as pets.
Bethany Francia They're eaten everywhere. Like pigs. Just very rarely in Europe and North America.
I remember a case of a girl from one of my classes in college coming in one day with an unusual bulge in her shirt.

My neighbor used to have a pet camel spider. It would regularly escape from its cage and find its way into my house, hence the words "used to".
I remember Trading Spaces! That was actually a really good show.
you forgot to put a coin in the piggy bank when you mentioned pig... Twice.
I can’t be the only one that loves these videos when I’m drinking. Just slow down a little bit. Literally, just a little. LOL
Holy shit, now I know why in Archer they named the ocelot Baboo
I really like this guy, his manner makes me want to listen and pay attention, he’s make a great teacher
I saw a person walking their pig in Boston a few weeks ago. I know that pigs make good pets, but I just don't expect a major city to be the best place to keep one.
Well, pigs used to be kept in cities to eat up food scraps and other stuff, keeping the city clean. Maybe someone is keeping up the tradition?
A pig makes a good pet if you live on a farm, not a city apartment or townhouse.
John, you give education that comedic feel its been lacking. Love all the episodes!
When referring to animals, the term "domesticated", implies a lineage of selective breeding these are often tamer than their wild forebears. Not merely 'tamed' wild animals kept as pets.
Love the mosaic! That looks amazing
Whoa whoa! California is not the Florida of the west.......now Arizona that's the dry cranky Florida of the west
Oranges, heat, weird people, strange happenings.
Yep.
I'm sorry, but for everyone outside the US it looks like the same
agustin venegas do you mean everyone who cant can racist to Americans
aaron jamal "cant can racist"? i'm sorry, i'm not getting you
agustin venegas sorry about that, what i was trying to say was " don't be racist to Americans" (late in the night)

OMG New Zealand got mentioned!
My high school ecology class kept a baby gator as a class of sorts. We would walk him around campus with a leather leash we made. He was so adorable.
I came across this video and immediately hoped it would acknowledge my pet chinchilla. Did not disappoint! :D

I was about to do the New Zealand comment thing, but then you had to call me out on it.....
whenever john says mental-floss I often hear him say ''thanks for watching menopause!"
YOU SAID PIG CAN YOU PUT A COIN IN THE STAFF PORKCHOP PARTY FUND!
When John brought up the notion of Cocoa knitting ponchos, my mind immediately went to Coco from Forster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
OMG you know we exsist!!! GOD DEFFEND NEW ZEALAND
Wait a second... He didn't put a quarter in the Staff Porckchop Party Fund!
This guy reminds me of Captain Kirk when he talks.
2:00 "A pet bat would be so cool!" :D
2:04 "Why you do this, John?" D:
Oh my god he knows we exhist
They sell chinchillas at the pet store in my town. They even have oversized hamster balls they can use. And cute little plastic igloos they can use too
Oh man I would LOVE to have a Wolf Dog hybrid, actually I would love to own a Wolf as a pet.
Pro tip: settle for a Czech Vlac or a Saarloos or something, and only after talking to owners of those breeds.
Thanks for the tip, Those are both beautiful dogs WOW.I do have a Siberian Husky and a German Sheppard cross at the moment and I think that's enough for now but maybe one day :)
My grandpa actually had one that was about 3/4 wolf and she was named Queen.
That's so awesome, I have a Syberian Husky and that's as close as Ill get I thimk
Don't be jealous, that dog's been dead for about 30+ years
Firstly as a New Zealander, thanks for recognising that we exist. Secondly, just found out that Karen/Carol's pet ocelot, Babou in Archer is totally based on Salvador Dail's
OMG YOU KNOW WE EXIST!
yes. some of us Americans also know you are affectionately known as ''kiwis''. Cheers. ps i personally love your country for providing the beautiful landscapes seen in the lord of the rings movies.
Leathery Skin?!! What does that mean?..., that is like saying Oily Oil.
You can get oily skin and leathery skin and in rare occasion neither like myself
Leathery is a weird word to refer to skin sense it's just a chemical treated epidermis.
"leathery" usually refers to something has the same characteristics as object made with leather. So even though leather were made from skin and we also have skin, it's not the same.
Leathery, referring to the texture of chemically treated epidermis.
Alec Risser do you even understand colloquial usage of words?
Every time I see this channels name I think of dental floss running through my brain.
I had a pet jumping spider for about a year who I found in my room. RIP Cas, you creepy big-eyed ball of cuteness.
Thanks for taking the time to look that up! I didn't realize that there was another type. I thought the other one may have been its cousin, a degu. I suppose only the lanigera are more commonly kept as household pets.

llamas have toe nails? i always assumed they had hooves...MIND BLOWN
THANK YOU for giving love to Ellis Coleman!!!
Lots of these animals are at the camp I go to in Missouri, Cub Creek. They have lots of different animals, like cats and snakes, but they specialize in the exotic.
skunks are actually pretty decent pets, same for foxes (fennec fox especially), savannah cats are an amazing domestic cat.
John Green just loves venn diagram jokes (all with the same punch-line, but still funny)
Bearded Dragona are actual awesome pets..I've got one that I've had for a year now(since the beardie was born) and their extremely calm and nice if you hold them enough. They have great personalities as well.
Surprised a Beardie was mentioned as lots of people in England own them, me included. They make wonderful companions and have amazing personalities :)
lol almost every time he says "mental floss" i hear "menopause"
Fun fact: A family from South Africa moved into my Texan, suburban neighborhood about a decade ago. They brought with them from Africa 3 or so peacocks that they kept as pets in their backyards. 5:54 and ya know that bite will cause you to bleed from the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and pretty much any other oraface
8:14 I actually heard "Thank you for watching menopause". I almost choked eating my brownies.
Don't forget that Tyco Brahe also liked to get his pet moose drunk and thought it was the world's fastest land mammal.
Everyone always thought i was weird for being afraid of hippos
Chickens, pigs and llamas are all domesticated
And squirrels are not. He did a pretty good job for organismal biology. So few get it right these days.
Llamas are definitely not
got every time i click on these im like plz be hank or john plz be hank or john they make it so much more interestin than it already is
FINALLY
5 MONTHS OF SEARCHING RUclips TO FIND THIS ONE CHANNEL!!!!
I DID IT
I feel I need to post here, that I had a pet Scorpion once. His name was Wesley, and he was great! It was so much fun watching him eat live crickets (especially when they came to half way through), and I patted him with a pencil. :)
Very interesting, I wouldn't be interesting in any of those.

The mention of chinchillas and sugar gliders was kinda funny, since my ex-wife owns several chinchillas, and my daughter has a pet sugar glider.
i swear i read raccon right before the four minute mark but these vids are snappy-quick
The amount of stuff you guys have time to do. :)
My biology teacher has a pet Sugar Glider. He's also the teacher who (prettymuch) showed me the wonders of Hank and John Green.
I know this is splitting hairs but technically pigs, chickens and lamas are domesticated animals much like horses, sheep, cows. Lol I of course mean when the antelope is mid-air from jump-running (idk the exact word to describe it... it's too early xP )
That was definitely not a chinchilla. It's actually a cousin of chinchillas known as a Viscacha(not sure if I spelled that right). They're bigger and more bunny looking. :)

I visited the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi a few weeks ago, that is where the Giraffe Manor is located. We got to feed the same giraffes.
How did you type... w-with your claws? DYING LAUGHING.
That cat hybrid angel face was gorgeous. I want one.
Grandpa had a white wolf-dog, 7/8ths wolf. He was just Buddy to us. When he was 7, he ran off to live with the local coyote pack:(
Aww, he didn't mention Winnie, the black bear that became the real-life inspiration for Winnie the Pooh. She was apparently really friendly.
Also, I've been wondering about red pandas - has anyone ever domesticated (or "domesticated") any?
They seem like really chill animals in zoos and stuff, but so do regular pandas. And I wouldn't trust a regular panda in the wild, just off instinct.
I because very happy when you mentioned Tom Felton
hey, im here from 2022--you made it my guy
"If you want to be beautiful, have a pig." I can't even...
I've had two pet chinchillas now, my first one was named Ruby and my current one is named Hammer. They were both sweet and love to cuddle.
You know us New Zealanders so well! Come visit.
My friend just bought a sugar glider and it's adorable.
You spelled raccoon wrong... oh no! Now, I'm "that" guy. Thanks for the great videos.
lol when he said Madagascar promotes inadequate fear of hippos in most children
I have a Bearded Dragon; had him since he was a baby! Best pet I ever had!

OMG you know we exist!!! :D gotta love a good mention
A squirrel is the one undomestic pet that I badly want!
My friend went on vacation to South Africa and saw that very hippo. He fed it tea from a sippy cup.
venn diagram jokes are the best. ive never heard a bad one
That's right Sacramento is so awesome we have zebras running around :)
THAT VENN DIAGRAM KILLED ME!!!
"Aerosmith's Steven Tyler has a raccoon that he likes to bring fishing with him" Honesty, I was more surprised to learn that he likes to fish.
Same
@@happyfacefries weird ,right? The mental picture gives me the giggles lol

Oh yay!!!! New Zealand was mentioned. We prefer the term Kiwis though but thank you John for acknowledging our existence (:
My 6th grade teacher had an albino hedgehog! She brought him to class a couple times, he was so cute.
Bit sad to not see leopard geckos on the list. They're about as unusual as bearded dragons and they're pretty much exactly the same as wild geckos. Adorable tiny dinosaurs.
