I painted a guitar and then used polishing compound applied with a buffer. My laundry room has a nice line of white spatter all around it now lol.
Fantastic video! Going to have to give this a try. This is how they do it on the 1:1 cars, so why not on models too.

Just wanted to give you a tip for polishing. I just got a Sonax Profiline EX04-06 polishing compound, it's specifically designed to get from 2000 grit sanded clear to mirror finish in one step. It's fucking spectacular. Hand polishing with microfiber cloth you get it from totally dull 2000 grit to the most shiny and wet looking clear you've ever seen in like 20 seconds of rubbing. It's like magic. It's expensive, but worth every coin. Best polishing compound I've ever tried, makes everything else useless to me now. It was recommended to me by a guy who polishes cars for a living.

You do beautiful work and your production skills are top notch. What other sanding and polishing products have you used, the ones you use in this video would not have been my first choice . I've been painting models and real cars for over 30 years and one of my golden rules for getting the deepest shine is to use the finest Grit sandpaper you can find, you may think it doesn't make a difference but it does. And your polishing won't take nearly as long with less chance of burn through. Just my opinion love your videos have a great day.

Nice! Funny to see you use the same stuff I do. Meguiars Scratch X works wonders after wetsanding w. 2000 grit. I polish with foam pads attached to a cordless drill. Less RPM's and less heat. But ultimately the best results I get is with hand rubbing with a microfiber cloth....More labor and time intensive, but less chance of gouging or burn-in.
One step you might also want to include after is then use Mequiars Polishing Glaze!!! It looks like you waxed it, but won't prevent you from being able to apply Bare Metal Foil or detail painting. Just hand rub with a micro fiber and the shine is amazing!
I rarely wax, as it sometimes makes the enamel clear take on a milky appearance...and this is on models that have cured for a year! Yes, I said a year...I mass paint like 10 car bodies at a time on those rare nice days, and store them for the build.
Did you say some models (Paint) you have cured for a year? Did I read that correctly? A year?!!! Is that a typo?
@@catlady8324 The paint didn’t need to cure for a year…It’s just I will gang paint maybe 5 cars at one time, and it might be a year until I get to actually building it. A typical Testors enamel will fully cure for sanding and polishing in about a week or 2.

I noticed you did not polish the three part Gravity clear coat - is it so good that you don't need to polish it or would you still recommend polishing it for best results?

If the clear does not need polishing, or ver very little, just don't polish it. Polishing is a lot of hard long work and does not always make it better with 2k clears.

Great tutorial! I'm getting back into the model car building and the body paint has ALWAYS been a sore spot for me, often having to strip the paint like 3 times and start over. I tried this method on a scrap model and while I'm still working on the painting part of the technique, I'm loving the shine!
Question though: which step would you apply the decals? Would it go between the two clear coats?
Either underneath the clear or in between. But when doing it in between coats it will take a lot longer to do, as the first coat of clear needs a couple days to dry before you can apply the decal. And apply the finish coats of clear.
I lay them on the first coat of clear, dust over them to make sure the paint does not destroy the decal after that the coates can get heavier to level everything out. you don't want bumps where decals are
Do you use a new/clean wheel for each compound? Provided you note which compound used on the polishing wheel, can you reuse the wheel? Can the wheels be cleaned? Just trying to reduce, reuse, or recycle.

hi, ive painted a knight rider in black. There was a dust particel on the hood. Ive sended it with 1000grid on that tiny spot. Not its totaly dull like you hood. Ive tried it to polish it with my dremel with the same polishing had u use in the video. The spot stays dull no mather how long i hold the polishing head on it. Is it because i have to send it with 1500 and 3000 and so on? OR what is wrong. Im thinking on selling this kit.
Yes you need to sand it with 1500 2000 2500 3000 and so on
and then it will shine again? Because i dont want to spend more money on this kit if it gets worst and worst even more. Bought this polishing heads and now i need to buy this sanding paper......should i make a picture for you so you can estimate it better?

You may have burn through the clear coat on that spot it don't take much maybe even when you wet sand it you could have damage clear coat you may have to reclear coat paint
when you look closely into the paint with a flash pointing at it can you notice any noticeable scratches left behind by the tool?

Do you have to polish the car when the clear coat is fresh? I have some older models that lost their shine and am wondering if i can polish them again or if i have to aply a new layer of clear coat to polish it safely.
The older the clear the better it is to polish them. the fresher the clear the worst it is to polish it as the clear is not cured fully

Hi may I ask have you experienced machine polishing the Zero paints Diamond lacquer that you started to use recently.
It works the same way as the normal 2k
If talking grits the ones your using equate to which in say Tamiya sand papers ? As these seem most commonly around.
Use a micro fibre cloth will give you a better finish
What's the longest you have waited between 2k clear coats? I've sprayed a few coats last weekend but later noticed some spots with orange peel. It looks like clear coat might not be thick enough to sand it out so I was going to put another layer on, but I will only be able to do that this weekend which would make it a week after last coat...
+Andrius Gonestas just sand it lightly, youll be fine, after a week you should be able to add another couple of couts

Grit per CM versus Grit per square inch? Never thought of that. Funny, isn't it? This is why I (here in the United States) will take it down to 6,000 (or finer) just to be sure. BUT? I don't build many model cars...I have one in my stash that I'm particularly interested in getting right; it's a 1957 Corvette. I have other models to practice on first, of course...but? Your videos are a wealth of information. (You're in Canada? I am guessing from the accent..)...
Another thing: Your techniques of polishing could also be used for airliner builds. I have two Concordes in 1:72 scale, I plan one in "flight", the other in Ground Mode. Thanks for great video content. Helps this old fool learn some new tricks....

i always seem to burn through the paint on the sharper edges. one thing i want to know how long after you paint to you apply the clear coat. and do you not sand the bare paint??? i am sure i cam get a better finish in my kits as what i am getting now. any help would be greatly appreciated. thx

What is the RPM when power polishing, was it the lighting the finish still looked weird, was it a sparkle paint???

also if you have orange peel on the paint and then add clear its going to be difficult to get the peel out or am i missing the point

Ginganinja 900 works with spray paint aswell. But you need to be very very carefull as spray paint clear is a lot softer than 2k ckear. It can melt a lot faster when using this method. So be very carefull and don't stay in 1 place for to long with the polisher
Lucky for you, you can buy 2K clear coats in spray paint form today too. They have a little pull tab on the bottom of the can that you pull and it breaks the seal inside the can enabling two containers to basically mix, and you get the exact same clear coat that you would if you bought two separate components, mixed them and used a professional gun to spray. The only downside is that those 2K clear cans are about 3x as expensive as 1K clear coats, and they have to be used within a couple of hours after mixing them for the first time , because the lacquer will basically harden inside the can in a while and you can't spray it anymore. Basically, you'll waste a lot of it unless you're spraying a pretty big area. Still worth it though, because 1K clear coats, never and I repeat, NEVER harden properly. I've had parts painted in many different ways, different thicknesses, different amounts of coats, different sanding and polishing procedures, etc. and none that I managed to spray thick enough to give a deep gloss finish ever dried completely. I'm talking years, after a couple of years of components sitting in the storage I can still feel with my fingernail that the surface is soft. With 2K you'll get rock hard surface after a week of drying.

Question for anyone who can answer?? What is the best way to minimize orange peel and imperfections in the first place, during the painting process?? I get good, color, good clear & shine but just a ton of peel. I am cleaning models, sanding with 600, priming with Zero Grey Filler, dust/light coat on 1st coat and the progressing wetter coats approximately 15 minutes apart, longer before the Zero 2K Clear. Is there something in the painting technique itself I can do to improve results??
With orange peel there are so many possible reasons.
First thing is your setup. Is your pressure too high or low? Find the sweet spot.
Is the paint thinned down enough, or too much?
What are the weather conditions? Painting in cold weather is not ideal.
Is your airbrush good? Needle size too small or large?
Then there is technique. Distance from panel, speed of your strokes, how much overlap between strokes, how heavy you are applying the product.
Painting is not something that you will master overnight
Possibly a dumb question. If you don’t have orange peel do you need to wet sand before you polish?

Its not the color you polish. it is the clear coat. Lighter colors will hide the scrathes better then the darker ones.
Is this only for 2k clear? Could the same be done for Tamiya or Mr.Hobby clears?
+David Anderson It would work with 1k(tamiya mr.hobby etc) aswell. though you should be more carefull as that paint is a lot softer

It is, but it does not make sense. The paint won't shine. The clearcoat will. You can clear over bmf
Had already polished out body when I decided to do the bmf. And I just want to seal the bmf so that it doesn't peel up when cleaning the model for a show.
Don't worry about the bmf peeling up. that will stay down without clear on it;)

p2000 abrasive is the equivalent of 1000. The former being the european standard and latter being the american standard. So numbers being equal, european is coarser. Are your sand papers designated with letter p followed by grit number such as in Tamiya sand papers. Thanks in advance.

does these cars come with removable hood or is that a mod?
The Tamiya versions come with a removable hood and engine.
What are the chances of me getting a finish like this, priming with Vallejo acrylic and then painting with Vallejo metallic paint. Followed by a polish or something? I don't make scale cars, this polishing method has be intrigued though.
Big Gee the vallejo paints will not be able to get a shine like this. They are not as hard of of this quality
Understood, thanks for the reply. I'm trying to avoid buying new materials, I normally build AFV. Going to prime with Vallejo, Paint with Vallejo, and then Gloss Varnish after decals etc. I'm not sure I'll be able to wet sand or wax. Like you said, being it's a water based product it's not as durable. I'm tempted to go full bore but spraying enamel paint makes me really sick, even with a mask :(

Either look for a small polishing machine. Or get a power reducer. This will slow it down
