    Great video Jakob - really enjoyed it! I can relate so much to your motivations and your journey. I DIY'd my first modular synth back in the 70's based on magazine and newsletter articles. I still have some original CEM chips, OTA's in metal cans, MC1495 multipliers etc. Some of those old modules still work.
    I got hooked on modular again after trying VCVRack. Now have over 70 modules and 21U of rack, 100% DIY, ~20% designed by me. I don't have an accurate cost but its north of $7000 Cdn. DIY is not necessarily cheap but its so rewarding to make your own stuff. I don't end up making much music but I love building things and playing with sound. Rock on brother!

    You know, I never thought that making sounds would be its own thing. But you’re right…music is about self expression. Not everything needs to be designed for mainstream. Sound making is your creative outlet. I use a ton of your presets, which wouldn’t have been possible if you didn’t experiment with it.

    When you're ready for it: iPad (which you are already well equipped with)+ Aum + Expert Sleepers ES9 + Covariant plugin.. This is basically complete integration of iPad and Modular. Covariant converts any midi through Aum into CV and triggers and gates etc. and the ES9 handles multiple channels of audio in and out for processing, recording etc...

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  3 месяца назад

      I was looking into this and so I checked out both ES8 and ES8 first. But then I found Befaco AC/DC and saw it was available as a DIY kit so I was gonna get one. Problem was that they sold out and then I kinda forgot about it. But yeah, I’m still looking into various ways of integrating both platforms. The Expert sleeper stuff does look great.

    • @erikflom1566
      @erikflom1566 3 месяца назад

      @@JakobHaq Yes, ES8 if you need ADAT, ES9 if you need more analog IO, Befaco if fewer IO is all you need. My main purpose was to use iOS audio effects (plentiful and cheap) since I didn't want to go too far down that rabbit hole in eurorack - no more space and too much $. I also realized that I wasn't really enjoying the sequencer options I had in hardware and the interesting ones are expensive and wide and iOS sequencers are pretty interesting. So I actually got an ES5 (8 more gate trigger outputs) and a ESX-8CV (8 more CV outputs). I can trigger all 8 channels on my Salmple and still have clock, start/run and 3 voices of CV/gate without cutting into the audio outs on the ES9. It's way more than I need as just a hobbyist but it's there for me to grow into.. I do really like Befaco and I've built about 5-6 of their modules. I like to fool myself that I am making Eurorack affordable by doing as much soldering as possible!

    Inspiring video! I am nearing completion of my first eurorack case, and there's a lot of things you mentioned about your planning and process I really resonated with. The goal for my case is that when all is said and done, I will have paid less than the ModularGrid estimated price, including the case I made for it and the cables! While DIY is not an option for my particular rack plan (well, besides the case as already mentioned), I have been searching the web for great used deals (the entire genesis of this plan came from scoring a great Facebook Marketplace find). I have two more modules left to acquire, and as I have been keeping track of how much I've paid for it thus far, I am well on track to succeed on my price goal! Once I'm done I should make a video about my plan and process, some points will be similar to yours though I have a few other thoughts I think don't get mentioned enough. Excited to see where the MOOdular goes!

      There are many ways of cutting down on cost btw. One way is to diy as much as you can and to use less expensive ways of doing stuff (as long as your going about stuff in a safe way). Some of my modules didn’t cost me more than 10-20 bucks. And there’s lots of basic stuff that me can build like that. Howevr, Don’t mess around with power supplies and > wall power < unless you know what you’re doing. Finally I recommend @MoritzKlein0 for learning about electronics and synth circuits. He makes some of the absolute best content about this.

    I have that same illness. I mean the thing about needing to build nhooh sounds for a new hunk of moohsick despite having made in advance thousands of sounds, some of which I made for exactly the sort of moohsick I am making at that moment. It still feels insufficiently customized to the song. So I edit the closest-sounding preset to what I had in mind, right? Ooooh no - I edit several presets, then make a new one anyway. Because I have it bad, this malady. Sorry you have your own case, but we make the best of the hand we are dealt. In my case, I see I am a sick goat in more ways than one.
    On your blooming design/electronics/modular/sound/music journey, you may want to bump into another Swedish modular people now doing business full time under the name DPW. I think his name is Dan? He has an extensive design and electronics background in other areas, and has done music gear part-time for a long while. Now he is doing it full time, and he has a very particular and intense thoughts on what he wants to do in modular. He seems like a personable modular people who has interesting gear and ideas. DPW is on YT also. He might be a good possibly-local modular person to talk with, along with the various other local people doing this kind of thing. Why him? He popped into my head.
    Good luck with all this. I wish I had the time to go back to DIY. Being a sick fuck - I mean goat - I rarely get more than an hour a day to do anything anymore because of more visceral illnesses. Being a crazy perfectionist is poorly suited to serious illness. I have bottomless patience and plenty of skill, but no time. Still, I can dream, however, and I can poke a pad, often enough.
    Cheers on the lovely synth lab. Keep going, Jakob.

    Great video.
    btw. I find very strange to hear about OCD in the context of modular where each module looks different, and usually a module hosts a few completely different styles of knobs. Although I do like the funky aesthetics of the modulars, I still very much bothered with it's Frankenstein knob theme.

    Respect for work you did on this. I will be ready to buy the "Horror Show" app that you will create in 2025 😂

    20:09 - I’ve only been into making music since 2022, but this mindset of saving projects or the like has never clicked with me.
    Seeing this video helps me feel better about that.
    I had a feeling you’d go modular, after watching your videos for Hilda and ButterSynth. Congrats on the rack!

      Yeah I had different priorities for decades regarding my workflow. I needed stuff to be fast in all aspects of music making. Saving and reloading has been a huge part. This is why I abandoned modular workflow in the past. Back then that workflow was too slow and somewhat unpredictable, especially since I didn’t own the systems I used.
      .
      So I started using digital versions of modular early on to be able to get more personal with it. VAZ modular was one of them. I later added CreamWare sound cards to my system and used the modular in that one. But I still felt like it was too slow. Well many years has gone by and my ADHD has done a number on me. This new tool I’ve built is exactly what I need.
      .
      However … I do keep a recorder on hand whenever I fire it up. I still want to capture(save) some of the stuff that happens when I jibe with the moo.

      @@JakobHaq _ I also have ADHD and I wonder if that’s part of my process with music. Totally understand your points though and no knocking it! I just jam yanno?
      I like watching those 2-4 hour streams of generative ambient sessions showcasing their euroracks. It’s almost meditative! If my adhd is full bore having something like that on is super helpful to just chill.
      Hope to hear some more of your recordings with your Moo!

      and have more fun ;) let people do what they want to do! we already have SO much music out there and not everyone wants to be a full-time musician / producer / dj / whatever. some people are just a lot into cables and led-lights and.. well modular is perfect for those candidates!

      Honestly, it’s not that much money. I can count the number of bedroom producers who have spent so much on desktop software and don’t even do anything with them.
      At least the hardware from Eurorack can be legit used for signal analysis. The equipment is very similar to what I used in my Engineering degree.And it’s ultimately up to the person to control their spending addiction. Buy parts in bulk. It will save you a LOT of money.
      And also…let people have fun. That’s how you create the most expressive music. When you’re not bound by societal norms.
