I think the key main difference is the knobs vs menus for controlling these. With the lx100 you can control aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation (using auto iso I'm presuming) all without entering a menu. Completely different experience for those who actually understand how to shoot manual. I'll be getting it over the rx100 for exactly that reason.
Keep it simple: LX-100 Pros: Bigger sensor, fewer but larger pixels (greater color depth), best in class manual controls, 4K video, time lapses, much better battery life. RX100iii Pros: Smaller, more but much smaller pixels, tilt screen. Conclusion: LX-100 is for more experienced photographers. RX100 more suited for point and shoot folks.
Some good points, some clever arguments... But 24+ minutes review without a single image comparison... I think you missed the key point of a video over a radio !
Images contained in video are subjected to all kinds of artifacts and dont really tell us anything. It's like trying to show someone how loud something is in a video
Thanks for the review, very informative! More advanced compact cameras are here to stay. As a photojournalist it's easier to capture people in the moment with a smaller camera. You can walk a round like spectator, more unnoticed, unlike with a DSLR.
Igor Saringer im not thinking about blogging but i want to do good quality challenge videos and i found this maybe it will help u it looks pretty good im still thinking about it www.cnet.com/products/sony-hdr-mv1/
Pixels are the same size on the 16mp m4/3 sensor as they are on the 12.8mp useable part of the sensor here on the lx100. It's a micro 4/3rd 16 mp sensor, but it's only using approx 80% of the sensor, so pixel size is the same as a 16mp m4/3 sensor. F stop equivalent probably same as an f1.8 on a M/43 using the whole sensor. They've done this to keep the size down, getting this zoom on a 4/3 would need a bigger lens and body
Fairly good comparison, but I am not sure where you are getting some of your facts on the LX100. You mentioned that the LX100 can only zoom uding the zoom lever that surrounds the shutter button. That is simply not true. I zoom all the time with the lens control ring on my LX100. You can program either device for stepped or non-stepped zoom. The lens control ring can also provide manual focus, shutter control and other functions depending on how you have it programmed. You also mentioned that the Lumix LX100 uses 25mm as its widest focal length. From all that I have ever seen written, including Panasonic's site, this lens operates from 24mm-75mm.
I just got the M3 and had to send it back due to an overexposure problem. I think there is something wrong with the lens or the software in the camera ugh. Looking at the LX-100 now. But I really liked the compact size of the M3.
Nice video! :) I'm still thinking what to get for travel. I really love the LX100's look but the form factor of the RX100 makes me have second thoughts.
I have the RX100M3 and its about the largest camera you want to stick in your pocket or hang off your belt in a softcase. If I wanted something bigger I may as well go with a DSLR.
i'd really like to see a new rx100 mkIV with 4k video, 16mpx and a larger sensor with a slightly larger body if it requires it or maybe a rx200 or something
nice review but don't you agree with me that rx100m3 should be compared to something with the same pocket size like canon g7x.It's even more affordable and comes with better zoom capabilities,at least on paper.
What about the Samsung Mini (1" bsi interchangeable lens, ) or the Canon GX 7. The Mini shoots in raw Jpg. Has a touch screen and wifi directly to the internet. As well as wifi and NFC to a smart device. The images are magnificent and its under 500, with a built in flash as well as an external in the box.
Hi! Looking for advice on what compact camera I should get! Right now I have been using a Canon T4i for a while now(planning to upgrade to a full frame in a year or two)but am looking for a compact camera to add on, especially for travels. My travels are going to be volunteer heavy. I would like to get great, professional photos and videos, but I can't take my dslr as it would be too much of a hassle because the main part of my trip would be the volunteer work. Which compact camera would be best for me? Thank You!:)
I do medical missions in the mountains in Myanmar. I have reserve weight for equipment etc. The RX100 mk 3 has served me well for 7 years, 8 trips. No dust issues although the mountains are dusty. Carried 2 extra batteries and had no issues. It’s the idea camera for those on volunteer trips to remote areas.
Hi. I am in the market for a true pocket camera. I am leaning towards the Sony RXIII for its size and price. I find the Panasonic LUMIX LX100 a little big. Is there any camera better than the Sony RXIII with regard to price and size?
Sharin Chatani Canon G7X Mark II, Panasonic LUMIX TZ100, Fujifilm X70 (warning, no zoom lens, still great though, same with Ricoh GR II), maybe Leica C/D-Lux 6 (or theirs Panasonic versions) if you want sth really tiny.
I recently noticed that at 24mm my RX100 IV has barrel distortion in the Jpegs after the in camera correction. I'm considering selling it due to it. Does the LX100 have any barrel distortion or the ZS100?
Great video... I've been looking for a Premium compact camera. The last one I owned was a Sony 270 many years ago then that was taken over by many variations of mobile phone cameras. I've been looking at the RX100iii and the LX100 and I love the compact design of the Sony.. With the LX having the bigger sensor of the two and Sony having the greater number of pixels, would that make these two equal when taking pictures?
Bill Paxton No it wouldn't. The number of pixels has a completely different impact on your pictures than sensor size. It's as thogh you were asking "car A has 6 cylinders and car B is rear wheel drive, would that make them equal?" Due to these differences it's actually physically impossible to take exactly the same picture with both cameras. However, in terms of mere image quality there is no difference to talk about. If you want to take pictures as you do with your mobile but with much higher quality results, the Sony is the better choice. If you plan to visit photography workshops, you should pick the Panasonic.
I do not know which camera to choose, that the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX100 or Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III Primarily we are so small and compact camera needs for video recording and shooting in low light. What do you recommend ..? thank you.
Hope you can do a Sony RX100m3 vs Canon G7X review - the lens size would be way to big to fit with APS-C Panasonic has a lens cap for the LX100 that auto opens and closes - just have to order - being shipped for Europe customers for free -
Some people (like me) 95% of purchase decision is aesthetics. When it comes to spend hard earned cash or something, I won't spend a $1 unless I absolutely love it. I don't absolutely love the LX100 because the extended lens looks ugly, but other than that, I like all the features, and I like as much what the LX100 as what it does not have. I am happy that it does not have cheesy plastic articulated LCD, which frankly ruins the aesthetics of the camera. I far prefer the articulated LCD that fully closes so I don't have to look at it at all. My old DMC-FZ30 has that, and it's pleasure to use with closed LCD. Anyway, am I overreacting, or aesthetics are very important in high-end point and shoot camera?
Taft Films I still have the DMC-FZ30. It has an articulated LCD that I can keep closed, which I do most of the time. I like that type of the LCD. What I don't like are the ones that articulate, but don't close, like on the new Olympus cameras. It simply ruins the camera aesthetics that cheesy plastic articulated screen.
well in that case your gonna have to hold out on purchases forever.. if you compare these two for example they are both made in china, similar specs and the only aesthetic difference really is size. The panasonics bigger size prob has its advantages, as someone else here mentioned the sony heats up shooting 4k - the panasonic probably has better heat dissipation due to its larger size.
I am debating between RX 100 mark2 or fuji x30,What better? They are about the same price..Where is better image quality? I like the fuji x30 because of manual operation with manual zoom, but is too big .. I do not know what to choose
sorry sir, shall you not put the lens cover on the lumix LX100 to see the actual size when you have it in the jacket ? because the Sony RX100 doesn't need a lens cover to fit in a pocket. Sony RX100 III is definitively the best smallest premium expert camera. Let other companies come with the same form factor (like Canon G7X) then we 'll compare what is comparable.
Isn't it actually a four thirds sensor (not a micro four thirds) with cropped ratios (1:1, 3:2, etc)? Also, you did not mention Olympus being an innovative player in the DI market (7-axis stabilization, etc). Great video overall.
Shaka The four thirds sensor is used on nearly all MFT cameras, the only exception I know about is the BMPCC. MFT only refers to the lens mount. The Panny does indeed though, not use the whole sensor, letting them create a smaller, more bright, and cheaper for them to make, lens.
I feel like the LX100 competes more directly with the a6000. In size, price and capability. in fact, if anything, it feels like it'll cannibalize sales from the smaller m4/3 ILCs.
Shanmuga Sundaram The A6000 is my primary camera and I can honestly say that in my every day use the 23 MP don't make any difference to me. I don't make huge prints and I was able to print 13 x20 inches (I believe) with acceptable results with my 8MP Canon 40D. I think for most users who will be doing showing their work on the web or printing that size or lower (above that printer costs become prohibitive for most hobbyist and even a lot of pros) the "it has twice the megapixels" argument isn't a good one. But in all other ways the LX100 stacks up very, very closely to the A6000 with the kit lens and given the choice today I'm not sure if I'd have picked the Sony given the LX's better lens.
I view photos on my large size tv, so i will need those MP. I also love good depth of field which larger sensor size helps. I own rx100 now, but I will very well buy lx100 on my next purchase just for the additional controls.
I was ready to purchase the Sony a6000, mainly because I own 3 vintage Canon lenses that will work with an adapter on that camera. Then I noticed this camera. I'm drawn to the manual controls which I prefer over digital. Now I'm leaning towards the Lumix with every review I see. Think I'll give my daughter the old school Canon lenses to use on her full frame EOS.
I've been trying to research a good travel camera to replace my phone and I don't lug around my dslr. I'm starting to get confused as to why these are fair comparisons. If I can't fit the LX100 in my pocket, I think it's going to fall into the same category as my dslr: left at home for my phone that fits in my pocket. Pointless, may as well go Fuji.
The LX100 can fit in a far smaller messenger bag than a DSLR. I'm struggling to do that even with my small Canon EOS 100D / SL1 with a 24mm pancake lens.
Hi, has anyone had experience with overheating while filming? Which one performs better? There is a walkaround to sony's clip duration limit, but I want to be sure that the camera will not switch off, any experience with that?
A few questions, for anyone who might know the answer: Do either of the cameras have a manual focus ring? Does the LX100 aspect ratio switching also work for video?
I doubt the LX100 would compete much against the RX100M3 in terms of sales. The M3 (together with the M1 and M2) sold like cakes because people were getting great images from such a small package. I can imagine the 'enthusiast' trying out the LX100 but even then I doubt the images would be that much more better with the sensor crop factor. Plus, it's too early for 4K at this point in time. I'm waiting for some real image comparisons...
That is a nice camera. I recently bought the M3 and i love it. The LX seems too big for me and i cant give up the screen articulation on the M3. I dont think im ready to move on up to 4k video but i wish the m3 had that option.
LOL you hoped Sony to lower prices ;) Look what Sony does with the a6300 RX10 3 and the RX100 4! My RX100 1 in 2013 was really cheap LOL The well priced Nikon DL line will kill this overpriced RX stuff altogether ... Still love my RX100 and can't find anything to replace it at a reasonable price...
Here we are in January of 2020 and both the LX100 and the RX100 mk iii are still very much in demand.
The RX100 Mark 4 has some real heat issues. After 5 minutes of 4K video, it shuts down as it starts to overheat. The LX100 has no heat issues.
That's the main reason I'm considering the Linux too. I feel that is it's main selling feature.
travellife08 Linux? 😂

RX100iii Pros: Smaller, more but much smaller pixels, tilt screen.
Conclusion:

RX100 more suited for point and shoot folks.

+Giutubo Spatubo That's what I was just going to say.
Some good points, some clever arguments... But 24+ minutes review without a single image comparison...
I think you missed the key point of a video over a radio !
I guess you must use your imagination and see "imagine images" :D
Images contained in video are subjected to all kinds of artifacts and dont really tell us anything.
It's like trying to show someone how loud something is in a video
Your forgot to mention the 3 custom buttons in the LX-100, which are incredibly useful. All in all, RX is more handy, LX is a better camera.
LX100 larger sensor less pixels. Sony more pixels smaller sensor... Both cameras are solid performers! This is a very hard one!
Thanks for the review, very informative! More advanced compact cameras are here to stay. As a photojournalist it's easier to capture people in the moment with a smaller camera. You can walk a round like spectator, more unnoticed, unlike with a DSLR.
Which camera do you recommend to vlog?
Igor Saringer The articulation screen where you can see yourself would be a huge plus factor as far as vlogging is concerned.
Igor Saringer im not thinking about blogging but i want to do good quality challenge videos and i found this maybe it will help u it looks pretty good im still thinking about it www.cnet.com/products/sony-hdr-mv1/
i would say none of these, but lumix gf7. or almost any other "g" lumix. hard to beat for a video quality.

There are already APS-C compact cameras namely Nikon A, Fuji X100/s/t, Ricoh GR.
I'm very impress, you made an outstanding comparison and review. great video, very useful.
Fantastic review thank you very much very tough choice between the two but for the handling I have to go with Panasonic amongst other things
Easy decision for me, LX100 all the way!
I just got the M3 and had to send it back due to an overexposure problem. I think there is something wrong with the lens or the software in the camera ugh. Looking at the LX-100 now. But I really liked the compact size of the M3.
Nice video! :)
I'm still thinking what to get for travel. I really love the LX100's look but the form factor of the RX100 makes me have second thoughts.
You have such an easy to listen voice. Great review! I wish the Rx-1 had an EVF ;(
He sounds like a second rate disc jockey
I would go for LX100 Anytime....
Very good review one of the best I have watched. Thanks. I have made up my mind. Sony MKIII
Even without the video - LX100 Please!
I have the RX100M3 and its about the largest camera you want to stick in your pocket or hang off your belt in a softcase. If I wanted something bigger I may as well go with a DSLR.
i'd really like to see a new rx100 mkIV with 4k video, 16mpx and a larger sensor with a slightly larger body if it requires it or maybe a rx200 or something
larger body = fail
Two years down the line, what do you recommend now?
I think the comparison should be between Lx ! 00 vs 6000
i have never saw a 4k video so its my first time
Very good review, thanks!
I'm not seeing these cameras being similar enough to "compare". Apples and oranges. They're both nice, but not really close enough in features.
Stephen Drake No its relevant, because this help me to undrstand both in 25mins. I was in a dilemma on choosing one. Decide to pickup Sony RX100M3,
It is all about the size ! Of course the LX 100 is better but I can't put it in my backpocket of my trousers.
+pol1250 Your trousers re too small then.
Wild to see the sony RX1 selling for over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARD , USED(!!!!!) in 2024. Smh. Sellers are truly wildn
nice review but don't you agree with me that rx100m3 should be compared to something with the same pocket size like canon g7x.It's even more affordable and comes with better zoom capabilities,at least on paper.

No contest LX100 all the way for value features and a Leica Glass
I recently noticed that at 24mm my RX100 IV has barrel distortion in the Jpegs after the in camera correction. I'm considering selling it due to it. Does the LX100 have any barrel distortion or the ZS100?

Very long video, but not even one photo sample? Your RX1 compared to the two others would be really interesting :)

Thanks for the video. The Panasonic lx100 is the perfect camera.
Great review, thank you.
LX100 has "24mm" lens. Page 194 manual says, at 4K, it shoots narrow. What is the focal length when it shoots HD & 4K videos. Thank you,
It would be cool to have this lens 24-75mm 1.7-2.8 on a GM1 body in my opinion. Great review!
form factor and the jacket one, but with zoom...do you have a review on a camera like that?
I do not know which camera to choose, that the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX100 or Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III
Primarily we are so small and compact camera needs for video recording and shooting in low light.
What do you recommend ..?
thank you.
Hope you can do a Sony RX100m3 vs Canon G7X review -
the lens size would be way to big to fit with APS-C
Panasonic has a lens cap for the LX100 that auto opens and closes - just have to order - being shipped for Europe customers for free -

I like the fuji x30 because of manual operation with manual zoom, but is too big ..
I do not know what to choose
***** I'm currently confronted by the same question... would you mind telling me which camera you chose and if you're happy with your choice? :)

Thanks for the reply and explanation! Keep up the good work. :)
I feel like the LX100 competes more directly with the a6000. In size, price and capability. in fact, if anything, it feels like it'll cannibalize sales from the smaller m4/3 ILCs.
like gm1? a6000 is different league with 23" sensor unlike ILC which are 16".

...though I already bought the LX100 a few weeks ago anyway, great camera
Yeah I have a GH4 as my main camera and I'll be using this as a small cam to always have with me. I do miss the touchscreen and its swivel-y abilities

LX100 fits better in habd for men and RX100Ms for women.
Lol, shut up

Leica Dilux 2015 ( better firmware ). Check it out .
i want the rx100 so bad for vlohs and youtube videos

rx100 is still better, lx100 cant fit in the pocket
lx100 has a faster lens (digicamdb.com)
