I once had a really bad mouse infestation in my house. They were in our bedroom at night! I could hear them crunching my old kitty's kibble, and he would just sit and watch them--he was like 20 years old and quite done with hunting. It became a bit horrifying...there were far more than a couple dozen mice, probably hundreds overall. But then, a friend of mine left his mouser with us while he went on a long road trip. She was a beautiful orange and white tabby and the most impressive hunter ever. Within a month or two she had killed or driven out every mouse in the house. When we went to bed, she would stalk the house, talking to the mice. (I suspect she was saying "DO YOU FEEL LUCKY, MOUSIES?! HUH? DO YA?") She died of old age in 2015. Years after her passing I moved a huge, heavy piece of furniture that had sat in the same spot for over a decade. I noticed a small, ancient smear of blood on the wall, and on the floor beneath it, a tiny mouse skeleton. I suddenly remembered a time when she had meowed for a day or two at that corner of the room. Now I know why. I miss her still. She was a wonderful, sweet, smart creature and a true friend.

I experienced that real time. It was like a bad sitcom. Caught a baby rat. Set him all up with bedding and his favorite foods. Then I'm, like, You have got to release this guy, so moved him to my car... for three more weeks. Finally, this is the day. I cruise all around looking for the perfect spot. A small creek in a ravine. New home. He doesn't want to get out. Now he's out but doesn't go down the hill to the creek. Instead runs across the road and up an embankment when, out of nowhere, a red tailed hawk swoops down and gently picks him up, never touching down. And off they go like a passenger plane. Slow motion and I'm left completely traumatized. All I could hope is that the hawk dropped the little rat. I told the story to my son, who said, laughingly hysterically, Well, you fed the hawk. Nature is rough!

Mice are incredibly intelligent animals with complex social hierarchies in their families. They play together, cuddle together, forage together, and almost never travel alone. They care about one another and have personal, unique relationships with one another. With this being said, I highly recommend avoiding kill traps if at all possible, and releasing any wild rodents a few miles from your home and others. I’ll be releasing all of the mice I find in the same area, and with the use of their natural pheromones, it is likely they will reunite in the coming days, safely away from my van or other possible nesting sites in homes!
That being said, always wear a mask and gloves when handling wild rodents and dispose of any nesting material with great care. Always wash your hands to be extra cautious!
I also want to address concerns about Hantavirus: though approximately 14% of deer mice (this species) have strains of Hantavirus, most of these strains are not deadly. Hantavirus infections in humans is extremely rare, and if you are wearing gloves and masks while handling wild rodents and clean up responsibility, your risk is incredibly low. Please be mindful but compassionate when dealing with wild rodents. 🐁🐭

Sadly when you find that you have one mouse it usually means you have at least 4-10. My last house was very old and between the crawl space and partial basement had a half wall with a large window sized hole. It had a large piece of wood wedged in it and a wooden knob that when twisted would keep it closed. Well one day the plywood had somehow fallen out of the hole, after we fixed it we noticed a nibbled on bag of of food upstairs in our kitchen. So we decided to do humane mousetraps. That night we caught 3. The night after it was 1. The third night we caught 3 again. Etc until we caught 12 1/2. Yes, the half I don’t want to talk about but let’s just say his pack mate thought he was tasty and so I guess it was a “waste not, want not” situation? 🤷‍♀️ 😖🤢 Thankfully we saw no further evidence and happily a month or so later we sold that house.

Mice are fast breeders. Give them a food source and they rapidly multiply. So it doesn't surprise me you have more. Usually though, once you eliminate their food source they go elsewhere unless they are trapped. They do smell and leave a mess. But find their food source and close it off unless you really like smelly little rodents.

In your van you will need to get them out they could cause health issues and multiply fast. I would suggest clearing everything out to look for a nest and where they are getting in plug the spot with steel wool. The RUclips channel Shawn woods, shows mouse deterrent’s that work I would suggest the peppermint essential oil one we use it in our camper. In a defuser and just poured into spots. Can make a mouse home for them away from your camper with food in it to draw them to that area.

Wherever it has been will need to be cleaned of mouse urine and oils, or you will have more of them attracted to the same area. Or set my cup of tea in the cup holder near the dash which they utilized. Finally I bought a few traps and set them both underneath, outside of the van, next a.m. traps were full. Peppermint essential oil sprayed all around underneath the van and in engine compartment helped keep them away. After 20 years in the tropics I can’t handle rodents. Best of luck. ❤

I catch mice in my work office that’s on an airport ramp. I think they are cute too. I caught one in the winter with snow on the ground. While I felt bad, I figured he’s a mouse…he gotta live a mouse life. So I released him away from the terminal building in a field near a taxiway. I sometimes wonder what happened to him. 🐭

Eric from Nomadic Fanatic has an effective mouse trap in the form of a pail, with a flap for a lid and a tiny ladder for the mouse to climb up and fall into the trap. It's in one of his recent videos. Do check it out.

There's always more than one. Try Tomcat brand Rodent spray repellent. It's smells like strong mint and they hate it. They will run from your van.

Next time just get sticky mouse traps, when you catch the mouse you can take it somewhere to release it by putting a little oil on the pad it loosens the glue and off they go... But you will need to relocate them very far away...

My sister and I caught a mouse in my brother's house many many years ago. It was a large field mouse (he lived in the hills surrounded by a heavily wooded area). After a long battle one night of cornering him upstairs we trapped him and set him free in the woods, but he was umm...stuck to the trap tape soooo umm....unfortunately he didn't go far. *ahem. Ehh...apparently, we weren't as nice as you 😬lol

the problem is: the trap is TO COMPLEX! take one of these simple with a hook ! and put the stick of the hook very to the edge. And it's good the trap to be big because you dont know hob big the muse can be.. and smal trap help the mause because they are very delicate. AND you ahev to found a CAT, open the dor, when the muse jump out THE CAT WILL CATCH IT!
