Guitar hum can make a great recording sound unprofessional. But handled the right way... your listener may never even notice it's there!

I found putting a light noise gate on the live then turning down the guitar volume and the audio interface volume low so the actual recording is quiet. Then go in and boost the recording with a really nice compressor. Sounds very professional and isn’t complicated

But the hum comes back once you boost the EQ, you’re just raising the frequency the plugin lowered to get rid of the buzz in the first place

Good advice. I fully agree that in some cases one doesn't actually need to do anything about it. Bit of EQ after noise removal is also very helpful. I generally don't record guitars and basses but have moved songs from cassettes to a DAW and sometimes used the background noise remove filter in Audacity to minimize tape hiss with reasonably good results.

I've heard good things about audacities noise filter but I've never tried it! Glad this was helpful, John!

Hi Colin, something I thought of I'd like your opinion on. If you have recording of the hum/buzz with the guitar not playing would it make sense to put it on another track repeated for the length of the guitar part(s), inverting the phase and mixing it in with the guitar track? If it works it should have minimal impact on the frequencies of the actual guitar.

Your ears are much better than mine. I like that hum can be reduced most of my audio is with acoustic through an interface.

As you say, it can be okay in the context of the mix. You can also try to move the position of the guitar and find a position where it adds less noise. Avoid to have sources on that will add noise. The default noise reduction in GB is not my favourite. Or maybe I miss something that can make it work more smooth. Great video boss!

ReaFir in reaper you can build a noise floor and then subtract it from the audio.

Good advice for sure or you could record a guitar with humbucking pickups? Like another viewer suggested I try to move slightly away form my Mac to slightly lessen it.

Have you tried shielding the electronic cavity of the guitars? I had that with my Telecaster, got some self adhesive copper tape and lined everything and the back of the pickguard. No hum!

Great idea ad it's SO easy, I did that with an old Cort Steinberger copy headless bass years back and it worked great!

What is the difference between using the Waves plugin vs. EQ in the highest frequencies? What I could (even) hear as hum was in the high frequency range.

the waves plugin doesn't eq the highs it actually downsamples

not so fond of the guitar tone at all but the singer seems to have a nice voice .. but thanks for the explanation (my half acoustic jazz guitar makes a lot of humming noise when plugged into the interface)
