A flashy experiment using a loudspeaker, online tone generator and ferrofluid + food dye-water mixture
The speaker needs to be able to play low frequences. Discant speakers wont work. I used Logitech computer speaker set with a 4" subwoofer the whole set priced at 30$. Place the speaker pointed upwards.
I used a Creme Bonjour creme cheese container, because its diameter is same size range as the speaker. The container needs to sit on the moving part of the speaker and it really helps that the size is similar with respect of the speaker - otherwise the container will move around. On the video I also use a metal lid from a candy box. I prefer the plastic container because it is lighter.
There are many tone generators around the net. I have used this one:

The cymatic patterns will show at around 0-300 hz range. Remember that humans won't be able to hear under 20hz.
Adding some desired color food dye to water will make the experiment
look even better. Using a syringe is convenient at this step. If you struggle to get the cymatic patterns to appear, there is most likely a problem with the container. It needs to sit gently on the moving part of speaker and balanced well enough. The volume doesn't need to be very loud at all to get the patterns visible. the depth of the water-food dye mixture was approx 1 cm
I used ferrofluid just because it is black - it gives a nice contrast next to colored water. Ferrofluid is just very expensive so you can try with any type of oil that floats on water. When using a mixture of food dyes and water the first drop of ferrofluid spreads out evenly to form a thin layer on the food dye-water mixture after this the second drop will stay together forming a black dot on the liquid. The cymatic surface currents look more distinct when using this second drop of ferrofluid. When done right this experiment looks really hypnotic. When the sound waves are observable, adding the ferrofluid or other oil on liquid will make surface currents visible. You can also try this with music - it will make an innovative and astonishing music video.
I like the pipette that comes with the container. It functions well and helps to avoid making a mess. I was fascinated by the way the oily effect makes the currents visible on the surface.

Goosebumps are just your body displaying (in a cymatic fashion) a response to something you resonate in harmony with.
Add tiny particles of iron or other elements into the water or mineral oil.. The particles isolate and create awesome physical structures.

frequency AND ...? (my aim was always simply to gather all the "facts" on which upon all the groups might agree) frequency does not mean anything in cymatics by itself ... the following determine the outcome:
1) Frequency
2) The material characteristics of the medium/s of sound wave propagation (air above the water and the water itself, or a metal sheet in the case of the sand particles method).
3) The shape of the medium or the 'chamber' in which the medium is placed (ie, glass is stored in a pipe of a certain radius, or a glass container of some sort). the dimensions of the cavity is important for the resonance, in this case the diameter of whatever that water storage thing is important, if you do this with a different diameter you will get a different result due to constructive and destructive interference of the waves, if the diameter is an a special multiple of the wavelength of the tone you will get constructive otherwise destructive interference
... resonance effects are highly diverse depending on the above factors, and this is why the sound chambers of certain musical instruments like drums or guitars, are all tuned to core resonant frequencies which correlate with what we discern as musical 'notes' (a science which is in itself totally subjective, to the point of being 'art' more than science). Thus, the image you get at a certain frequency in one particular physical apparatus, will be totally different in another apparatus. Examples
Think of a bell. Each independent circuit(coil) have a specific frequency in which it will keep vibrating with less resistance. That is the resonant frequency. In the case of a standing wave, it would be the frequency that would make it "bounce back" and repeat over itself , creating the standing wave.

Seems like colored oil would do the same. Seems pointless without a magnetic field included. Pressure waves are not magnetic. This is more to do with a viscosity differentials. My two cents...

Click on the cc button check the video from beginning again so you get the basics how I did the first timestamp, on second it's the same speaker and changed a metal cup instead of the plastic cup. In the final timestamp there is ball bearing on the metal cup + small neodymium magnet underneath. I also added some soap to the food dye, water, ferrofluid mixture.
What kind of speaker is used for such a setup? I'm interested in making something similar for testing at home.

The steel ball is magnetically attracted to the speaker magnet, but the container with liquid inside stays in place on its own weight when the volume is on reasonable setting.
Pls do this experiment: fill the spherical glass ball with very diluted spheromagnetic fluid or iron fillings impregnated with glass particles diluted in water ; next place small spherical magnet at centre of spherical glass bawl, next shine light into sphere, in dark, we could be able to see filed lines in 3d in glass bawl
