This song really helps you realise how every character is feeling, the Baudelaires have given up on their happiness and accepted that their story doesn't have a happy ending, Lemony just vents all his feelings for Beatrice and how his story had no real happy ending, so he's stuck telling everyone else's, Olaf has suffered so much abuse from life he's turned to the 'Dark Side' in order to push through and Mr Poe... Well, he just doesn't get other's sadness. Everyone in the world feels one of the four.
Count Olaf’s sad tone in the song makes me think there’s more to him, also because of his picture in the school. I feel like they mean to say with all his costumes that he hides behind a mask. He gives himself a role everytime, that now he lost sight of his real original self
Also because in the end, he used his energy to save his only true love and told them to take care of them. I actually cried when the ending came and Olaf died.
In this, I actually feel sorry for Count Olaf. When he sings the line: "...some people laugh I suppose...", it slightly breaks my heart! He really has had a disturbing and dark life for him to end up the way he is.
Timelord2011 i get the same feeling like he doesn't really want this deep down. i know he does but the way the lines are delivered its like he wants to not be this way
He doesn't seem miserable on this line though. Count Olaf knows nothing of joy, but is such a wretched man he doesn't even care. He "supposes" people laugh because he has no idea how or why they do it. But that doesn't means he won't despise them though. Count Olaf isn't much the product of an unhappy life, or even if it is, it is likely a life of perceived wrongs rather than actual cruelty towards him, just like he seems at times to sincerely believe the children are out there to do HIM wrong rather than the opposite. He is just one of those rare characters who are simply evil, regardless of context. It is hard to imagine, but he does warns the Baudelaires about it: "Your first impression of me may be that I am a terrible person. But in time, Baudelaires, I hope you'll come to realize... you haven't the faintest idea." That's my thought anyways. Tragic characters driven to awefulness are always interesting, but Olaf isn't one of them. Which makes him even more fascinating.

@@the_demon149 I think the ending was perfect. If it had been a full blown bad ending it would've been extremely frustrating and unfair, especially after everything the Baudelaires had been through. Fantastic first season, filled with amazing performances from every single actor. Keep it going Netflix, keep it going.
Villains are made, not naturally are they born. Sometimes life is hard and cruel enough to where evil is all that can be done, and scars them permanently.
I gotta think that perhaps Olafs response just from this song to someone calling his a villain would be that I may be the villain, but I couldn't be the hero and it was better then nothing

I like how Mr Poe looks so cheery while singing such mournful lyrics (He is way better at singing then I thought he would be). Here mournful means feeling, expressing, or inducing sadness, regret, or grief. :)
Honestly- this show is so heart-wrenching. I started watching it when I was eight, never regretted it. Count Olaf wasn’t nessicarily a bad guy, he was trying to right the wrongs the world gave him, though only caused more wrong. Violet and Kluas had been forced to grow too quickly and handle all the abuse the world handed them. Sunny never truly knew peace, as she was a baby during all this. Mr.Poe wasn’t ready to take on a case this serious, he didn’t have priorities in line, he wasn’t a detective or such, and he turned down each protest of truth the orphans gave him. The orphans were cursed from birth, given to parents whose wrong-doings would only ever tax their kids. The triplets had been in about the same case as the orphans, but got closer to a happy ending than the orphans did. The ending to the show was so amazing but in the end, only reminds you that nothing goes as intended. Everything that happened showed that no character here was a hero- They all committed their own wrong-doings, but none were a defined villain, they’d all acted as they had to in order to survive in this world.

Timelord2011, Tried watching it last night and I found myself pointing out the flaws and differences, on the bright side the happy little elf made me laugh and the aunt in the home with the wide window was closer to her book counterpart in appearance.
I am not satisfied ... I do not imagine Olaf in this way, the visual universe seems papier-mâché, I have no emotional empathy for the Baudelaire, and no real feeling of discomfort and disaster comes to invade me like in the books ... Netflix really wanted to make a light product for all the public. My series of unfortunate events is much darker and terrifying.
I loved this series a lot, I like how Count Olaf is treated sympathetically but the things he did are still treated as villainous throughout the story and how in the end the orphans still hate him but still treat him like a person. Count Olaf is a villain but a villain you can understand.
And for me him being probably the only adult in the series to truly help the orphans in a straightforward, actually useful and meaningful way sadly makes him better in a twisted way. (Seriously though how many people fell for this idiots shenanigans?) I honestly believe mr poe could've been shown as the real villian and I'd have bought it
@@Mrbleakneytrue. count olaf is obviously not intelligent or booksmart at all but he never fully underestimates or plays down the baudelaires the way the other adults do. in time he learns they’re capable and smart and understand the situations they’re in, and he treats them as such, even if he doesn’t say that out loud. he’s the only adult who rlly shows respect for their capabilities. which sucks for everyone involved but you know
Actually they were already developing s2 around the time the first trailers came out hopefully it'll be out soon I need more NPH as Count Olaf in my life he killed it
The actors and actresses in this are so AMAZING! They have to play very hard parts and they all played them perfectly and they were picked perfectly for the story. I still can't believe it's all done. After watching it 3 times I still cry.
im crying, how is this 7 years old..... it was (and still is) the best series ive ever seen, the actors, music, layouts, the comedy was peak!! its amazing how this show doesint have a bigger fanbase, it was a huge influence to many things after it.... literally my favorite show... ever... forever-
Love how Mr Poe coughing just cements the message of the song. You think he's going to finish his verse like everyone else, but he splutters and messes it up, not how the song is supposed to go.
So this is a safe place to say that this song made me cry, like both times I couldn't stop singing and crying- This show made me cry a lot I guess, that's what happens when a story gets to your heart
This show was wonderful. Each session was amazing, definitely my favorite show. I feel like count Olaf didn’t have enough love though. He was always my favorite character, and ever since I saw this episode I always had a thought he had a sad backstory- and he did. This was a great show.
I just realised something about why everyone is singing about how the story has no happy ending: Lemony - He was a witness to the ending of the story and knows it doesn’t end happily Olaf - Believes that he’s going to win in the end and get the Beaudelaire fortune and get away with his crimes The Beaudelaires - Losing hope on getting a happy ending after everything they’ve been through. Why is Mr. Poe singing? He obliviously thinks the orphans are safe and Count Olaf will be caught and arrested, he actually believes in the possibility of a happy ending.
In regard to Mr. Poe…. I see your point and to that I like to offer that his tone in singing the song and especially with his ending comment tells me that he is an idiot and oblivious to what is actually happening all around him. So on point for him

i have read the books when i was in elementary school and i never forgot about them. the story always lingered somewhere in the back of my mind at all times. it fascinated and at the same time devastated me and i always felt Count Olaf was misunderstood just as much as the poor Beaudelaires were collateral damage. it's a story that makes no sense, yet it's the perfect cautionary tale...just perfect! i jumped of joy once the movie came out but wasn't impressed. The netflix show however is the visualization i dreamed about while reading the tales...
There is so much soul in that first season. I think I can die happy knowing that the series captured the essence of the books. The only other film media that did this right was the LOTR. This song fits all the themes of the series. One of the best adaptations I ever got to enjoy
I just finished and now I am not able to find a good show so..... I planned to rewatch the entire show again (just could not find anything good as this on Netflix)
I just came back to tell everyone, even though you don't care, that I have literally watched the whole series 18-20 times over and over again. I also feel for Count Olaf, honestly, even after everything he's done, the terrible things, I still feel bad that he has to live that kind of life. At the end of the series, him dying right next to the one he really loved...it told us that Count Olaf was still human, and he felt the love he once knew right before death.
And that we all know what started this cycle of unfortunate events. It all started with something stolen which led to a schism The mysterious house fire that killed All Olaf's mother. The poison dart that was thrown by Beatrice baudelaire That poison dart was meant for Esme squalor. But that same poison dart instead ended up in the neck of Olaf's father and instantly died. Right in front of Olaf That also lead to stolen money and Olaf lost and all alone in the world. And all alone in the dark of the hidden passage of a tunnel system. And Olaf raised and mentored by the wrong people vowing vengeance upon the burdelaire family. Olaf with a accomplice but he did burn down the Manson It went after the Baudelaire Fortune. But the Baudelaire Fortune That actually turned out to be the remains of Olaf's fortune. that Olaf would be able to access it until Violet became of age 18 on her next birthday. But of course he was too impatient to wait so he found a loophole. That loophole was that if the legal guardian gave consenting permission to the child to marry. He would have control over the holding fortune and how it's used. So that Olaf is the legal guardian Olaf gave Violet a consent permission to marry. Regardless of our current age And I might add that Olaf said "After the marriage I wouldn't dispose of you like I would Klaus and sunny" Despite The trust issues Olaf did have integrity and a level of respect for violet so please keep that in mind. Olaf did show affection and fondness of violet. And I am lost this series more than once in the scene with Olaf dies violet seems genuinely distraught by his death. You can just tell that violet is the squad over Olaf's death by her calm but sad demeanor her said eyes in the way he closes his eyes. Violet Baudelaire was secretly in love with Olaf
I cannot wait on how they'll put Olaf's connection with the Baudelaire's parents. I mean they way he casually said he was the one who took the picture of their parents in the piano, there's something alright!
Some people express pity for Count Olaf's "Some people laughs I suppose", thinking he's miserable feeling empathy towards him. But that's not true. While we expect someone saying this to feel that way, it's exactly how he suckers people. Olaf's face doesn't show misery at this point, but subtle contemps. He is such as wretched, joyless man that he doesn't even feel loss from it: he despises laughter, rather than desiring it. He is pitiful, but does not deserve sympathy.
Then we need to ask the question, why? Why is Olaf such a joyless, wretched man? How did he become this way? No one is born wicked. Maybe he was moulded into that shape by his parents, the VFD ,or what happened to HIS parents ( insinuates in book that Beatrice Baudelaire killed Olafs parents with a box of poison darts). And also, you could say then that at the end of the books that the Baudelaire children deserve no sympathy either after they set fire to the hotel at the end, as it does also insinuate that people died. A villian in one man's story is a hero in another, depends how you look at it.This is what I always got from the books; not everything is black and white, and there is good and bad bits to everyone, and nothing is ever as it seems.
He’s an orphan as well. And his parents were killed by the Baudelaires with a box of poison darts, slipped to them by someone in the Snicket family. I’m pretty sure most people wouldn’t like the people who helped kill the two most important people of their childhood
Apart from how touching, emotional (and sad) this song is, it's such a lovely composed tune. Melancholic and that chorus in really stays in your head. :) The actress who plays Violet also really sings well!
This song encompasses the series so well, even if they did prevail, it was such a bittersweet ending. The villain we hated and loved is dead and gone, revealed that he could have been a nice man, had a happy life, but all because of an accident, he’s now just dead and gone, along with an incredibly kind soul. The people we followed through the entire show are okay yes, but their future is incredibly uncertain, and with how horrible their lives were, it’s not like they’ll be well developed adults. The song itself is so perfectly both slightly hopeful but also very melancholic, exactly like the show. “Melancholic” means an expressful or pensive, lasting sadness, a feeling that can last for a while, or be part of what a piece of art is.
Clearly this story is going to have a major plot twist, most likely including the narraroter because of the picture of him and count Olaf. Also the parents still might be alive, we know that the darn series makers tricked us with those parents that aren't even the bouldariers, but before montey died, who put the message in the movie, who rang the guy at cloud burger, who are the narrators enemies we see when he shouts fire, what is the tattoo on count olafs leg, what importance does that judge lady have, who is the statue that gets that "thing" back from count Olaf, who are the other children, why are there eyes everywhere, and last but not least (about 2nd most important next to what relationship does the narrarator have to count Olaf) is who is Beatrice. Please like and comment so I don't get lost in the mysterious and magical place called the comment section) (copy and paste if you like, mine is the original but everyone is gonna say that lol)
icy igor they answer all of that in the show you just have to look like the narrator (lemony snicket) was presumed dead so he did that to try to throw the people who are after them they are possibly private investigators due to the lemony snicket drug accusation back in 2007
Don't worry all of those questions will be answered... at least they are in the book. And they are very interesting and satisfactory answers. Won't let you down
I loved the end of the series, Ive watched it so many times. I didn’t know that the girls voice was Violet, but she, Klaus, Lemony, count Olaf and Mr.Poe have such good voices. Good job everyone from the series, it was the best series ever!!

You may think that the Baudelaires ought to prevail and be tucked someplace all safe and sound
Count Olaf captured and rotting in jail
His hench-people nowhere around
But there's no happy endings, not here and not now
This tale is all sorrows and woes
You dream that justice and peace win the day but that's not how the story goes
You might think that two parents both brave and both true would live to a nice ripe old age
But I'm sad to say I have bad news for you
The curtain rings down on the stage

there are some very fantastic deviations from the books but it enhanced the story, making it a great first season.
D Brooke, Much better than the film.
Paladin Boyd Oh yes. But I personally still love the film for what it is.
Lily Jean well it is produced by the writer of the books, so this is his vision of the books in tv format

hearing this I think that Olaf has a sad background...

Fabio Picillo. Olaf was messed up bad by the Baudelaires
also his parents were murdered

Violet`s solo so touching. I agree

Same mate
I loved this series a lot, I like how Count Olaf is treated sympathetically but the things he did are still treated as villainous throughout the story and how in the end the orphans still hate him but still treat him like a person. Count Olaf is a villain but a villain you can understand.
And for me him being probably the only adult in the series to truly help the orphans in a straightforward, actually useful and meaningful way sadly makes him better in a twisted way. (Seriously though how many people fell for this idiots shenanigans?) I honestly believe mr poe could've been shown as the real villian and I'd have bought it
@@Mrbleakneytrue. count olaf is obviously not intelligent or booksmart at all but he never fully underestimates or plays down the baudelaires the way the other adults do. in time he learns they’re capable and smart and understand the situations they’re in, and he treats them as such, even if he doesn’t say that out loud. he’s the only adult who rlly shows respect for their capabilities. which sucks for everyone involved but you know
Violet breaks my heart here :(
I know right.I wish I could meet her in person, even this story isn't really real.
Her solo lines are so sad..you can just see as if she were on the verge of breaking, just trying to hold the tears back.

Traveller in the Dark yup
Mr . Poe is by far the happiest person. oh and SUNNY!
To be fair Sunny appears to be the most chill of them I mean she's trapped in a cage miles off the ground and just rolls her eyes and plays poker
Mr Critical I know it’s a year late but she was not miles off the ground it’s about 100 feet. Miles would be very high
Mr Poe is often happy out of ignorance, which i find actually really sad.
UntemperedLink yeet
I hate Mr.Poe More then Count Olaf ;-;
This show is so good that made me want to go read the books.
Good decision, the books are amazing.
the books are the best
What do you mean? There are pictures for every chapter
Oh true lol
Miguel Martins same here
This is an amazing example of how much it takes to truly sing. Neil sings everybody under the table.
This is just sad...
This is the first time a sad ending hit me
Violet's part and Count Olaf's part really got to me 😢 can't wait for season 2 tho
The ending song kinda made me tear up it really is a depressing show in reality

Yeah, they don't hold back
Season 2 would be a Very Fruitful Decision for Netflix.

Love how Mr Poe coughing just cements the message of the song. You think he's going to finish his verse like everyone else, but he splutters and messes it up, not how the song is supposed to go.
His coughing is hinting at the fact that he is unfit to help

I was hoping so much we'd have another musical number at the end of Season 2. Such a shame.

Damn I can’t believe it’s been seven years since this absolute banger dropped
This show was wonderful. Each session was amazing, definitely my favorite show.
I feel like count Olaf didn’t have enough love though. He was always my favorite character, and ever since I saw this episode I always had a thought he had a sad backstory- and he did.
This was a great show.
I just realised something about why everyone is singing about how the story has no happy ending:
Lemony - He was a witness to the ending of the story and knows it doesn’t end happily
Olaf - Believes that he’s going to win in the end and get the Beaudelaire fortune and get away with his crimes
The Beaudelaires - Losing hope on getting a happy ending after everything they’ve been through.

Easily my favorite part of the series in a series that was just excellently done.
i have read the books when i was in elementary school and i never forgot about them. the story always lingered somewhere in the back of my mind at all times. it fascinated and at the same time devastated me and i always felt Count Olaf was misunderstood just as much as the poor Beaudelaires were collateral damage. it's a story that makes no sense, yet it's the perfect cautionary tale...just perfect! i jumped of joy once the movie came out but wasn't impressed.

This song gets me crying and i swear all of their voices are BEAUTIFUL

@@mangalahegde9942 same,Not Even Nostalgic TV Shows On Netflix Can Be as Good As Asoue.
Right in front of Olaf
That also lead to stolen money and Olaf lost and all alone in the world.
Regardless of our current age
And I might add that Olaf said
"After the marriage I wouldn't dispose of you like I would Klaus and sunny"
Despite The trust issues Olaf did have integrity and a level of respect for violet so please keep that in mind.
Count Olaf is my favorite character
He’s an orphan as well. And his parents were killed by the Baudelaires with a box of poison darts, slipped to them by someone in the Snicket family. I’m pretty sure most people wouldn’t like the people who helped kill the two most important people of their childhood
@@chocolatecake04 Correction: Beatrice killed his father. His mother died in a fire.
This is one of the best shows I ever watched. My regards to the beaudelairs
Love Malina Weissman singing that!

Apart from how touching, emotional (and sad) this song is, it's such a lovely composed tune. Melancholic and that chorus in really stays in your head. :) The actress who plays Violet also really sings well!
And underrated show.
Count Olaf can sing well
It's Neil Patrick Harris, of course he can sing well
@@MonkeyButtMovies1 Yup, and he also sings the opening theme.
Who else hated count Olaf but were nearly crying when he died
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THE FULL SONG. I am a huge fan and the last part always got cut of.

Violet has a great acting career ahead of her. So much beauty, talent and charisma.
Olaf is singing it like a lesson long since learnt
I came back for nostalgia, and was not disappointed
They did such an incredible job with this series.
Please like and comment so I don't get lost in the mysterious and magical place called the comment section) (copy and paste if you like, mine is the original but everyone is gonna say that lol)
icy igor they answer all of that in the show you just have to look like the narrator (lemony snicket) was presumed dead so he did that to try to throw the people who are after them they are possibly private investigators due to the lemony snicket drug accusation back in 2007
Ok so thank might be the answer to: who are his enemies, but we still have other questions
Don't worry all of those questions will be answered... at least they are in the book. And they are very interesting and satisfactory answers. Won't let you down
read the books
