  • Losing a job is never easy, no matter the profession. It something a lot of people go through during their career. But why is it especially frustrating for pilots? Why is it life changing? What can pilots do about it? The media loves to talk about aviation, pilots, pilot salaries, etcetera. Those articles and headlines are rarely in the advantage of pilots and are never accurate or complete. Logical right, as they are written by people who do not work for airlines or are involved in the aviation industry at all. However, they do influence the public opinion, YOU. In this video I discuss the different groups we have at the moment and provide some accurate information about our life as an airline pilot. What I think everyone needs to know. I also provide future pilots, student pilots and graduated pilots the advice/my opinion I promised in my previous video.
    - Pilots that are still employed
    - Pilots with experience that lost their jobs
    - Pilots that are still in training or recently graduated
    - People that dream of becoming a pilot

One way to avoid the fees of training is to join your National Air Force to become a Fighter Pilot, it'll be covered but it will delay your career by a decade or more as being a Fighter Pilot will make you more attractive to an Airline as there are many aircraft people could fly in the Military

I’m nearing the end of my 35 year airline career. There have been many setbacks, oil prices, 911, gulf wars, age 65, to name a few. I’m minimally affected but I foresee permanent changes ahead. I would encourage all those in the beginning of their careers to persevere. There will always be a need to travel by air and robot pilots will never be reliable enough to make them financially viable. Five years from now there will be another huge pilot shortage but this time there will be no pilots in the pipeline. Good luck to all of you and remember, take care of your passengers and crew and you’ll be fine.

I started flying when I was 20 and now, 30 years later, I am looking forward to retirement. In the beginning of my career, I purposely avoided things like mortgages while my friends in other walks of life, began to settle down. It was a sacrifice but it paid off in the longer term. As many pilots know, sometimes you need to take a step backwards in order to make two steps forward. For those who were “tied down” many opportunities were lost because they could not afford to relocate or they were forced to abandon their dream all together. The past decade has seen tremendous growth but aviation has always been an industry of cycles. One piece of advice an old Captain once gave me when I was starting out was to enjoy the journey because if you get to the Airlines and it isn’t what you thought it would be, you will become very bitter. I love my job as a Widebody Captain for a national airline but I wouldn’t trade my journey of ups and downs to get here for anything. This is an unprecedented time but every red light eventually turns green again. And remember, us old guys are leaving!

    Captain Hoolie here,
Fortunate enough to start my career at FedEx after having a military career. That’s my background, but I must say after experiencing this Covid era and what has gone on, flying cargo should be at the top of your list. In the past 23 years I’ve experienced 9/11, gulf war number two, the economic downturn of 08, and COVID-19 and all the numerous bankruptcies that hit the passenger carriers over the past 20 years. Flying cargo has always been the safe move and has afforded me a constant paycheck that (knock on wood) will stand the test of any future calamities!
As I fly today over the Asian skies, it is very quiet except for all the “cargo flying call signs” I hear on the radio. If you want to have a better chance at a long-term career in aviation as a pilot, I can’t say it enough, “CARGO, CARGO, CARGO!”

Thank you for your service (although I am not an American myself) and for the comment. I've always wanted to hear a cargo pilots opinion on this matter and to hear that the cargo industry is as stable as I imagined it to be is a relief. I'm a dual nationality 18-year old who has moved 4 times in 3 different countries, as well as someone who wants to pursue the career of a pilot. I still have my assessment dates booked in Belgium with CAE, and the idea of becoming a long haul cargo pilot has been a dream of mine since I realized that aviation was my passion. This comment alone just gave me another boost to stick with my dream of becoming a pilot and training to do so, despite these extremely hard circumstances.

Media can not be accurate on all things. There is just a limited amount of people working in this and they are not specialised in everything. On top of that they have to explain things understandable for the masses and in a limited frame, like 5 minute video or 1000 words. Of course they can only scratch the surface and without deeper knowledge tend to the stuff that sells their product. The result is coverage which every insider describes as inaccurate at least in every topic you look at.
And that is assuming a good journalist and a honest approach to a topic. Not like BILD or similar yellow press.
It is a dilemma that cannot be solved.
So be aware that your own understanding of media may not be accurate as well.

Few months ago i was seriously thinking about starting my flight training, but this crisis changed everything. But this lockdown made me wiser about my way to the cockpit. I need to tell you something about those little white x's on the light panels. Yes, if the lights in a panel are not lit, sometimes pushing on the white x will get the lights to come back on. You shouldn't do this too often or too hard. Behind that white x is a small plug that plugs into the airplane panel wiring. If you push hard and don't tighten the screws holding the panel up, you risk breaking the solder joints connected to that tiny plug. Connected to that tiny white x are soldered on wire runs that go to the tiny "peanut" bulbs (28 volts or 5 volts) that light up the panel. By pushing hard, you risk shorting or disconnecting these runs from the light bulbs meaning the panel will not light again, until fixed by a mechanic. I've fixed many of these panels by tightening the screws to the light plate panel or by resoldering the connections to that white x.

He was very frank and matter-of-fact about beginning a commercial pilot career so far behind the competitive curve and made many of the same points you do in your discussion. I relegated myself to being perfectly happy flying privately and taking the occasional aerial photography job, instead. My compliments for sharing such a refreshingly realistic view of the industry today. I don't envy the "unknowns" you and others in the industry are facing these days. Well done!

I just found this video whilst browsing other aviation stuff and think it a valuable 11 minutes spent despite it being too late in life for me. It is well thought out and the information put over in a very pleasant manner.
The advice about advice (!) being based on perspective is spot on. Think about it, we all do the same. When asked for advice, no matter how reasonable we think we are ourselves, we can only create comments wholly or at least partly based on our own experiences.
So with that caveat, I can give you some of mine, but take them with the questioning attitude that you think necessary!
I recently retired at 65 and can look back on my 40yrs airline pilot experience with pride and near total pleasure. I was fortunate in that I only experienced one Company folding during my employment. But things were very different 40 years ago. No matter what line of work you followed, then, you expected (wrongly) for the career to be a continuous and stable and fair one. Because that is how things had been even before those distant days. We always base our judgements on History, biased with perception!
    Two things to remember.
    1. The job market for pilots is pure supply and demand, and to a certain extent that goes for terms and conditions too. And the supply and demand are usually a bit out of phase.
    2. There is good luck and bad luck. There is also shit luck which is where many people are at the moment. On a lifetime scale I guess it all averages out so many of you are deserving and will get better fortune, but who knows when.
To expand on terms and conditions. If at the stage of considering this career, I suggest that you do not focus on salaries. Difficult to ignore the optimism of “hey, in 20yrs time I could be a longhaul Captain on £150K”.
Back in the 1980s all UK pilots wanted to fly for Cathay Pacific. Unbelievable money and tax rate 15% and this was before the property prices went crazy out there. But look at that airline now, a shadow of itself and of course the Hong Kong nightmare of present. I would think that t&cs for pilots are likely to move in the wrong direction for at least a decade. And then who knows? Maybe planes will get so automated that the authorities accept just one pilot, think what that would do to the job market. I don’t see it myself because I always felt the need for someone sharper than me in the RHS to bounce ideas off. But it is a fact that the skill needed to be a pilot has reduced due computer driven systems. That may have a diluting effect on t&cs. It can also have an effect on how satisfying you find the job to be.
To continue on supply and demand. When I started flying and got myself a PPL through working at two jobs and scrimping and saving it was the mid seventies. There had just been a war in the middle east and as a result the oil price quadrupled (from memory) almost overnight. Airlines went bust. BOAC laid up their thirsty B707s and VC10s etc etc.To be honest I wasn’t really that aware of any of this (naivety and optimism of youth!) and I focussed on proceeding to the heady heights of a CPL. The airline industry looked almost finished, to go the way of the ocean liners method of transatlantic transport. I thought I would try and get a cropsprayer job, preferably in UK rather than Africa which seemed the only other option. In fact as things turned out, (good luck) a few airlines started to recruit for the first time in 2 or 3 years just as I finished my self sponsored studies for the CPL. I was in!
Now the same MAY happen in the 2020s, but like any good pilot you have to plan ahead (for what if they don’t). This period looks as bad as that war in the 1970s and the 9/11 tragedy. We came back from that.
History is no provider of valuable predictions.
Have another skill/qualification as a back up. (I found that quite a few copilots I worked with had internet based enterprises going). That doesn’t necessarily mean a degree which is expensive and not directly applicable to flying anyway.
If starting training don’t pay too much in advance in case the flight school goes bust.
    Be realistic.
Good luck to all. You deserve it.

From an old, about to retire airline pilot:
I graduated from college with all of my ratings in 1978. Since then I have done nothing but fly for a living. It took me 9 years to get my airline job. I was both a civilian and military pilot, and I had about 5,000 hours and was flying C-130 transports when I was hired. I made $19,000 my first year., at a major airline. I made $21,000 my second year and $23,000 my third. These were the days of the B-scale. I was at the airline for 8 years, 17 years after getting my degree and ratings, before my pay topped $100,000. I made Captain, and after a few years, my pay topped $200,000. I was finally a rich airline pilot. Then 9/11 happened, my airline declared bankruptcy and my pay was cut 40%. It stayed that way for the next 10 years. I was one of the lucky ones, I was never furloughed or bumped out of my seat. I have flown with many a first officer who had been furloughed two and three times. The U.S. airlines have to keep all their employees through September because of the deal made with the government, but come October, unless things magically turn around, expect to see the largest furlough in the history of the airline industry. I have two years left, I won't get furloughed. I'm hoping that number one, my airline survives, and two, it will take at least that long for them to cut my pay in half again. By the way, I averaged what I have made since college graduation, and the answer is $130,437 per year, a number larger than I thought it would be, but not an exceptional number. I have been a Captain for 24 years.
I have two children in college. They know what has happened in my career. Neither one of them is a pilot, and that makes me happy. My advice to them, which I will now give to you is: Don't go into a career where you can't lose or leave your job, go somewhere else, and ,make as much if not more than the job you just left. The irony of an airline career is that it is indeed a career right up until the day you sign on with a major airline, at which point it becomes a job. You, jn essence, marry your company and you are with it for better or worse, in bankruptcy and in health, for richer or for poorer, so long as you both shall live. This is a feast or famine industry, always has been and always will be. In my 33 years with the airline, we are now suffering the second event that has caused our customers to essentially disappear, just when things were going really well. If you really want to be a pilot, please do, we need pilots. The job is indeed fun, but don't expect it to be secure.

I disagree being a pilot is a tiring job. What tires you in a job is when you are given lots of responsibilities without authority, boss looking over your shoulders, bad supervisor etc but as a pilot, at least if you are lucky to work for a major Western, you are literally the CAPTAIN of that ship, you are, required, to have authority and seldom questioned. The union protects you and they can't force you to work, more tiring hours, than the law prescribes. If you work for a regional, or a third world country's, well, that's more murky. I just don't know how you guys can sit there for hours at a time without dozing off ^) Airlines will come back, when vaccine is available, a couple of years is about right, so I agree, get ready if you are really into this.

Being a pilot is a difficult and demanding job that requires constant studying and training, complete alertness
at all times. It is a job that does not forgive mistakes.A job that sometimes makes you pay for other peoples mistakes.Lately pilots haven't been payed well and it is slowly and steadily becoming a job for adventurers
with no room for families and family life. For some reason airlines prefer to fill up their planes with cheap tickets antagonizing each other and claim that there isn't enough money to pay pilots decent wages.

If you cannot take the rigors of these professions you do not have any passion, and FYI: A pilot flies about 800 to 900 hours a year. That's a very nice lifestyle considering you're flying free and with time anything comes easy.

His wife is a flight attendant with a major U.S. airline who was furloughed in April, after she was ill and recovered from Covid-19! Last week my son took a job with one of the larger private business lease operators and soon will be flying right seat in a Citation X. Although he will be making less money to start, we all feel that he landed on his feet. He's grateful to again be doing what he loves, and can stop worrying about making his mortgage payments. Sage advice DPG. After 45 years in the industry I have seen a lot. Airlines will always be cyclical. Ask most airline pilots today and many have been furloughed at least once. Like the fallout from 9/11 and economics of ‘98 stock crises, it took two- three years to get back going only for 2008 economic crises. Each time the industry has rebounded and it will again. Keep doing what you are doing. Work hard to attain your goals, good things come to those who do.

I wanted to become a pilot in 1974 & the cost was for a commercial licence was about $1,200 CDN incl flying hours. I was in another career in 1995 where I met a 747 pilot who retired making $160K in his final year. However, since the crazy fuel prices of 20+ years ago & losses of major airlines (TWA, Eastern, Pan-Am, etc), saw pilot salaries freeze or cut, especially regionals. In the meantime, training costs increased. Hopefully, this pandemic situation will end soon. Good luck to you DPG & all other pilots. I was fortunate enough my career allowed me to take a lot of different training so I became more valuable & could be moved within my company thus keeping a steady cheque & helping my pension.

Banks should suffer with their customers. Any aid relief given to banks should be dependent on the banks relief given to their customers.

I have never given up that dream of the pilot's license, and never will. I dreamed of it as a child, and have been flying as a passenger, without family, since I was eleven. I grew up near an airfield, and never refused the chance to go up at any time. I have been up in everything from Cessna 150s to jumbo jets. I once flew in a "laker." Now that is a different flying experience. I looked at the military career, but at 6'3" I am way to big for many military aircraft. Now retired, I have the time to study and take lessons, and even though I will not get my license until my mid-Sixties, the thought of airflight still thrills me like it did when I was a boy.

You speak a very good truth that is refreshing on social media. It is also nice to see someone who has logic about how to deal with your life, We are starting to lose that in a lot of areas. I hope a lot take what is true from your little chat.

Don’t know why, but lately each time you start your videos by saying « I hope you are all doing well today » I expect you to say « I hope you’re doing absolutely fantastic ». 😳😄

Truly unbelievable for someone with such abilities. I spoke to a Dutch pilot in Sweden during a domestic flight. He was very happy to be able to do this kind of work in Sweden. Indeed, because then he could pay his bills.

I recently just finished my flight training with ATP flight school and started working at an international flight school as a CFI near the end of February. Right as I began picking up students the COVID19 lockdowns began. Most of my students have either been recalled or left back for their country because of family and border closures. Those students who are still here are stuck as they are unable to return home. I currently am no longer making a livable wage as a CFI and has forced me to look for non aviation employment to put food on the table for my family. Currently trying to find ways to keep me flying as doing it full time is not viable. This event was unprecedented for many of us looking to join the airlines. All I can say is do what you gotta do and take care of yourself and your family first. That seniority number will have to wait a few years. Stay safe everyone!

I’m 22 years old and i’m already a year and a half into my pilot training here in the Philippines. Truly, the damage caused by the pandemic got me having second thoughts about continuing my training or landing a different job with my bachelor’s degree instead. I’m anxious about a lot of things: not being able to have enough funds to sustain my training and losing the skills i earned in training to name a few. But I'm glad I came across this video, it somehow kept the dream alive. Hoping and praying that I still get to see the day I become an airline pilot. Thank you so much for this, Capt. Safe skies and don't get sick 💙

All of that and other challenges. For a helicopter pilot. Especially for us who spend our time flying tourists.

@DutchPilotGirl - lovely video with impeccable view of the market, in my opinion. I’ve decided to go modular and am presently doing my PPL. The sector will bounce back again, as it always has. Happy landings 🙌🏻

My friend is a senior captain for an international airline flying the Dreamliner, he lost his job due to Covid-19. He didn't see it as a setback, went immediately to truck driving school and now he is driving trucks across the US. Being resilient and flexible, that is very admirable. Wish you the best.

I'm finishing up my commercial multi training right now - subscribed because of this video. Love the part where you talk about not wasting opportunities that come up. I had an opportunity come up for my flight training and I took it, and there have been times (like now) when I've questioned whether I made the right choice. But the thing to do is just keep pushing on, and I know that everything will work out in the end.

Unfortunately, when I got my private pilot's license at the age 37, I was told that I was too old to aspire to an airline career, and I stopped there. Now I'm 68 and trying to get my instrument and commercial ratings in order to at least buy myself an single engine airplane to use as a taxi with the flying years I have left. I know I'm going to spend good money on it, but I think it's worth it to follow your dreams, even at my age. I know I shouldn't have listened to those who gave me bad advice, but I'm going to look forward from now on. Good luck with your airline career!
