I got the game when I was 8 out of a bargain cut-out bin at Bargain/Liquidation store in my little town sometime back in the late 90's...think it was 1999 honestly. Got it for $5 along with Batman The Animated Series on SNES for another $5, great scoop on that one too. Played Pagemaster a lot over the next few years and I think I beat sometime in 2003 for the first time. Didn't play it again really until I did this playthrough video. Was an absolute pleasure relearning and replaying it, had been far too long. A very fun and vastly underrated game from my childhood as well!
Always get a little sad & nostalgic when looking back at my favourite childhood games, Always wonder where did all the cartridges end up, where are all the kids now grown adults that used to love this, do they still look at the game with fondness, a waste of time or is a forgotten memory altogether.
My cousin had this game I spent alot of time at his house growing up, they had a drawer full of snes games and for some reason it smelt good like old 90s games smell idk maybe it was the wood that made the cabinet but I can smell that smell when I think of this game and donkey kong country, mega man x, super Mario rpg, star fox idk... I'm old (30) apparently
I envy you in a way, my mom never really played games with me, even though she was the one that got me the movie and this game way back when lol! Gaming was more of a "me and dad" thing if anything. Glad it brings back some nostalgic memories for you, kinda why I keep doing these videos honestly at this point.
Pagemaster was sort of the original Kingdom Hearts. Boy goes on a quest through different worlds with tag-along characters and meets famous public domain characters of classic literature and fairy tales.
I actually quite like the movie. I think under different circumstances it would have been a success, and it's far from being a "bad" movie as many paint it.
It's not the easiest game or area of the game for sure. I had forgotten about the multiple paths and exits when I ended replaying the game for this video so yeah it was a pretty instant reminder to some of the slightly more frustrating aspects of the game at times lol!
I always enjoyed this game it was the first one my eldest sister got me for Christmas. I always thought there were more to it like hidden secret areas and alternative ending but after playing for years on it was just as it is. Still a fun game though.
I grew up with the SNES version and when I acquired a Sega copy years later I do agree that the SNES version was a bit more superior. Granted, I have not played a lot of the Sega version either so its possible (yet unlikely) that the view point could change...but its rather doubtful lol!
Fantasy's Wand would have been a more useful weapon pick-up then what you get in the Fantasy Land section of the game. At least the Sword in Adventure Land was accurate to the movie lol!
Add in a touch of Dragon indigestion and you got yourself a competent platforming level from the 90's lol! The only thing I can think of them being is all the knights the dragon devoured and the branches from the book that Macauly Culkin uses to escape and kill the dragon with at the end of the movie. That's all I got there for now lol!
I've had it since I was little and once I beat when I hit my preteens I didn't touch it again really until I did this video. Was a real pleasure replaying it again since I had totally forgotten how much I used to have with it, especially trying to find alternate exits and navigating the overworld paths as a result. Very underrated...

Would be soooooo nice if they actually went and made a sequel. Who cares about the reception it got when it was released, that still didn't stop it from becoming a beloved cult classic. I have a very good idea on what the sequel would play out.
The funny thing is the movie actually made me go and want to read all the books that got mentioned in the movie, which I did later on in life. Would have been cool if they had some voice samples of them in the game. Missed opportunity I think...
lol, I remember back in the day, there was some contest in the Wherehouse if I could spot the baby in a display for Baby's Day Out. I located it and this was the prize.
Personally I like that they faithfully incorporated some the background details from the movie into the game like having all the platforms and such made of books and having the EXIT sign being visible in the distance in Horror Land etc.
I grew up with this version and picked up copy of the Sega Genesis version a few years back and it does seem that at least visually this game got more attention for sure. Now which one is better is hard to say since I'm not very familiar with the Sega one. One day I'm sure I'll sit down and really give it a go but I'll stay with this one for now lol!

Understandable, it doesn't really tell you what to do, what things are and what they do and it can occasionally lead to a rather trying and difficult time in spots that's for sure. Hell, it certainly did for me for years lol!

Battle long john silver and his parrot and his pirates the monster's fist giant squid and the big bad wolf using the sword bag of bouncy eyeballs sheild climbable slime hidden books and enchanted dust
Huge missed opportunity to have a boss battle or two in the game like beating Mr Hyde, or dodging Moby Dick and battling the Dragon at the end. My only real criticism of the game nowadays honestly.
@@RentalRewindGaming Alternatively, they could have the Dragon as the end boss of each world, manifesting as a Slime Dragon (similar to its liquid-like form at the beginning of the movie) at the end of Horror World, a Sea Dragon at the end of Adventure World, and its true form at the end of Fantasy World with the knight skeleton's sword as Richard's weapon which would be exclusive to these boss fights and cannot be lost by getting hit and that both him and the Dragons would have health bars (similar to the boss fights from Puggsy).
Well I just re-watched all the dragon levels and the only thing I screw up is the timed bonus game. If it would have counted as a life lost, therefore not a deathless run then all my pickups would have been lost immediately so I do not count it at all since that did not happen.
When I first got it when I was 8 I certainly thought the same thing. I beat it when I was 13 and then never touched it again until this playthrough video. Was pleasantly surprised to find that it was nowhere near as tough as I remembered, granted having blown through games like Contra, all the Castelvania's, Battletoads, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out etc. it didn't seem so hard lol. But as a first time pick up and play it was certainly a tough cookie that's for sure. The memory remains I guess you could say lol!
Yeah...I was pretty disappointed in that too. They could have added a Mr. Hyde battle, a Moby Dick sequence and a battle with the dragon as well. Especially the dragon since it was the climax of the movie and it was featured on the poster and all the advertisement material as well. A let down for sure sadly...
