Hello Elliott! I am no expert by any means, but one of my hobbies is a race called the Gambler 500. You buy a car for $500, race it 500 miles off-road, and the finish line is a junkyard for all the cars that don't make it. Obviously my cars are not full restorations, and they're in far worse shape than yours. However I will say that I was surprised how fast the cost of all the small incremental parts added up. Things like fluids, belts, and anything rubber should really be replaced if you intend to make it fully reliable. The #1 piece of advice I can give is to do a compression check on all 6 cylinders before you commit any money to the project (I speak from experience on this). If the engine is bad that obviously raises the effort and cost significantly. My second piece of advice is to space the major work out and keep the car drivable for as long as possible. Once again, speaking from experience, when you do something like pull the engine out and the car just sits, you lose a LOT of your enthusiasm for the project. I suspect that many of the abandoned project cars languishing in barns and sheds suffered this fate. One benefit you have is living in the UK, parts and spares should be more available. However 1977 was a long time ago and the Reliant Sceptre is no Mini or MG. What I mean is that things like interior and exterior trim, bumpers, and other model specific things might be hard to source.
Hey Elliot, that’s so cool you want to get into restoring old cars! I recently started on an eerily similar project and I can tell you, it’s so much fun to learn about everything. Don’t worry to much about that rust, on my car it’s way worse and in way worse of spots but I know it’s all fixable. I wish you luck finding a good place to work on your beautiful car. I can’t wait for more update videos in the future!
It's a quirky car in a beautiful colour. It looks clean and solid and a good place to start from. You will kick yourself if you sell it :P I really don't think the chassis needs stripping, just give the underneath a good coat of underseal.
@@alessandromazzini7026 the thing is, while us car enthusiasts love to drive, cars are after all just tools to get you from A to B. Hey Elliot, I’m a mechanic, none of that rust looks to bad at all, to start if there’s no salt on your roads I’d buy a engine degreaser or heavy duty degreaser of some kind and pressure wash the engine bay if you want it to look nice, wouldn’t mind at all helping you out if you had some mechanical questions, but I’m not an expert on that car particularly.
This is a rare and beautiful car. This is a fantastic opportunity to strategically diversify the contents of your channel bringing new visitors. You just need to find the place to do it. Cheers
My god, Wolfrace rims! I don't remember any other cars that came stock with those apart from the S1 Lotus Esprit. I'm 50 and this makes me so nostalgic for the 70's. That really does deserve a full restoration including a bare metal respray.
Man that's pretty. My Grandad had a MK2 Triumph Stag in British Racing Green which I was hoping I'd inherit one day, but sadly, it ended up rotting away in his garage because he couldn't afford to maintain it. He ended up selling it to a guy who had been badgering my grandad to sell it to him for years, last I heard he was restoring it to keep. I'd love to have enough money to buy it from him, the sentimental value is so high for me.
Man. Solid base to start off with for sure! They all have their issues and yours is definitely that roll bar/seatbelt mount. Don't be put off by toffs in clubs telling you it's terrible and such man. Just because they have concourse examples they never drive doesn't mean yours i scrap in comparison! It's going to not only teach you what you need to know but also provide you with an amazing tourer, track car, show car and even daily driver!
What have you gone and done? Good luck Elliot. Stateside here, I have a 1972 VW Beetle. It looks like you have a pretty reasonable platform to build from. It's good you have support of a family member to work with. That will be very helpful in keeping the motivation level where it needs to be as you work through the issues. Peace.
I love this, pal. 💚 I too, had a green (although mine was dark green) 6a a few years ago. I loved that car so much, and still kick myself for selling it. It now resides in Germany with an enthusiast who I've become good friends with. Just please be careful what you wish for. 👌 Good luck, with whatever road you decide to take it down. 🤞
Underhood and frame look solid, that B pillar loop definitely needs replaced. Could stand for a fresh suspension setup, control arms, shocks, maybe a rack and pinion, wheel bearings, steering knuckles, etc. Besides that it looks great!
Look out for the fibre teeth on the timing cog at the front; it'll break and bend the valves. Also the trunnion's on the front suspension are a weak point. Loved my old SE6 (not 6a) but council towed it away ad scrapped it while I was in hospital for 6 months in 1980/81. Enjoy this project while you can (and young enough to enjoy it) and Stay Safe.
Those Scimitars look superb and fibreglass means less rust too. Good solid Ford Essex V6 engine as well. When I was younger I had a Dutton fibreglass car with a Ford Kent Crossflow engine. Hours of fun tinkering with it. I’m sure you’ll enjoy that project. 👍
Great slotmags. Finally started cutting rust off my morris minor project. It looks okay tbh. Requires a full strip an rebuild, most of that surface dust looks treatable and not needing major repair...
What a lovely car! I just LOVE Birtish automotive "manufacture" from 70s and 80s! I'm looking forward for car restoration project videos! Good luck! That surface rust - i am almos sure, that there will be some holes after you'll remove it, however - go ahead and dig into the project. There will be a lot of sweat, swears, tears, pain but satisfaction at the end. Also - first thing in that project - in my opinion - will be to set up "good enough" point in your mind. Remove all that rust from underbody, make sure car is safe to drive and just enjoy this gem.
had one when I lived in scotland loved it they R a great car mines was the model before yours a bit more rounded probably the best car I have ever had great engine no salt on the roads here in Oz so there's a lot of very old country cars no rust 😎
Very nice! An undervalued classic - usable too! Obviously as you already know the chassis isn't galvanized, so it's prone to rot. Once you strip out the interior you'll be able to repair what you need to. To be fair, it's in far better nick than 90% of Scimitars! Hope you find a nice dry workshop with a lift!
Yea, salt plus rusted out car will make it worse. Had a friend move from Michigan to Texas and the salty air from the gulf just destroyed his car. Ever see Blues Brothers?
I think that's a great project and will be worth restoring it but it will need lots of time and money. For a first project it's ambitious but if your family member is also handy with a spanner go for it. Even if you don't complete the project getting started on this and learning lots will have been worth the time investment.
